Technically Denver is on top of the AFC west because they hold the tiebreaker over SD

Looks can be deceiving, but I think we can all agree here that Baltimore could run away with the AFC North. At 5-1, they're off to their best start since their Super Bowl run in 2000. And who knows? They very well could lock up the No. 1 seed when the playoffs come around.
Was Tennessee's upset win over Pittsburgh surprising? Yes. Are the Houston Texans are who we thought they were after Sunday's loss to Green Bay? Yes. Still, when it comes to this week's matches, Houston might lose their second game of the season when they host Baltimore; Tennessee has the good fortune of playing Buffalo.
As for the NFC, Chicago is off to their best start since their 2006 Super Bowl run. Of course, that year they were unbeaten for the first seven games of the season. Nonetheless, Da Bears are looking like a contender - right now. I just hope they don't screw this up down the road. Coming up, a divisional matchup against the visiting Detroit Lions on Monday Night.
Keeping things in the NFC North, Minnesota was brought back to earth with Sunday's loss to Washington, but then when you score three field goals, instead of going for touchdowns to start the game, well, you were just asking for trouble. Plus, they allowed the Redskins to score 17 unanswered points in the 2nd quarter alone. Hopefully Minny rebounds this week when they host the visiting Arizona Cardinals.
Atlanta avoided yet another close game against Oakland Sunday as Matt Ryan was picked off three times in that game. Could the Falcons be slipping? When Atlanta return from their bye, Mike Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles will be waiting to try and unseat the NFL's lone unbeaten team.
I have to say, the NFC West is the best thing going right now, and that may be an understatement. With Seattle's upset win over New England, they are now tied for first with Arizona and San Francisco, who both lost Sunday. Arizona's loss to Buffalo I can understand, but San Fran's, not so much. The Niners were pretty much beaten soundly by New York, and it was bad, ugly even. With Thursday's pivotal game between the Niners and Seahawks, it should be interesting to see if Seattle can pull off a third upset this season, and if San Francisco can pull it together. We already have disappointments in the AFC (New England, Pittsburgh) The NFC already has Green Bay. San Francisco doesn't want to share that same fate.

Some interesting notes on today's games in Week 7... (I'll get to the 4:00 games a little later.)
*Tennessee has won the last four matchups with Buffalo and are 27-16 all time. As expected, this should be an entertaining and high scoring game, and the Bills need this win if they want to contend for a wild card spot.
*After a heartbreaking loss last week to Baltimore, Dallas should feel a lot better this week against Carolina, a team Tony Romo is undefeated against at 4-0. Dallas has won the past four matchups with Carolina and are 8-3 all-time vs the Panthers, but are 0-2 against Carolina in the playoffs. This will be the first-ever meeting between their head coaches, though. The last time Carolina beat Dallas in the regular season, Bill Clinton was in the middle of his first term as president in 1997. (Carolina Panthers: 23 - Dallas Cowboys: 13). Carolina's first ever playoff game was a win against the Cowboys in the 1996 NFC Divisional playoffs, winning 26-17.
* In a re-match of their lone playoff meeting in the AFC Divisional playoffs, which was a very close contest, the Ravens and Texans meet again in the regular season. After being the next to last team to fall from the unbeaten, having to play the Ravens doesn't make last week's loss to Green Bay any better. Baltimore are one of five teams Houston has never beaten as they are 0-5 against them all time, 0-1 in the playoffs (the other teams being Minnesota at 0-2; Philly at 0-3; San Diego at 0-4, and the New York Jets at 0-5. Well, 1-5 now after their 24-17 win earlier this season)
*When Cleveland visits Indianapolis, it will be the first-ever meeting between the respective quarterbacks and head coaches for both clubs, though Pat Shumur is 1-0 against them all-time. The Browns dominated the early days of their rivalry against the Colts franchise, especially when they won their first seven matches against them, most by a large margin. Of course, by the time Peyton took over, that changed pretty quick. The Colts won five matches in a row, from 1999-2008, before the Browns ended their winning streak last season. They lead the overall series 16-14.
*The same scenario plays out in Minnesota when the Vikings welcome the visiting Arizona Cardinals in the first-ever meeting between John Skelton and Christian Ponder, this should be an interesting game, to say the least. Arizona is 10-14 all-time vs Minnesota, including 0-2 in the playoffs; Also, they have never beaten Minnesota on the road. (0-7) They've lost the past two matchups in this series, losing 27-24 on 11/7/2010, and most recently 34-10 last year.
*Giants-Redskins, need I say more? OK, I will. The rivalry between the New York Giants and Washington Redskins dates all the way back to 1932. Historically, the Giants have had their way with their NFC East rival (New York Giants leads 94-64-2), but there was a time when they battled for division supremacy in the 80's, especially when the division title was on the line. These club share 7 NFC East titles and five Super Bowls victories between them. Oh, and by the way, their 1966 meeting remains one of the highest scoring games in NFL history, both teams combined for 113 points in a game New York won, 72-41. Obviously, this will be the second best match of today's games as Robert Griffin III and Eli Manning go to war. Speaking of Eli, he has a pretty good record against Washington (10-5 all-time), but the Skins won both meetings last year. Here's hoping that streak isn't extended to 0-3. The re-match will be on 12/3.
*The top offense from 2011 takes on the worst when the St Louis Rams host the Green Bay Packers. It's pretty obvious that this year's Packers aren't the same from last year's outstanding squad, and does it shows. I think it's safe to say that Sam Bradford has gotten over his sophomore slump, wouldn't you agree? St. Louis is already a .500 team. Believe it or not, this will be the 103rd meeting between these teams dating back to the late 1930's. At one point during the series, St. Louis defeated Green Bay 11 times in a row, between 1948 and 1953. The Packers have won the last three meetings in this series, though trail the overall series 46-44-2.
EDIT:
These are the pair of 4:00 games showing today when Tom Brady and the New England Patriots welcome Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets in a key AFC East showdown where not only bragging rights, but first place in the division are on the line. Also, Maurice Jones-Drew and the Jacksonville Jaguars looks to continue their strong showing today when they visit Oakland to take on the Raiders.
The Patriots and Jets continue one of the most intense rivalries in the NFL. Both teams are obviously going in different directions, the Jets have lost two key players on their offense in Holmes and Revis and has been inconsistent, which is explains why they are a long ways off from being a playoff contender. New England hasn't been looking good themselves, especially wen it comes to that offensive line, but nonetheless, New England may be slowly but surely starting to get the form, and they need to if they have any chance of not being upset again following the shocker to Seattle. This will be the 106th meeting between these teams and the overall series between them is that close (New England leads 53-52-1). In the late 60's and early 70's, the Jets owned the Patriots, winning ten games in a row, but heading into the 2000's, New England turned the tide, winning eleven out of twelve meetings between 2003-2008. Head coach Bill Bellichick and Tom Brady are 17-9 and 15-6 against the Jets, respectively, with Bellichick and Brady are 4-3 against Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez.
The Jaguars and Raiders have met only five times since the former team entered the league in 1995. Since then, Jacksonville had won 4 meetings in a row before losing their last meeting, most recently in 2010 - a 31-19 Oakland victory on 12/12. Jacksonville is 2-0 at home against them; 2-1 in Oakland. This will be Dennis Allen's first meeting against Jacksonville, while Mike Mularkey is 0-2 versus Oakland all-time. Blain Gabbert will also have his first game against the Raiders. As for Carson Palmer, he is 0-1 against Jacksonville, as he was with Cincinnati at the time.

This is news, otherwise I would have kept going...
You know, considering that Ben Roethlisberger is a Ohio native (born in Finley, went to Miami of Ohio), he must love it when he gets to return to his stomping grounds four times every year, not to mention that the Steelers must love going to Paul Brown Stadium, where they are 11-2 vs. 7-4 at home.
Pittsburgh have generally dominated the rivalry especially in the last decade, they lead it 52-32, including their memorable 2005 AFC Wild Card showdown. The Steelers has swept the Bengals the past two seasons, and Big Ben is 13-4 against them all time; Head coach Mike Tomlin is 8-2 against Marvin Lewis, who is 5-13 against Pittsburgh all-time.

PLAYOFF PICTURE SCENARIOS: WEEK 17
NFC
GREEN BAY PACKERS (at Minnesota; won earlier meeting in Week 13 (12/2), 23-14 (11-4-0, 2nd Seed, clinched NFC North by virtue of 21-13 win at Chicago on 12/16)
Win vs. Minnesota clinches No. 2 seed, but a loss and either a San Francisco or Seattle win would drop Packers to No. 3 seed.
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (vs Arizona; won earlier meeting @ Arizona in Week 8 on Monday Night Football (10/29), 24-3 (10-4-1, 3rd Seed)
Needs win over Arizona to clinch West and finish as a No. 2 seed with Green Bay loss or No. 3 seed with Packers win. A loss and Seattle win would drop 49ers to the No. 5 seed.
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (vs. St. Louis; loss earlier meeting @ St. Louis in Week 4 (9/30), 19-13 (10-5-0, 5th Seed; clinched playoff berth by virtue of 42-13 win vs San Francisco on 12/23)
Win over St. Louis and San Francisco loss would clinch West — and a No. 2 seed if Green Bay loses or No. 3 seed if Packers win. Otherwise, Seahawks will be the No. 5 seed.
WASHINGTON REDSKINS (vs. Dallas; won earlier meeting @ Dallas in Week 12 (Thanksgiving Day, 11/22), 38-31 (9-6-0, 4th Seed)
Beat Dallas, and the Redskins are East champs and No. 4 seed. Lose, and they are locked in a battle for the final wild-card spot.
DALLAS COWBOYS (8-7-0, 8th)
This is the first time this scenario has happened in 33 years. It's that simple for Dallas: Win, and the Cowboys claim their 19th NFC East division title. A loss eliminates the Cowboys from playoff contention.
There is a faint chance that if the Giants win their 1pm game, and if Dallas beats Washington Sunday night, which would essentially make it a three-way tie at 9-7, the Giants would still be eliminated, due to the Cowboys and Redskins having a better divisional record (both at 4-2 vs, 3-3 for the Giants). The Cowboys would get the nod with the two-way tiebreaker by virtue of their superior record in games played against common opponents -- teams they and the Redskins both played. The Cowboys are 8-4 in those games, with victories the Redskins couldn't get over the Bengals, Steelers and Panthers, while the Redskins are 7-5.
The winner wins the NFC East, and as the No. 4 seed, they will host a first-round game against the No. 5 seed, which will be either Seattle or San Francisco.
NEW YORK GIANTS (vs. Philadelphia; loss earlier meeting @ Philadelphia in Week 4 (9/30), 19-17 (8-7-0, 9th)
No chance to win NFC East; need to win and get help for wild card. They would need the Cowboys, Vikings and Bears all to lose in order to reach the playoffs as a wild-card team. In that case, if the Giants or Redskins end up with a wild-card berth, they will be the No. 6 seed in the NFC and will play on the road in the first round against the No. 3 seed in either Green Bay, San Francisco or Seattle. Yeah, pick your poison.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS (9-6-0, 6th)
Can get in by virtue of two scenarios: The easiest, obviously, is getting a W against visiting Green Bay to guarantee a playoff berth at 10-6, or sneak in at 9-7 and hope the Giants, Lions and Redskins all lose their respective games. Red pill or blue pill, for sure.
CHICAGO BEARS (vs. Detroit; won earlier meeting in Week 7 vs. Detroit on Monday Night Football (10/22), 13-7 (9-6-0, 7th)
This game against the Lions has a lot more riding on than just making the playoffs - it may also decide whether Lovie Smith will still be their head coach next season. It's like this: Chicago wins at Detroit, and, if you happen to see green and gold in the stands - it's that Bears fans need Green Bay to beat Minny.
EXTRA POINTS:
ATLANTA FALCONS (vs. Tampa Bay; won earlier meeting @ Tampa Bay in Week 12 (11/25), 24-23 (13-2-0, 1st Seed; clinched NFC South by virtue of Denver's 31-23 win vs. Tampa Bay on 12/02)
No matter what happens against the Buccaneers, the Falcons are assured home-field throughout the NFC playoffs.
AFC
HOUSTON TEXANS (vs Indianapolis; won earlier meeting vs. Colts in Week 15 (12/16), 29-17 (12-3-0, 1st Seed; clinched AFC South by virtue of 29-17 win vs Colts)
Win at Indianapolis assures Texans No. 1 seed and home-field advantage in the playoffs. A loss could knock them down to No. 3.
DENVER BRONCOS (vs. Kansas City; won earlier meeting @ Kansas City in Week 12 (11/25), 17-9 (12-3-0, 2nd Seed; clinched AFC West by virtue of 31-23 win vs Tampa Bay on 12/02)
Win vs. Kansas City guarantees bye in wild-card round and possibility to finish as No. 1 seed. Loss could drop them to No. 3.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (vs Miami; won earlier meeting @ Miami in Week 13 (12/02), 23-16 (11-4-0, 3rd Seed; clinched AFC East by virtue of 23-16 win vs Miami)
A win vs. Miami and losses by Houston and Denver would mean a top seed (by virtue of head-to-head wins over both teams); a win and loss by Houston or Denver would mean a No. 2 seed; a loss and a Baltimore win drops Patriots to No. 4
EXTRA POINTS:
BALTIMORE RAVENS (vs. Cincinnati; won earlier meeting @ Cincinnati in Week 1 on Monday Night Football (9/10), 44-13 (9-5-0, 4th Seed, clinched playoff berth by virtue of Pittsburgh's 27-24 overtime loss to Dallas on 12/16; clinch AFC North by virtue of 33-14 win vs New York Giants on 12/23)
Can move to No. 3 with win over Cincinnati and loss by the Pats.
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (10-5, 5th Seed; clinched playoff berth by virtue of 20-13 win vs. Kansas City on 12/23)
No matter what happens against the Texans, Indy is locked in as the No. 5 seed. Will Colts rest players vs. Houston?
CINCINNATI BENGALS (9-6-0, 6th Seed; clinched playoff berth by virtue of 13-10 win vs Pittsburgh on 12/23)
No matter what happens against the Ravens, Cincy is locked in as the No. 6 seed.
