After Road To The Gold
10/28/12
10/28/12
There is a knock at the door and Kathy looks up from her place at her husband's desk in his office as Head of the Starlets Division.
Kathy: Come in...
Emma Danielson opens the door and steps inside, walking right over to Kathy, Emma stands firm, arms folded across her chest.
Emma: You wanted to see me?
Kathy smiles.
Kathy: Ah yes, Miss Danielson, please have a seat...
Emma: I'd rather stand.
Kathy shrugs her shoulders.
Kathy: Very well, if you insist...
Emma: Listen, if this is about my therapy, I have been keeping my appoin -
Kathy holds a hand up to stop Emma.
Kathy: This isn't about that, Dr. Halperin has been keeping me well informed of your progress. This is about a favour I need from you.
Emma chuckles.
Emma: Oh really? You mean to tell me there's something your husband can't do for you in his position? Why should I help you, Kathleen?
Kathy: This isn't about Jake, this is simply a request from one woman to another, I need you to do something for me that only you can, your unique ability and stature being what it is.
Emma: And what is that supposed to mean?
Kathy: I need you to send a message, that's why next week I've booked you to face Mercedes Vargas one on one...
Emma: Even if I do beat up Vargas for you, I still don't see what's in it for me?
Kathy: Consider it a match to put you back in the title hunt, what better way to make a statement to the entire division than by destroying the woman who was the runner up in this year's Road To The Gold? Don't do it for me, do it for your career...
Emma: I thought she was your friend?
Kathy: She is, and believe me Emma, if there was any other way, I'd take it. I'm not starting a war with my best friend, I'm preventing one...
Emma: You've been married to him to long, I'm starting to see that you can be quite the bitch when you want to be...
Kathy: Takes one to know one...
Emma: Touche...
Before Emma can continue to consider Kathy's request, The Ace enters his office and upon seeing Emma and Kathy together has a huge grin on his face.
The Ace: Well, it's a bit early for my birthday, but I'll take it...
Emma turns her nose up at the very idea.
Emma: You wish!
The Ace: Oh you have no idea how much...
Kathy quickly interrupts.
Kathy: Actually, Jake, honey, I was just informing Emma of her match next week against Mercedes Vargas...
The Ace shakes his head.
The Ace: Oh no, no, no, that won't do. It's hardly a fair match now is it? Emma's obviously built for comfort not speed, I say we even the playing field somewhat...and you and Mercy go out there and face Emma and Ayla...
Kathy: WHAT?!
Now it's Emma's turn to grin.
Emma: Fine by me. You heard the boss, Kathleen.
Kathy wrinkles her nose at Emma.
The Ace: Think of it as a trust reaffirming exercise, I just want to ensure that there are no hard feelings between you and Mercy over what happened earlier tonight, so next week Opportunity will reunite to face BWA: The Sequel...
Kathy looks less than pleased by her husband's decision.
You know, I knew Jake had been spending too much time talking with Dr Halperin, trust reaffirming exercise, my tail! There would be no trust issues between us if Mercy had taken my advice in the first place and just minded her own personal boundaries - but alas she did not, and here we are. Now before Ayla and Emma see this as some 'perfect opportunity' to divide and conquer, let me remind them that whatever I might feel about my friend on a personal level right now, I cannot and will not take anything away from Mercy V on a professional level.
Some might call it a fluke, others might dismiss it as simple luck, whatever it is, the fact remains that out of the four of us, it was Mercedes Vargas who achieved the most out of this year's Road To The Gold, and whilst I'm happy for her, it also saddens me that when all was said and done, Mercy fell victim to the very same 'curse' of being so close and yet so far that my family and I are painfully familiar with.
Close but no cigar.
In that sense I suppose Mercy has proven herself to be a part of my family, a sister in every other way but blood, and as much as I love her, she must understand that I'm not a teenager anymore, and I will not have her compete for my husband like Tiffany competed for my boyfriends when we were younger. Speaking of boyfriends, Ayla, forgive me for not following the soap opera that is your life on NCW television as closely as others might have, but the fact is I don't care enough about you to care whether or not you've been nesting in another bird's tree lately, all I can really say is that I'm not in the least bit surprised.
So what could you possibly have against me this week for the sake of this one random match that will open Trauma? Are you going to resent me for my part in Alysson's firing, or my defense of Steve's position a month ago? I picked a side and I lost, it happens more often than most people in this business will admit, contrary to popular belief there's no shame in it.
Since I am on such a roll with my seamless segues right now, losing should be something Emma is very familiar with by now, infact the last time I was against Emma in a match, she had the now former World Champion on her side and still somehow ended up on the losing side. I guess these things will happen more and more if you're going to insist that you cheer up your depressed best friend with tapes of Mystery Science Theatre and pick fights with his 'will they, won't they' romance in the middle of hotels rather than actually helping him study wrestling tapes and prepare for the biggest match of his life, you know the really useful stuff.
I would say you don't know what your priorities are Emma, but then I remember that you're the kind of woman who can only prioritise her next round of drinks or her next drunken punch up, so am I really surprised you couldn't help Andrew focus, despite your best intentions? No, not really. Lord knows you have a hard enough time maintaining focus yourself at the best of times, regardless of however much you've been drinking...
The scene is one of Kathy knelt down before her eldest daughter, helping her adjust her fairy costume as she gets ready to go trick or treating with her little sister and auntie Tiffany and Caleb.
Kathy addresses Caleb who is stood in a green goblin mask alongside Tiffany who is rather less in the spirit of things as she has Domino on her hip.
Kathy: Now I'm trusting you to be sensible Caleb, you will look after Soli out there...
Caleb: Absolutely, Mrs C, you have my word.
Kathy: Good.
Kathy then turns to her daughter who's sparkling eyes seem to perfectly compliment her sparkly outfit as she smiles.
Kathy: Now you be a good little girl, and don't eat too much candy, okay pumpkin?
Solitaire simply nods as Kathy kisses her on the forehead. Solitaire then runs up and hugs her father.
Jake: See you later, my little fairy princess.
Solitaire lets go and skips over to Caleb and Tiffany, offering Caleb her hand so she can lead him out the door.
Solitaire: Bye Mommy! Bye Daddy!
Jake and Kathy: Bye sweetie!
Caleb and Tiffany wave back before stepping out of the house together.
