"Angel! Angel! Hold on, I want to ask you a few questions!"
Chad was close on my heels as I made my way to my locker room. I rounded the corner, ignoring his calls and entered the room, slamming the door in his face.
"Angel please, just a few questions? What happened out there?"
I sighed and turned around only to see Tara Fenix, her disapproving gaze told me all I needed to know.
"What was that?"
This time there is no where to go, so I walk past her, but she does not relent.
"Dammit Angel, when are you going to open up and talk to me!?"
I don't know what it was, the tone in her voice or the passion inside me...
"I love you..."
Silence... Except for Chad...
"Angel, why did you cheat to beat Brad Kane? Thats not like you? Please, just answer that question?"
She looked stunned, shocked, un sure of what to say. So I said it for her.
"I love you Tara, and you need to know that."
Is it fear of change or fear of not knowing the outcome that makes us turn away from moments such as this? Whatever it is, I left, without hearing Tara's response, if there even was one.
"I...."
Chad followed me all the way to the parking garage, never giving in.
"Come on Angel, your the World Champion, you have a huge title defense in a week, you just cheated to beat perhaps your biggest rival in the match and you have nothing to say? What, are you afraid?"
Thats enough.
"Afraid, Chad? Are you joking?"
"Give me another reason why you did what you did out there?"
"It's simple Chad. Brad Kane is not allowed to have what he wants. It's the way of the world, the way it's been his entire life. When there is something he wants it either dies or is ripped away from him by someone like me. What Brad saw out there tonight was a taste, A GLIMMER of what is to come at Reborn. He came into that match head strong and cocky, absolutely certain he was going to pin me and I proved him wrong Chad. I proved that no matter what he thinks he's capable of, I am and always will be one step ahead of him. Because unlike him, winning is my life."
Again I turn away and load my bag into the trunk of the rental.
"Maybe so, but I don't think he's going away this time Angel. He's closer to the world title than he's ever been before and what you did out there may only fuel his desire to win the belt."
"What makes you think I care?"
"I think it's very important you care about what motivates and drives your opponents."
"I know what drives them Chad. Brad Kane is addicted to failure. Adam Knite is addicted to Kelly. Steve Awesome is addicted to the spot light."
Clear cut and simple.
"But I'll explain because your small mind probably cannot comprehend what I just said."
Which goes without saying.
"Brad Kane sets himself up for failure. He comes out here, week after week, telling his story, spilling his guts, showing us what really makes him tick and right when we think we have this guy nailed down, he gets bored, tries to reinvent himself and ends up right back where he started. Lets face facts Chad, Brad is about as consistent as Joe Everyman's ever allusive "heart."
What was it, a month, two months ago when Brad Kane's whole life was dedicated to destroying nCw and urinating on the X-Division? And now he's hell bent on the World Title because his daughter died? Whats next, Megan is going to become impregnated with one of Trent Helms' alien children and Brad will have to go on a galaxy hopping journey to find the purple haired phenom so he can battle him to the death? And when he gets tired of that, Megan will mysteriously lose the baby, Brad will cry about it for two weeks and decide to use that as his motivation to prove that he can still go at the same level as say.... Me?"
Laughable.
"Come on Chad, if that isn't setting yourself up for failure, I don't know what is. The simple fact is this. Brad Kane cannot have what Brad Kane wants. Whether it be the World Title, his baby girl or a normal family. Brad Kane will always find his dreams tattered, his desire crushed and his heart broken. This Sunday is just another chapter in the never ending saga of Brad Kane's miserable life.
So Brad, take one last look at the nCw World Title on my shoulder, thats the closest your ever going to get to it. I proved it tonight, I proved it last week and I'll prove it again next week, you will never beat me again. Game's over Brad, time to drop the dead baby act and get a new life, try to pick one thats actually interesting this time."
"Wow, thats possibly one of the cruelest things I've ever heard you say."
"I'm done playing children's games Chad. The things my fellow co-workers deem as entertaining is about as fun to watch as an Ace promo. Have you watched one of those recently? They make your eyes bleed. I look around nCw and I see middle aged morons calling themselves young guns, I see legends changing gimmicks because their tired of sucking, I see the face of the franchise making a mockery of his legacy... I see a company once again on the verge of becoming the laughing stock of the wrestling world, and frankly, I'm worried that I'm the only one sane enough to go out there and do what we are paid to do. Wrestle to be the best in the World. And yet I'm the bad guy for wanting to be the best, for wanting to wrestle, for wanting to do whats best for this company? Well you can all kiss my ass. But I'm getting ahead of myself. I said I knew what drives my opponents and I believe I was on Adam Knite."
Possibly the only man in the match I deem to be on my level.
"Adam is a very dangerous man in this match because his sights are not set on the World Title, but his bride, Kelly Knite, who through a rather convoluted plan executed by Leonard Fox, has wound up at the side of Steve Awesome. Adam is not looking strictly for a victory, he is not strictly looking to gain the World Title, he is looking to end the career and maybe even the life of Steve Awesome. Which is why I think we can help each other.
You see, we both want the same thing. We both do not want Steve Awesome to win. So if Adam agrees to keep Awesome the hell away from my World Title, I'll promise to play nice when it inevitably comes down to him and me in that ring. Lets be honest, we are the two best wrestlers in the company, possibly the world, thats why we were both a part of the only successful version of the Age of the Revolution. Adam Knite and Angel are the true faces of nCw and this match has been a long time in the making. I want to give the fans the match they deserve Adam. They deserve to see you and I go at it without anything getting in the way. They deserve an epic match up that will leave their jaws dropped to the floor. I'm willing to give it to them Adam, if your willing to remove Steve Awesome from existence. Deal?"
I'm dead serious about that offer.
"I don't understand. Adam Knite is in a match for your World Title and your offering to what? Face him fair and square once Brad Kane and Steve Awesome are out of the way?"
"I'm offering to not make this match anymore of a soap opera than it already is. Adam and I have enough history to fuel a rage filled feud without adding tired threats and boring overtures about death and destruction. It's as simple as that Chad. He takes out Steve, I take out Brad, then we give the world what they've been waiting for. As for Kelly, she loves you, you love her, everything else is just filler Adam. We get it. Try not to bludgeon us to death with it yet again."
Just one name left.
"And I come to Steve Awesome, a man who is driven by nothing more than the spot light. He sees an opportunity to put his name before everyone else's, and he takes it. Generally I could let it slide, anywhere you go your going to find some show off who constantly needs the world looking at him, but this time its different. You see Steven, when you were World Champion, the spot light was on you, all eyes watching, but ever since I dug my claws into this fifteen pounds of gold, you've been doing everything in your power to suck the spot light off of me and back to you. Honestly Steven, I'm a little tired of it.
This belt means I am the best damn wrestler in the entire world right now, it makes me and me alone the only Face of the Franchise. You had your fifteen minutes Steven, you had the world in the palm of your hands, and like usual, you got excited, lost control, and found yourself empty handed and feeling a little dirty."
Ahhh, gotta love those premature ejaculation jokes.
"The thing is Steve, it's my time now. I'm the World Champion. I'm the Face. I'm the Savior. I am God. We know this. We accept this. We cherish this. But you? You couldn't leave well enough alone. You poked, prodded, and wormed your way onto center stage. You did the next best thing to actually earning YET ANOTHER World title shot and picked a fight with the bosses son in law, hit on his daughter and ruined their marriage.
I understand, I know what it's like to want to be where I am. I know what it's like to feel robbed and betrayed, to feel like your time has come and gone too quickly. But Steve, lets be honest, you had your shot, you had your run, and you have failed at every single chance you've had to recapture it. Your single claim to fame, your only world title run is a joke in itself. You cheated to win the belt in the first place. And you have spent the last two years doing everything in your power to keep your name in the mix and prove the first time wasn't a fluke. From turning face, to defending nCw, to even taking on the monster Harold. You've put yourself in every big situation you can find all with the same goal.
The World Title.
Your a joke Steve. A pure. Utter. And total.
Joke.
You were never good enough to win the World Title in the first place. You know it. We know it. Now get over it. Thats why you'll never win it again. Thats why you couldn't beat Falcon. Thats why you will always be the annoying brat in the back of the class screaming for attention. Your just not good enough to actually earn anything.
Not Kelly's heart and definitely not My World Championship."
Its sad but true and he'll have to come to realize it one day, perhaps when he's on death's door step and it dawns on him his life has been wasted with searching for the easy road, as opposed to just doing it the hard way. Whatever. Let him flounder in his self made hell. I have more important things to worry about. Chad backs off, the interview is over but before I can get in the car my phone rings. It's Nero.
"Nero?"
"She's gone Angel..."
What?
"Who's gone?"
He can't mean...
"Hayleigh, she's gone..."
No...
"Who?"
I know who.
"Shelly."
*click*
"I'm going to kill her."
The End.
