The light shines off the gold plate of the NCW X-Division title, then slowly a reflection comes into focus, it’s the face of the NCW X-Division champion AJ Phoenix. He sighs as the angle switches, we see him sitting on the edge of a bed inside a hotel room looking disappointed. His hair wet from having just emerged from a shower, he looks up through the wet curtain over his face, he lowers the belt down next to him and thinks hard trying to choose his words carefully.
“Disappointment is usually a word that is not associated with myself or my career...”
AJ pauses, he gets to his feet and walks towards the camera, a tight black shirt grips his athletic frame as a pair of baggy light blue designer jeans cover his lower half.
“But on Collision I had one of the biggest disappointments of my life, I lost to Jack Hammond and Nelly Angel. I lost to two men who have less than half my talent, I lost to them in a match where my tag team partner is the world champion. But, see therein lies the problem, we were expected to win so this is seen as a major upset, which it was, but see in the end Steve and I have been going through a rollercoaster ride of problems, he had no idea if Ace was going to get to the Road to the gold final, he witnessed JFK’s return and subsequent backstabbing of Kole Kaos and of the corporate empire, needless to say Steve and I had alot on our minds....”
AJ pauses again and smirks, his arrogance again shining through like the beacon from a lighthouse on a clear summers night.
“Steve and I beat ourselves boys, so don’t go celebrating your little victory just yet. Nelly, you were lucky not to get destroyed, and Jack Hammond, well, he isn’t so lucky, cause this Sunday at Road to the gold he has to get in the ring with me for the X-Division title, now I know what you’re thinking, that seems pretty lucky right?, a championship title match, a chance for Mr Hammond to realise his dream of becoming a champion and a somebody in NCW, well, it would be a tremendous stroke of luck if it wasn’t against me...”
“Hammond is probably going to sit back and have a huge grin on his face while he thinks about his two “wins” over me. But Jack, here’s a newsflash for you, this is a match for my title, and a title match is something completely different, you have to be in the right mindset, you can’t get through it with blind luck, but that is all you have Jack, blind-luck. And against me, if you’re going to take my title you need a hell of alot more than that, you need to be on top of your game, you need to be a future legend, you need to basically be, everything you’re not....”
“Don’t take it as a complete insult Jack, people like you are a necessity in this business, not everyone can be like me. We need guys like you to try your hearts out and give the fans hope. See they see themselves in you, you’re an everyman character, and I don’t mean like that moron Joe who takes the term a little too literally, I mean in the classic sense, physically, you’re almost always outmatched. I’m six foot tall, in amazing shape, I can do anything I put my mind to, sure you can do many amazing things, but I’m the best pure athlete this company has ever and will ever see, you, you have the talent to do something and be someone, but you don’t have the focus, the drive, you should put the gas down but instead you lay off and use the brake Jack....”
AJ shakes his head and smiles
“Let me put it in terms you’ll understand, you’re one of those flashy Japanese imports, fast, good to look at but in the end flawed because they lack the muscle of an American made Detroit street machine, which is what I am, basically, you’re a plastic toy car like an ’07 Honda civic, meanwhile I’m a classic muscle car with power to burn like a ‘68 Chevy camero, you may LOOK the part, but when it gets down to it you just can’t measure up Hammond.....”
“Oh I’m sorry, is this offending you?. Last week you seemed to get a little more than “miffed” about how I talked about you, even going as far as to say I “wasn’t very nice” to you.....well DUUUUHHHHHHHHH”
AJ sighs and rolls his eyes
“This business isn’t “nice”, you may think this place is all about fun and games and your “quirky” sense of humour, we get it Hammond, you’re a clown, a jester, you’re Jim Carrey before the truman show, but against me, for the title you’ll need to be an unstoppable force, the picture of focus, not someone who drives around in his car with Nelly Angel arguing about a digital clock in your car or whether it’s better to be stuck in a telephone booth with a lion or a monkey, these may be things you contemplate but right now all you need to think about is this Sunday.......”
AJ picks up the X-Division title
“You need to believe you can take this title from me....”
AJ smirks and cracks his neck
“Not think, not want, you need to KNOW you can beat me, anything less and you’ll fail miserably......”
AJ lays the title down on a nearby table, he crosses his arms over his chest and stares right through the camera as if he was face to face with Jack Hammond
“I want you to believe you can beat me Jack, if not it won’t be any fun, I want you to come at me with everything you have, I want you to show me a Jack Hammond I have never EVER seen before, cause if the same ol “hamster” turns up on Sunday, he’ll fail, and he’ll fail on a night where he could have become the X-Division champion....”
“I know the truth hurts, but in big matches when it’s all on the line is when I shine, that’s my territory, we can yammer back and forth about useless facts, like you beating me twice, me winning a title before you, but, in the end, you have to beat me on Sunday to become champion, I don’t have to beat you...you have to beat me....and trust me when I say that will be harder said than done....”
AJ smirks and picks up the X-Division title throwing it over his shoulder, he looks in the mirror and admires how it looks as the scene fades
