“As soon as you’re born, they make you feel small. By giving you no time instead of it all. Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all. A working class hero is something to be. A working class hero is something to be.”
To start the scene we hear the voice of the legendary John Lennon and an acoustic guitar, AJ sits silently, his mind clicks over in deep thought, then the screen goes white for a split second, we see AJ when he first arrived in NCW, his first matches against Jack Hammond and Joe Everyman, a smile comes across his face.
“They hurt you at home and they hit you at school. They hate you if you’re clever and they despise a fool. Till you’re so ****in crazy you can’t follow their rules. A working class hero is something to be. A working class hero is something to be.”
AJ’s smile widens as he remembers his victories over Ortega, Xavier Cross and Xavier Williams, it intertwines with AJ in the middle of the fans celebrating and embracing them. Taking pictures after live events, celebrating with them after winning more matches and hitting high risk moves the crowd seem to enjoy, we snap back to reality as AJ sighs deeply.
“Well they’ve tortured and scared you for twenty odd years, then they expect you to pick a career, when you can’t really function you’re so full of fear. A working class hero is something to be. A working class hero is something to be. Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV, and you think you’re so clever and classless and free, but you’re still ****ing peasants as far as I can see, A working class hero is something to be. A working class hero is something to be.”
The smile fades as flashbacks of the past attacks by the revolution pop through his mind, Adam Knite destroying Trent Helms, remembering his friend Spike Kane’s body laying in a pool of blood, AJ anger grows, he remembers the claims made by the revolution, them trying to make the fans think they’re fighting for a noble cause, AJ’s anger rises more and more.
“There’s room at the top they’re telling you still, but first you must learn how to smile as you kill. If you want to be like the folks on the hill. A working class hero is something to be. A working class hero is something to be. If you want to be a hero well just follow me, If you want to be a hero well just follow me......”
AJ gets to his feet unable to contain it anymore, he closes his eyes and breathes deeply, but all he sees the selfish chaos that the revolution have brought upon the NCW. He paces back and forth and stops in his tracks, he looks straight ahead and sighs, the camera pans around to find that AJ is looking into a mirror.
“Is that the face of a leader?. Do I really have what it takes to do this?. I ask myself these questions and wonder, if I was the leader everyone wanted me to be would I have to ask?. Would I have doubts?. I think about everything that started this war, Lance Ryan returning with his own crusade to make the NCW great again, but the truth is NCW was always great. And it was elfish of Lance to start this and leave, he left it all in the hands of Adam Knite, a man whose own selfish aspirations had been seen many times before. When Lance left and Adam took over the vision went from being that of improvement to that of one man’s greed.”
“We can see it now, Kelly Fox, Adam’s lover trying to push Angel into securing the win for Adam. Like Angel will make a difference. Sure he’s a great competitor but he’s become a lesser man since hooking up with the revolution, a fact even the man himself acknowledges. The main problem I have with it is we’ve seen this repentant Angel before, and the truth is I don’t believe a word of it. He may act like he has a problem morally with what Adam Knite does, but the truth is he’s just angry it’s Adam being pushed as the hero of the revolution and not him!.”
AJ pauses and sighs again, he studies his face in the mirror.
“And poor Philip Burns, he’s the middle man in all this. Does he support the “leader” of the revolution or does he go at it for himself like Angel?. I can see the revolution coming apart at the seams, does it really surprise anyone?. I thought it would happen sooner. See while the revolution members are out for themselves the resistance know that it’s important to be a solid team. If JFK or MGK win the match at Sovereign I’ll congratulate them and wish them luck....”
“But still those questions remain. Do I have what it takes to be a leader or to win this match?, mentally I can say yes, but can I do what needs to be done?. Can I be ruthless enough to end the dreams of Philip Burns and Angel?. I guess only time will tell. I’ve been there before, to that dark place, that place where you become selfish, that place where you look out for you and only you. To be a true leader you have to be selfless, you have to look out for the group, but what if the best thing for the group is for me to be selfish?, what if the best thing for the group is for me to go into this as a cocky arrogant jerk who only looks out for himself. Sometimes....the best way to beat evil, is with another kind of evil.....”
AJ smirks in the mirror and turns away walking back toward “us”. He slides his hands into the pockets of his jeans and lets a small laugh escape his lips.
“But can I be like that?, can I sacrifice all that I’ve done to make myself into a leader that stands for honor?. I suppose I may have to, but then again, maybe I don’t, I don’t know. It’s so confusing. The line between good and evil is blurred, the only thing for sure is that Kelly and Adam must be stopped from re-making NCW in their own vision where Adam is the undisputed world champion and will be protected. If one of us wins this match, James, Mike or myself, we can stop it, we can get that shot Adam craves so much, but how do we go about it?, I know the Karn brothers and in the past they’ve both done things considered underhanded, in fact the three of us can be worse, we have that ability to let that dark side take over....”
AJ clenches his fist, he shakes his head and looks away before looking back at the mirror, after a moment he picks up something from the table and launches it at the mirror cracking it, AJ walks up to it and we see his face has been split in two by a crack in the mirror. He reaches out and lets his fingers slide down the crack.
“In the end everyone has two sides, but the question is, which one will be strong enough to do what needs to be done?. So many questions without answers, but I guess I’ll find those answers this Sunday in the coliseum, where gladiators are born....”
