”Holy crap. I can’t believe it. I…I guess part of me wanted to believe that this day would never come, that there’d be a day many, many years in the future when I could look out across NCW with older, wiser eyes and know when my time had come. But…it’s not to be. In seven weeks, all of this…all we know is going to be gone. Dust in the wind doesn’t feel right, because this is so much more than just a Kansas song. This company, for almost two years now, has been the site of my successes and my failures, my triumphs and my tragedies. I met the woman of my dreams and had the match of my life under the NCW banner. NCW as an entity may die…but her spirit will live on.”
“Maybe in successor companies, maybe just in the alumni that carry it with them wherever they go, but that passion for what we do, that love of our sport and what makes us wrestlers, that’s something that’s inseparable. It’s not tied just to a name, it’s a unifying spirit that drives us all. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I plan to make each and every day we have left in this company the best that the fans have ever seen. And it starts here and now.”
“Dragon. Good to see you in good spirits again. Shame about Kingsley making off with the win last time, but I guess all we can do is adapt and overcome. You’re good at that, man. You’re rolling with the punches, you’re redeeming yourself—because that wasn’t a performance to be ashamed of—and you’re definitely getting some cred in the eyes of the public. They want to see you succeed. The people love a story of redemption, of making more of yourself than you once were. And you’re giving them one hell of a story to follow.”
“As for the new element, the unknown here…Ishimaru Junichiro. The Beast. I’ve met a lot of guys who called themselves beasts, but you seem to back it up. You’ve got the physicality to justify a name like that. But you walked in at a bad time. You’ve got the tail end of a great company. So I tell you what: you make something of yourself, man. You take these months and you make something of them. You can shore up things you don’t feel good about, you can reinforce your strengths…this should be a time that you take as a blank slate. The first thing that comes to mind? Do it. Damn the consequences.”
“You have no obligations to anyone but yourself. Do what you feel makes your matches and your career worthwhile. Dragon’s looking for redemption, you may be looking for glory…but deep down inside I’m still that same adrenaline junkie that walked in the door right off the coast. I’ll do anything for that thrill, and before the doors close on NCW for the last time, I want to try to claim gold. I want to be able to call myself a champion for what I’ve done here. If I can’t…well, then I can’t. But damn if I won’t try. What’s the worst that could happen? I’ll lose and then the company’ll go out of business in three weeks? No guts, no glory. No risk, no thrill.”
“We’re living on borrowed time, but the sands haven’t run out yet. We’ve got so much more we can do and so many more ways to make the fans lose their minds before we shut the lights off for good. So, Dragon…Ishimaru…we’ve got a spot on the stage. Let’s show everyone why NCW was…and still is, for now…the best damn wrestling company the world’s ever seen. Let’s light ‘em up.”
Open on Tiffany and Caleb in the Conway family home. The two are chuckling, and Caleb sighs as he looks back down the hall towards the office of The Ace. He smirks, shaking his head.
”Oh man, the look on Jake’s face when she let him know she was screwing with him…he didn’t know what hit him!”
Tiffany nods, sighing, and she leans against a wall, running a hand through her hair. She bites her lower lip, and the unspoken question hangs in the air for a few agonizing seconds before Caleb reluctantly answers it.
”I’m not sure what I’m going to do. I mean, I’m looking around at other companies, but…it’s just so weird, you know? NCW really felt like a home, and anywhere else…no matter the pay difference, no matter the perks, it won’t feel quite the same. I can search and search and I doubt I’ll find anywhere that…that really means as much as NCW does.”
Tiffany nods, understanding, and walks over, looping her arms around Caleb’s neck as she looks up at him.
”Caleb, nobody’s asking you to find a new federation that you love. Although, that does sound really stupid when I say it…it’s just that you have to be concerned for your future, is all. I know I am, and I hope that I’m not alone in that concern. You’ve got everything it takes to be a star. Just find somewhere where you can really shine.”
Caleb nods, running his hand long Tiffany’s cheek with a smile. He sighs again, shaking his head and looking back into her eyes.
”I mean, who am I? There’s a lot of very athletic guys out there, what makes people want to hire me instead of any other guy who can flip and fly? I know why, but I’m not sure I’m putting it out there properly. It’s just a neurosis thing, I guess. If they don’t know why they should hire me, I’ll make sure they know by the end of the conversation.”
Tiffany grins, nodding, and steps up to plant a peck on Caleb’s cheek. She bounces down with a grin, squeezing the hug before releasing it.
”I knew you would. That’s the kind of person you are: if someone dares you to prove this or that or the other thing, you’ll dive headlong into the insanity without any regard for what might happen to yourself, just because you want the challenge and the thrill. This is a new chapter for you. For us.”
Caleb grins, running a hand through her hair. He leans in to kiss Tiffany briefly before breaking.
”An adventure, for you and me. We can do this. But right now…I’m getting out of the Puppy Love Crossfire. I’ve got a Triple Threat to win. Wish me luck?”
Tiffany smiles, kissing his cheek again.
”Good luck, babe. Knock ‘em dead.”
Caleb grins, nodding, and turns to walk down the stairs. Tiffany watches him walk, sighing to herself, and turns away, an image of Jake and Kathleen on their wedding night, clearly having the time of their lives. Tiffany sighs again, and continues to state at it until we fade to black.
