I’ve never quite liked hospitals. I’ve stayed in a few over my career and I’m always in a rush to get out. I don’t know what it is about them, but when I’m in one all I can think about is death.
The scene opens up late at night in a lonely waiting room in a hospital in Atlanta. A man who looks a lot like Venom if he was about five years older and had a full beard sits in a chair with no one around him. His head is facing down and his mood comes off as somber. He looks up and a small smile forms on his face and he stands up and embraces his brother as he approaches.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t be here sooner.”
“No, it’s fine. I didn’t expect you to come, but I’m glad you’re here.”
“Is she…alright?”
“She’s in a lot of pain right now, but she’s a fighter. Truthfully, she’s probably in better shape then I am. She’s on morphine and she’s a little woozy from it but she’s not letting it get her down.”
“Do they know what’s wrong with her yet?”
“They’re waiting on blood work but her CT scan was clean. It really seems like they don’t have a clue.”
“Man, ****ing doctors.”
“I know, but they’re working on it.”
“They better or I’ll have her moved. You know Charlie can get her the best doctors in the world right?”
“I know, she’ll be fine. Why don’t you head in and see her? She’ll be happy to see her favorite brother-in-law.”
“I’m her only brother-in-law.”
Venom’s brother grins as Venom walks and enters the hospital room. The room is dark except for the light from her monitors. She looks up at him as he enters the room and gives him a weak smile.
“Shouldn’t you be on my TV.”
“Naw, I’ll be on your internet this week.”
He moves next to her bed and sits beside her. Tears build up in the corners of his eyes but he holds them back. She looks like someone has drug her through hell and she’s asked for more. Her face is pale white and there are rings around her eyes. She stares at him like she’s staring off into space.
“Forget about it, you’re my little brother superstar, the hero of all the little kids.”
“I wouldn’t say all that Tina.”
He reaches out and holds her hand with both of his as Venom’s brother stands in the doorway looking on and we fade.
We open up outside. It is a chilly summer night in Atlanta as Venom sits on the front steps of the hospital and stares up into the sky. He shakes his head and wipes his eyes with the back of his hand.
“She’s gonna be ok. The doctors think there’s something wrong with her gallbladder and they’re waiting on one last test and she’ll have to have surgery to remove it. We apparently don’t even need one.”
Venom shrugs.
“But you didn’t follow me all the way down here so I could talk about what is ailing me or my brother’s wife. No, you guys followed me all the way down here so I could get one last retort in on Black Jesus’ comments. I didn’t have a whole lot of time to listen to his recent spiel on me, but I made time to skim it and my biggest surprise about the whole thing was that he finally decided to say something.”
“Don’t get me wrong, he already cut a promo, but Xavier Williams finally spoke more then two sentences and defended himself…and Jack Hammond…and The Ace…”
Venom nods his head and lets out a deep sigh.
“I think you’re missing the point Williams. I’m not shooting down your World Title run or Hammond and Ace’s because I think you all suck. No, I’m trying to show you, and the world out there, that the only reason you ever won that title and have it to hang your hat on is because there was no real competition. Obviously the three of you have talent otherwise you’d be working at Burger King instead of in a wrestling ring. Right now we have men like Angel, Alex Jones, Brad Kane, Steve Awesome, Adam Knite, and hell, even Zelda Knite fighting in main events and the three of you who were World Champions two years ago don’t even belong in the same time zone as them let alone the same ring. Your so called legacy is tarnished not only by the fact that you showed no honor in winning that belt by cheating but by the fact that there was no one else there to take the reigns and hold that title.”
“Sure, Adam and Awesome were around, but I understand they were busy fighting a ‘revolution’ while you reaped all the benefits of them being busy by running around with a World title you didn’t even earn. It may not matter to you Williams, but it matters to me.”
Venom points at his chest.
“It matters to me because it shows that your only big accomplishment here in NCW is tarnished by a complete lack of Honor even though you claim this belt was made for you. You stand there and claim that you have lived your whole career by a code of honor and all I hear coming out of your mouth is lies. You don’t even deserve to be anywhere near my belt, let alone be in a match fighting for it.”
“That wasn’t up to me to decide though, that was the brass’ decision. They put you in this match because they couldn’t lead up into a big Pay Per View like Picture Perfect without a big time former World Champion setting the stage. Hammond and Ace are gone and everyone else whose still here that held that title has more important things going on, so you get a title shot by default. Again, where is the honor in that? Who knows, but I do know one thing, Sunday when the whole world is watching us on the world wide web and you’re exposed for the dishonorable cheat you really are, you’ll have to explain to the fans that love you and hate me why the good guys are really the bad guys.”
“I may not be a fan favorite or the good guys, but you’re going to find out the hard way that my honor runs deep and you’re going to end up as just another casualty.”
Fade.
