I'm not joking when I say this...... it was seriously one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
it was a bunch of mindless dribble, mixed in with some throat slashing. Plus, you could see every twist coming from a mile away.

The Play was alot better, then again I was getting a hummer while watching the Play, so my judgment may be flawed.

Adam, I disagree, I loved the movie. Sure I saw the twists coming from a mile away, but I liked the actors and the roles that they played. Personally I loved it because it was so different than everything else thats been coming out.

your kidding me right? this was from hell but with singing lol, tim burton is not the "god" everyone make's him out to be, he's had maybe two good solid movies maybe 3, Ed Wood, and the first two batman's, other then that pffff, mind you I LOVE his wife she's an awesome actress (helena) and depp IS one of the best actors of our generation however, this movie...sucked. the plot was pridictable the singing was meh the scrips was even meher not even the best actors in the world (and they had a few of em in this movie) could save it sorry.
thats just my 2 cents of course keep the change.

Warning: There might be spoilers.
The movie should have been great, it should have been something fresh and different, instead it was a pile of rubbish that tried too hard to be different and didn't try hard enough to be good.
The songs were horrid, there was nothing memorable to them, I watched the movie less than 24 hours ago and I can't sing one song back to you at all. If you are going to be a musical you must have memorable music. The only song a vaguely remember was the song where he's singing about his razor blade for like 10 minutes, and that's only because half way through I screamed "how long can you sing about a knife being your friend?!"
The actors were superb and the setting and colors were great, I can't deny the movie that. Burton set up a dark world and it accomplished the feel he was going for.
The characters were bland, and the script was predictable. If this wasn't a Tim Burton musical and didn't have Depp in it, I guarantee it wouldn't be getting so much praise for being "different".
With a slightly altered plot and if it wasn't a musical I bet the movie would have been very solid, but it wasn't. I can hardly put into words how bad I thought this movie was, let me say it like this.
I've never had the urge to turn off a movie in the first 15-30 minutes, once I start watching I tough the movie out no matter how bad it seems, this movie, it took everything I had not to just hit the eject button and forget it ever existed.

One First Off....It's based on a play that has been out for nearly two decades, anyone could know what was going to happen going into the Movie.
Also...JFK...You're right Burton isn't the god everyone makes him out to be, but how dare you not mention A Nightmare Before Christmas as one of his better works.
Sadly Corpse Bride couldn't follow suite.
Honestly, I refuse to give any kind of rating on the movie, since I've seen the Broadway Play, The movie was alright, but if you saw the play, then you really didn't expect too many different things from the movie.

Corpse Bride wasn't bad, but compared to A Nightmare Before Christmas... you can see the faults. I knew of the play, but I had never seen it, and I LOVED the movie.
I'd rank this a little under Ed Wood, TBH, but far from horrible.

I actually really enjoyed it.
Yes I saw the twists, but I'm the kind of freak who looks for them anyway (like in The Departed) The singing was good because it was differet, there were off notes and off harmonies (they have a specific name but I've forgotten) whoich added to the weirdness or Burtonesque-ness of the film. (I never made that up, trust me)
However slating Burton is ridiculous...allow me...
Ed Wood. Batman Batman Forever BEETLEJUICE A Nightmare Before Christmas (Yes it angered me that this has become n Emo fashion trend, but I've liked this film since it came out I still have the VHS upstairs and watch it every christmas eve) Sleepy Hollow Planet of the Apes Big Fish Vincent Edward Scissor Hands.
To me...thats the work of a great man. The movie was good but not the best, and besides it had Alan Rickman in it and Sacha Boren Cohen...otherwise known as Borat.
"To shav-ah da face. To cut-ah da hair!"
Quote of the movie? In a truly Brummie accent *i.e. where I'm from, Birmingham, England) "You can call me Dave actually..."

I think that the biggest problem with this movie for people is that they go in expecting to hate it. People look at it and go "oh Tim Burton" or "oh a musical" and dread watching it. If thats how you start than of course you are going to hate it. As far as predictability, yeah, I called that she was the mom from the start too, that didnt make me enjoy the movie any less though. All of the actors and actresses did a fantastic job all around, great casting and a great movie. I will have it be known that i too do not really care for Burton all that much, but I think that he did a bang up job on this movie. The sequence at the end was fantastic, whether you called it or not. I have absolutely no idea how anyone can say that the characters were bland, if anything they were over the top in my books, the farthest from bland that they could possibly be. anyways, nothing is going to change my mind, nor yours, in my books this was a fantastic all round movie and I do think that depp deserved best actor at the academy awards, but the academy has their love affair with Day-Lewis

not right now hunny I have a head ache
i just dont think burtons movies in general are all that good, I highly enjoyed Ed Wood but then again that was dun dun dun Depp, I also liked the first two batman movies, the first one more so then the 2nd however, Pee-wee's Big Adventure was a classic as a child so I'll give him that, Sleepy Hollow was only watchable because of Ricci's tata's mmmm the things Id do to her, everything else, meh and I just read he's doing alice in wounderland, ok interesting.

I may reiterate some points, but do it in a different way.
Yes, the movie was based on a play about two decades old..and for the most part is a British play, at least I believe it to be. Take in account the differences between American and British sense of humor, or culture. Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street was originally a story, that grew popular and became a broadway play.
The movie could be better, but you have to think that most people did know what was going to happen just when it was being previewed. Today is not the age of surprise...so anyone going to see a movie that they really want to should at the very least know the plot line.
Hell I had a friend who watched Saw for the first time and said ''The guy laying on the floor is the killer'' So yeah, he hated it. I enjoyed it, I enjoyed Sweeney Todd and the music is very memorable. My Friends was a lot more then him saying his straight razors are his friends. He was saying they are the only thing he has anymore, the only reason he exists is to get revenge with the tools of his trade.
Other songs such as Epiphany, Pretty Women, and Worst Pies in London I remember well, and listen to once in awhile. I haven't seen the movie since December.
So yeah, Sweeney Todd equals awesome. Sorry Adam, but I have to disagree with you.
