The Return of a Hero
Part 5 of 10: “Why can’t we be friends?”
“It’s me.”
“It’s…it’s you.”
“Hi.”
“Jaymie Boone.”
“Hi.”
…
Luke: “Hi.”
Jaymie: “It’s been a while.”
Luke: “Yeah.”
Jaymie: “Three weeks, I think?”
Luke: “18 days…to be exact.”
Jaymie: “How are you?”
Luke: “Right now?”
Jaymie: “Sure.”
…
Luke: “Not so good. I’m not doing good right now.”
Jaymie: “That stinks.”
Luke: “Well it’s obviously your fault.”
Jaymie: “Well, duh.”
Luke: “Well…yeah.”
Jaymie: “How’s life? Doing anything special with it?”
Luke: “I’m working.”
Jaymie: “Oh fun. Now quite as good as your other job, huh?”
Luke: “I hate it.”
Jaymie: “Uh-huh. How’s your love life? Still breaking hearts?”
Luke: “What? No! Stop. It’s been-it’s been different. You have no idea.”
Jaymie: “Probably not. Do you have a girlfriend? Should I be jealous?”
Luke: “Yes…I mean…kinda. She’s kind of…yeah, she’s my girlfriend. Yeah.”
Jaymie: “…”
Luke: “What?”
Jaymie: “What’s her name?”
Luke: “Why does it matter?”
Jaymie: “Pleeeeease tell me!”
Luke: “It’s…it’s Leslie. Leslie Sayonara.”
Jaymie: “Oh.”
Luke: “Oh? What, you know her or something?”
Jaymie: “Uh…no.”
Luke: “It sounded like you know her.”
Jaymie: “I doubt that very much.”
Luke: “Well…she’s my girlfriend. Kinda.”
Jaymie: “Kinda?”
Luke: “I don’t really want to be her boyfriend. Kinda happened by accident.”
Jaymie: “…”
Luke: “What?”
Jaymie: “I’m jealous.”
Luke: “You’re jealous?”
Jaymie: “I’m allowed.”
Luke: “You left me! You left me and beat me up in front of everybody! Your new boyfriend laughed at me!”
Jaymie: “He’s a mute. He can’t laugh.”
Luke: “You sure? I’m pretty sure mute people can laugh.”
Jaymie: “I’ve never heard him laugh, so I assume he can’t.”
Luke: “Maybe he just doesn’t find you funny.”
Jaymie: “Heh.”
Luke: “So what is this? Why are you calling, Jaymie?”
Jaymie: “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Luke: “I think it’s pretty self explanatory; why are you calling?”
Jaymie: “What, do you think I have ulterior motives or something? Why can’t we be friends?”
Luke: “Because you humiliated me and broke my heart!”
Jaymie: “Come on Luke, it wasn’t that bad, was it?”
Luke: “Is this a serious question?”
Jaymie: “Listen…I’m calling because I still care Luke. It’s hard to stop caring when you take a boy’s…flower away.”
Luke: “…I hate you.”
Jaymie: “You don’t mean that.”
Luke: “I really think I do.”
Jaymie: “You’re just mad. Let things cool off a bit and call me, alright? I’d love to see you again…”
Luke: “Do you want to ruin my life or something?”
Jaymie: “I thought you said I did already?”
Luke: “…”
Jaymie: “I’m not that evil Luke. I’m just a typical girl, wanting anything she can get. Leslie…Leslie, right? She’ll learn and you’ll be feeling the same way, wanting another high school girl.”
Luke: “How do you know she’s in high school?”
Jaymie: “I have my ways. Do you think I just started stalking you? You think that we met by coincidence?"
Luke: “No…you’re not telling me…”
Jaymie: “Girl you ‘love’ breaks your heart and that night you find me? Yeah, not even Cinemax is that good Luke. I left clues; did you even check if that e-mail address was hers before you fell into your drunken somber?”
Luke: “Why…why are you telling me this now?”
Jaymie: “Because I’m a bitch. Just thought you should know.”
Luke: “Why me? Why did you guys pick me?”
Jaymie: “We needed to set an example, why not take the common man and show him how dangerous we can be? You looked so cute trying to be tough, and hey…at times I thought of telling you. You looked so cute sleeping next to me, telling me that you loved me. But I work for Sephiroth.”
Luke: “Did you ever love me?”
Jaymie: “No.”
Luke: “When we had sex…when we kissed…none of it was real?”
Jaymie: “Nope.”
Luke: “…”
Jaymie: “It’s been nice chatting with you.”
Luke: “Uh-huh.”
Jaymie: “I’m glad we had this little talk.”
Luke: “Sure.”
She hangs up the phone, leaving me in a worst state then I was before.
This life…the life I threw myself into isn’t worth it anymore. I can’t wake up every morning feeling like this, learning new things about my life…about everything.
I quit the wrestling business because things got too complicated, because I couldn’t take the pressure of being a wrestler…and because everybody left me. I was alone, by myself. Coming home I thought I would find friends, make a new life.
But my old life keeps haunting me, they keep interfering with my life and reminding me that I can’t get away no matter how hard I try.
Is it worth it? Are the lies, the secrets, and the massive amount of mental anguish even worth it in this life? I don’t think so…
I’m only eighteen years old, why does my life have to be this complicated? I’m supposed to be worried about school or what girls think about me, not about a father I never met and a evil ex girlfriend messing with me. I shouldn’t be stuck with a high school girl that doesn’t know the difference between a pen and a pencil.
What life did I choose? Did I choose the right one…
…I don’t know. I just know I can never go back to the wrestling world. They would murder me. If I thought the beatdown they gave me before was bad…
I can’t imagine what they’d do to me now.
This is my life now and it sucks.
