After Collision
11/04/12
11/04/12
(The camera opens on Mercedes Vargas seen with a handful of fans just outside of Richmond Coliseum, dressed in a simple yellow blouse, jeans, and an opened leather jacket on this chilly night. Her attention is divided between signing autographs and answering questions.)
"Reunited and it feels so good."
(Mercedes laughs as she signs an autograph book for a female fan while at the same time trying to engage in conversation.)
Mercedes: You enjoyed the match last night on Trauma?
Female Fan: Yeah, it was pretty good. You and Kathleen never missed a beat out there.
Mercedes: Well, I'm glad you did. I think Opportunity is back and better than ever, wouldn’t you say?
Male Fan: Mercedes, who did you vote for in the election?
Mercedes: I voted for…the candidate who would do the least harm to the country. It’s not like it can’t get any worse, right?
Female Fan: Did you see Kathleen with The Ace out there tonight? That is one bona fied power couple.
Mercedes: Yup, they're quite the item, alright.
(One or two people ask for their picture to be taken. A man stands next to Mercedes, holding up a camera phone and poses before the snapshot is taken. He trades spaces with three female fans, each wearing NCW t-shirts, as another shot is taken. With another stroke of a pen, her last autograph request is fulfilled and she is finally relieved. She parts through the crowd, pulling her tote bag behind her. She turns back and waves.)
Mercedes: Goodnight, Richmond!
(As she heads for the arena parking lot, our scene fades.)
* * * * *
I heard a fly buzz when I died...
(A wreath of white flowers, roses and daises surrounds a closed white casket.)
Minister: We are gathered here today to mourn the sudden passing of a dear friend to all of us…
But I'm pretty sure it was crying. Pretty sure...
(As the grief-stricken stand shoulder to shoulder at the burial grounds, we noticed that Carmen is amongst them, dressed in a jacket, blouse and slacks. Jorge, in a navy blue blazer and slacks, is with her.)
Jorge: She was so young. Of all people, why her? Why did she had to die?
Carmen: It.
Jorge: What?
Carmen: Why did it had to die.
Jorge: I know you two weren't very close, but you will NOT refer to her as a thing!
(A fellow griever from behind offers him a comforting pat on the shoulder.)
Fellow Griever: It's alright, son. She may be gone, but she won't be forgotten.
Nonetheless, I may not have been there physically, but I was here in spirit.
"So, what did I miss?"
(Jorge and Carmen turn around to see Mercedes as she walks up and stands between them.)
Or it could be that I was a little late for the funeral of the creature that named after me. My brother's parrot.
Jorge: Not much, we're just about at the end of the eulogy
Carmen: Come for the grieving, stay for the refreshments.
Mercedes: Great.
Amen to that.

"Prove...myself"?
You know, I thought of at least a dozen reasons why I shouldn’t do this, not the least of which is my career, but you know things are bad when Freya Davis is actually the one telling you that you haven't proven yourself. Nice try, though, sweetheart. They say it’s better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. The sad thing is, Freya, a lot of what you said couldn't be more in doubt. It’s okay, though. Ignorance is bliss. Unless my mind has totally failed me, I’m not the one whose career has been known for pulling a Houdini act. Que no necesito que demostrar mi valía. I don’t have a need to prove myself, Freya, because unlike you, my name hasn’t become synonymous with being a disgrace to the entire wrestling scene. I don’t need to prove anything to anyone, especially you. I’ve already made it. I’m a former Starlets Tag Team Champion, I’ve made it farther than just about anyone else during the Starlets Road to the Gold Tournament, I’m on the short list of those who have defeated the almighty Sydney Knite, regardless of how that came to be, and what have you done? Pray tell, what have you done?
Oh, winning the Starlets Road to the Gold? Yeah, very impressive. To be fair, I guess also being the first-ever Starlets Road to the Gold winner to LOSE a Starlets Championship match at the pay-per-view should be commended, so, yeah, congrats on that, too. Let me ask you something. How did that feel? How did that feel to not be wearing that title belt, hmm? How did it feel to have had your shoulders pinned to the mat for the 1,2,3? Yeah, I bet the memory is not so nice, is it?
All things considered, you really don’t have anything to attach to your name here, do you? While I’m at it, at least I WON my match at the pay-per-view. But then again, this isn’t about win and losses, accolades or accomplishments or titles, this is about an assassination of character. You want to just simply disregard what I’ve done in the past six months as nothing? After coming back from being concussed for the latter part of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012, you want to say that I haven’t done anything noteworthy? I’ve accomplished more in six months than you’ve done in your entire damn career.
What I said about you at Road to the Gold pretty much holds true. You’re the one who have had to prove your worth in this company from day one. Day one, Freya. No one has been given more chances to make something of themselves than you. As much as some people seem to praise your in-ring talent, you always find a way to let them down. It's no wonder you and Jenny are so joint at the hip. Drinking soda and energy drinks, aka crap, is one thing, but the legacies of your families is another, though it's one I wouldn't be proud of. Don't even get me started on the Williams, the very definition of attention whores in this company.
I wouldn’t go as far to say the same about your family, Freya, but they are slowly but surely becoming this. Take your brother, for instance. After what would be his last “Spike TV” column, Spike Kane wrestled his final match and walked away from NCW…for two months. I’m still scratching my head over why he decided to come back. He certainly didn’t have to because of money. He could have been sitting on the couch, taking care of Alysson and living off the royalties of his contract as a main event mainstay and his merchandise sales. It’s not like he’ll suddenly be forgotten. Your brother is a living legend in this company, a Hall of Famer, multiple-time champion. Pretty sure Kelly wasn’t going to offer him another stint as general manger on Collision, either. Doesn’t seem like the office type, and I doubt he'll enjoy being behind an announce desk. Kind of makes you wonder who is next? Is Brad and Nina going to show up this weekend, hmm? Next weekend? Next month? Next year? It wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
Understand this, you've appeared more times in this company than you had kids. Or maybe it's the other way around, I don't know. I think you’re in competition with Crystal to see who will have appeared the most times in NCW in their career.
You want to go there, Freya? Fine. We’ll go there. In fact, we can do this all day if you want, but at the end of the day, words can only mean so much. I would rather take the first plane to the next city we’ll be in this weekend, enter the venue, and wait for the opening bell so I can legally kick your ass. While you were rambling over God knows what else, maybe you forgot the part about your reputation around the locker room and why you’ll always be known as someone who is just here for the sake of being here. You may have everybody else fooled, but not me. Like I said at the interview, it won’ be long before you ride out into the sunset.
Who knows? It may just happen at the end of the year.
Just make sure you leave a ransom note next time. I'll get started on the search posters.
Variety is the spice of life. Come on, people! Since when did the Starlets Division suddenly have four people in it? The fact that I have to either team with or face Jennifer Williams every other week is an absolute testament that the women's division is on the decline, despite The Ace's efforts. But I can't help the sinking feeling that you're the real root of the problem, Jennifer. It’s no secret that you won’t have much to offer in this match. It's painfully obvious that you won’t even take this match seriously because honestly, by the same token, even after three months of holding that title, you’re still nothing but a five-letter word.
F-l-u-k-e, fluke.
We can do this the easy way or the hard way. Either way, you and Freya can continue sipping that Go-Go Juice. It's going to be a long night.
