The scene opens in a small dressing room, a large mirror and make up area dominating the back wall whilst a large blind covers a portion of the room. The camera begins to pan slowly around the room until Roberto Verona is revealed stood by the opposite end of the blind as a undistinguishable series of expletives can be heard being made by a unseen female. Roberto shakes his head in the face of the torrent of abuse, checking his Italian designer watch on his right hand before slapping the side of the blind, shaking it.
Roberto Verona : Come on, I do not have all day. We’re nearly on.
A further series of abusive comments can be heard shouted in Roberto’s direction as he laughs under his breath, rubbing his beard with one of his hands. Thinking better of replying he leans back again the wall and his eyes scan slowly around the room as he tries to pass the time, to no avail. Suddenly Hannah emerges from behind the other end of the blind wearing a pair of ripped slim fit jeans and a black t-shirt, her hair neatly tied up in a pigtail as she stand with her hands on her hips, staring disapprovingly at Roberto.
Roberto Verona : What?
Roberto quizzed as the tension raises in the room.
Hannah : Can’t I have two minutes to myself?
Roberto Verona : That would seriously make the whole point of this redundant if I just let you wander off on your own all the time.
Hannah : This is stupid.
Roberto Verona : What happened to you’ll do anything I’d ask of you?
Hannah : I will….but…
Hannah slowly trails off, bowing her head as Roberto approaches her. Grabbing her firmly we hear a sharp click off camera as Hannah yelps.
Hannah : Ouch! What was that for!?
Roberto Verona : Just making sure you don’t try and talk your way out of it, besides we have somewhere to be.
Hannah glares at Roberto, breathing heavily in frustration before running a hand through he hair.
Hannah : You’re mad.
Roberto Verona : The word you are looking for is ingenious.
Hannah : Perhaps, but this is a little bit of overkill….
Roberto Verona : Oh dear, does the lawyer in you not enjoy being on the other end of the system?
Roberto chuckles as he raises his left arm to reveal a pair of handcuffs connecting both Roberto and Hannah who just accepts defeat.
Hannah : You know, if you wanted to get handcuffs on me there are much better ways of doing it than this.
Roberto Verona : Yes, but then I don’t pay you for that now do I. Now quit your bitching and get ready or else next time it’ll be tighter.
Hannah : Oh, kinky. Fine, let’s get this over with.
Roberto Verona : Good, that’s more like it. After you…
Roberto bows mockingly, waving his hand to allow Hannah to walk towards the door, opening it as the pair enter a long corridor, a few people shuffling past with notepads and headsets, some staring curiously at the pair handcuffed together.
Roberto Verona : Are you ready?
Hannah : As ready as I will ever be.
Suddenly, a smallwoman with a notepad approaches the pair, who turn suddenly to face her.
Woman : Mr. Verona, they’re ready for you. Remember, watch your language when we are on air. The last time we had a professional wrestler on there was a number of complaints.
Roberto Verona : I will endeavour to offend the sensitivities of your listeners as best I can.
The woman sighs and shakes her head, turning before waving her hand
Woman : Just follow me…
The trio walk down the corridor as the scene begins to fade to black.
Roberto Verona : Isn’t it fitting Todd that fate, and the minds of gormless sycophants, has dished up a rather delectable metaphor. This weekend you and I will meet in the ring for the third time and, despite the obvious hygiene issues I may face being so close to you, we will be joined at the wrist. Isn’t it funny that this match just about sums up our entire working relationship here in nCw Todd? No, I am not talking about your insatiable appetite to be as close to me as possible, but the simple fact that since you and I collided so many weeks ago I have been carrying the entire weight of your mediocrity to its most dizzying heights.
I dragged you to your most impressive victory yet when you, somehow, managed to pin me. Then I dragged you from within inches of utter failure against Rob Diamond to wrap that belt around your waist. Then I almost carried you to a victory over the nCw Tag Team Champions until you decided to waddle across the ring like a jackass and screw everything up. Now? Now I get to drag your ass from pillar to post to rip the very prize I gave you away from your petulant and unworthy grip and finally get the tiring weight of your inadequacy off of my shoulders.
Now I know how Atlas feels carrying such a massive burden for what feels like millennia, but finally this weekend I can take the huge weight off of my shoulders.
You see Todd, despite your bubbling enthusiasm the simple fact of the matter is that this Sunday, our paths will cross for the final time and you will walk out of the biggest night of your life broken. For all your talk about taking it to the Young Guns, about shutting me up and about proving to everybody that you are the better man you have somehow, amazingly, managed to not even make a dent in the armour of your foes. Try as you might you have a victory over Simon Daye, achieved by Falcon may I add, as the only feather in your cap. Ever since I beat you at Sovereign you have finally proved to the world what I have been saying all along, that you were doing nothing but riding on a wave of success that has now crashed violently against the shoreline, leaving a battered shadow of a man in its wake. All of your threats against me, the Young Guns and everybody else that has gotten your panties in a knot have come to sweet f all and now even your streak of good luck has abandoned you. This Sunday, this chapter of your career will come to a close and I hate to break it to you Todd, but not all stories have a happy ending. Let me break this down in a language you’ll understand; in this story it will be Darth Vader who strikes down the young Skywalker in his prime. Not even the enigmatic amphibian Admiral Ackbar can save you this time Williams, the charade that is your career will finally be seen for what it is; a sham.
You may ask yourself why I am so confident that I will beat you Todd and the answer is simple. I am better than you. I am a better man than you, and most importantly I am a better wrestler than you. Not only am I confident that I will be the one whose arm is raised in victory this weekend, I am also certain that after you and I meet you will never be the same man again. I don’t plan on just beating you Todd, I plan on crushing your spirit, destroying your morale and breaking your mortal coil. I haven’t trodden along this path you and I have walked for the past two months for fun Todd, just hoping that a victory would make it all go away. No. I have known all along that to truly be able to go our separate ways I am going to have to beat you to within an inch of your life because nothing else will get the message across to you that the Todd Williams they all know, and for some reason love, is as stubborn as a mule and just doesn’t know when to give up. Just look at the last time you and me last faced off at a pay per view Todd, you just couldn’t accept that you had lost and you had to go and hit me with that belt.
You started the countdown to your own demise when you decided in that split second of madness to strike me with the prize you had strived so hard to win and it is because of you that we find ourselves at this crossroads Todd. I had always intended to remove that belt from around your waist when I was good and ready, but you and you alone have accelerated the end of your reign. Tick tock, tick tock. Your time is almost up, champ.
The scene re-opens up inside a radio station booth, a series of microphones hands from the centre of a large news desk that is occupied for a scruffy man with a shaggy beard and long curly hair, a cup of coffee steaming to his left as he runs through a few messy piles of paper, reading a few last minute notes. Across the desk in front of him both Roberto and Hannah sit patiently talking amongst themselves, passing time as suddenly through a large pain of glass a series of people can be seen rushing about, the director standing and knocking on the glass and pointing as a large light fitting reading “ON AIR” which is currently unlit.
Man : Are you guys ready?
Roberto Verona : Don’t worry, this isn’t the first radio interview I have given.
Behind the glass the director begins a countdown on one hand. When he runs out of digits the man across the desk leans forward towards his microphone, taking one last sip of coffee as the ON AIR turns green.
Brent Holdsworth : Good evening sports fans, welcome back to KBBL 96.8 FM. Before the break we were talking about nCw Collision last week in the run up to this weekends A Night To Remember and I am pleased to announce that joining me right now is one of the new batch of promising young wrestlers that has joined the roster in recent months. Ladies and gentlemen please welcome Roberto Verona.
Roberto Verona : Thank you Brent.
Brent Holdsworth : Now, as I was just saying this weekend we are looking forward to the biggest night of the year in nCw and I am delighted to have you on with me as we get onto this topic Roberto. Of course, you have your own match but I wondered if you’d give us a few few words one the rest of the card before we get into the questions.
Roberto Verona : Sure, I am always willing to give you my opinion of my fellow…let’s call them colleagues.
Brent Holdsworth : Well, let’s not hang around and get stuck straight in. Other than your own match, which bouts are you looking forward to?
Roberto Verona : Frankly, for once, I must give the nCw staff some props for picking a solid card. Granted it is going to be difficult to top my first ever appearance at the biggest night of the year, but they seem to have done a good job of padding around my big moment. Everybody seems to be talking about Trent Helms and Steve Awesome’s match and of course the main event, but I think the focus is perhaps taking away from the other spectacles of the evening.
Brent Holdsworth : Which stand out for you?
Roberto Verona : Luckily for you all, I won’t be the only Young Gun in action this weekend. Both Venom and Trish will put on good showings and I am confident that despite missing out on the main card Andrew will too. You can’t look past these guys really, their matches will be engaging.
Brent Holdsworth : Anybody besides your fellow Young Guns?
Roberto Verona : Nobody outside the Young Guns matters frankly Brent, although I am sure watching Trent and Steve kill one another and Spike and Christian beat other to a pulp will provide plenty of entertainment.
Brent Holdsworth : How very diplomatic of you Roberto. Moving on from that, who do you reckon could be the new stand out star following the pay per view?
Roberto Verona : Well it won’t be Todd Williams that is for sure.
Brent Holdsworth : So you don’t consider him much of a threat?
Roberto Verona : If Todd was fighting somebody else I am sure you could say he has more of a chance, but the reality is he is in the ring with me and that isn’t going to end well for him.
Brent Holdsworth : You’re expecting to walk away the new X-Division Champion I take it then clearly? How excited will you be if you manage to pull it off and capture your first belt?
Roberto Verona : When I beat Todd I will be the X-Division champion you are correct. A belt is a belt, I am always happy to be bringing a new aura of prestige to a title and if it is the X-Division then so be it, I will work hard to make sure it is a sought after prize for the guys backstage. It will get an instant boost when it isn’t wrapped around Todd anymore that is for sure, for all his faults, namely the female organism attached to him, Rob Diamond was a much better champion and the belt needs some credibility back that it lost when he got in the middle of my plans.
Brent Holdsworth : So you don’t think Todd is a fitting holder?
Roberto Verona : Todd didn’t earn that belt and frankly, the man is a joke. He has potential but he is too far up his wife’s ass to ever realise it. I am sure he will win belts in the future but the fact is this time, he is only a champion because I decided to make him one. This Sunday he can go back to being just another guy yearning for a chance at some gold, he seems to work better when he is chasing something. Unless it is Crystal, he is abysmal at that.
Brent Holdsworth : Look, I aren’t going to bring Crystal Hilton into this. I am sure plenty will be said about her in regard to her own match so let’s move one before we get sidetracked.
Roberto Verona : Sure, I wouldn’t want to waste precious air time speaking about that paragon of ineptitude anyway.
Brent Holdsworth : Now, of course despite your challenge the match this weekend will be a leather strap match. What are you feelings on the stipulation?
Roberto Verona : Well, let me just say I am disappointed Todd ignored my challenge but I can’t blame the guys upstairs for giving the general public the chance to choose how I dissect Todd Williams. I’d have loved to beat his ass around a cell, but regardless of the stipulation I am going in there to get the job done and put Todd Williams in his place. As a matter of fact, I decided I’d get a little bit of practice before our match this weekend with the help of my good friend here.
Roberto raises his arm to reveal the hand cuffs, shaking the chain towards the microphone
Brent Holdsworth : That is a little unorthodox Roberto I must admit.
Roberto Verona : Hey, I just felt that it was a good idea to get used to dragging somebody around. OK, granted Todd is far uglier, far heavier and far more contaminated but this is as good a bit of practice as any other.
Brent Holdsworth : Well, it would be unwise of me to tell you how to prepare for a match so whatever works for you big guy!
Roberto Verona : Worst case scenario, I spend a few hours handcuffed to a woman, it is hardly a disaster.
Brent Holdsworth : I agree with you there! I really ought to try a new career if that’s how you guys train!
Roberto Verona : Well, being a wrestler has its perks Brent. Although the cost of painkillers is a bit of a kicker. That and a few of the guys don’t realise they aren’t candy.
Brent Holdsworth : We could have an entire show just about that, so let’s try and avoid that for the time being! Whilst we have you here Roberto, let me ask you what are your goals now you seem to be getting noticed in nCw?
Roberto Verona : Well, I think they are pretty easy to understand Brent but if you insist. The simple fact is I want nothing but the best for myself. Nobody will make you a legend, if you want to achieve greatness you get off your fat ass, you put the chicken wings down and you make something of yourself. My goal is to become the biggest star in nCw history and join the rank of immortals, to surpass the current glorified idols who are undeservingly worshipped by the hordes of fans who just do not know any better.
Brent Holdsworth : And what role do the Young Guns play in this?
Roberto Verona : I joined the Young Guns to align myself with likeminded people. None of us will just sit around hoping good things happen for us, we get up and we make things happen. Plenty of jackasses backstage underestimate us and mock the new line up but the fact is we are here to stay and we will ascend to a new level way above that of the previous incarnation. I would never be a part of something that will ultimately fail. My revolution can only be aided by their help. Mark my words, we are here to stay and we mean business.
Brent Holdsworth : Well, on that note I think we can leave things there Roberto. May I say thank you very much for joining me and good luck this weekend at A Night To Remember. You guys can all see him as he lines up to challenge Todd Williams in a leather strap match for the X-Division championship, the whole night will surely live up to its name! Thank you once again Roberto.
Roberto Verona : Thank you Brent. For those of you of a nervous disposition may I recommend that you do not tune in this weekend, things are going to get brutal…
The scene fades to black as Roberto removes his headset, stand up and dragging Hannah along with him as she waves to Brent who shakes his head and returns to his coffee.
Roberto Verona : When I look at you Todd I see nothing but a man who has been thrust into the limelight and hoisted up onto the shoulders of greatness without ever truly earning your spot. The fans, who let’s face it are hardly the greatest talent scouts in the world, idolise you because what they see is somebody who is goofy, who is eccentric and who is the lovable loser who has risen above adversity to make something of himself. The truth is different, it is cold and it is harsh. You are nothing but a man who hides behinds this outgoing personality to escape the crushing reality of your existence.
You are rich, you earn more money in a month than most people do in a lifetime but none of this wealth can buy you the love that you crave so deeply and search so longingly for. You are a father, but you are utterly powerless to prevent your gradual emasculation as you daughter watches on respecting you less and less each day. You are married, to a woman you worship but you are trapped inside a relationship that is so one sided it threatens to spiral out of control. You are an athlete, but your crowning glory was won not by pure natural born talent, but the distraction of your opponent. People would give anything to be like you Todd, but if they saw everything that was behind those virtues they would soon realise that they have traded away their lives for one that isn’t all it is cracked up to be.
You call yourself the solution to the revolution? It is a catchy phrase Todd and one that I am sure I will hear a thousand times from an innumerable amount of jackasses like yourself but the truth is that you cannot defeat my ideology, no matter how many of you throw yourselves in my path. I may have been beaten in the past, but I have never given up on my beliefs. I know that I have a purpose to fulfil here in the nCw and fate will reward me for my faith when I am the greatest man to have ever walked these hallowed halls. Somebody of the calibre of yourself Todd cannot make me give up on my dreams, my goals and my mission. No matter how many times you keep repeating yourself, you will not be solving anything any time soon.
My ideas will live on far longer than you are able to keep putting up a fight. There is more chance of you spontaneously combusting into a black man than there is of you being the person who puts a stop to my movement, one which will make history here in the nCw. So prattle on for as long as you like about how you are going to put me in my place, end my revolution and generally shut me up, because in the end you will just be a footnote on the annals of my rise to prominence. So either accept the reality of the situation or learn the hard way, it is really up to you.
So before you and I meet on Sunday I want you to ponder this; is it really worth persisting with this futile effort to defeat me? Your little crusade against the Young Guns is a suicide mission Todd, you have bitten off way more than you can chew and the fact of the matter is that if you don’t learn soon you will end up getting hurt. I aren’t being cute either Williams, keep up this little campaign of yours and you will live to regret it. If you somehow make it out of this Sunday without learning your lesson, you’ll be a very, very stupid boy. There is no victory when it comes to taking us on, not only am I more than capable of doing things to you that could end your career but so are Venom, Andrew and Trish.
You seriously need to learn how to pick your enemies Todd, just make sure that when you finally do it isn’t too late for you. We wouldn’t want the millions of cerebral disappointments across the world missing out on a few more years of asinine buffoonery which seems to send them into a giddy frenzy. Think of the people who love you Todd, because messing with people who have absolutely none for you whatsoever is going to be your downfall and it is a mistake you can’t just wish away.
