Disclaimer: I didn't finished... or haven't... I read the spoilers... so yeah... 50 hours is enough to write a review.
So here it is, Mass Effect, the epic from BioWare... and the good part of it is, that this is only the first in a trilogy (SPLEE!!!) This game seems to wager on choices, and the thing is... the choices you make... ACTUALLY EFFECT WHAT HAPPENS!! Here that Fable... **** you Peter.
So... yeah, choices. It ranges from what you say, to what you do. You talk sweet to the right people, you might get some extra info, or money... or even some lovin'. Piss somebody off and it may cost you a BIG lead in your search.
Story:
You play as Commander Shepard, and you are the captian of the Normandy. And it begins with the search for a rogue Turian, by the name of Saren. Saren killed one of your shipmates (Another Turian)... and to find out he was a Spectre. And you fight against the geth, a mechine/organic race and you find out the Saren has teamed up with geth in order to revive the Reapers... some bad mutha****ers. Now... yeah th4ere are some gaps... but hey, play the game if you want to know EVERY detail. Now.. this reminds me HEAVILY of Star Wars... and seeing that it was made by BioWare and the made KOTOR... possible chance they reuse the Mass Effect engine for KOTOR III (I guess not,s eeing as it is a possible MMO)
Gameplay
You start out as one of many classes... Soilder, Biotic, Tech, Vanguard (Jedi)... Infiltrator (Soilder/Tech), and Sentinel (Biotic/Tech). Now..
Soilder is the combat expert, you get to use ALL the weapons and ALL the sheilds and Armor... but, you get no Biotic Powers.
Biotics get all the Force powers... but they get limited weaponry... and the tech is the main defence (Disable sheilds, heal teammates)... so if you haven't nocied Biotic powers... are basically Force Powers: Throw (Push), Lift (Grip), Warp (Lighting), Barrier (Shield), Stasis (Mind Trick)... and others. But, you know, they ware NOT force powers, but the simularites are obvious.
Now, I dont want to be a dick, Mass Effect is not Star Wars, but you can see the influence. But you can use weapons... Shotguns, pistols, sniper rifles, and Assault Rifles... unfortunatly... I played as a Vanguard... so I only got to use the Pistol and Shotgun... but I got all the Biotic powers... so, ROCK! Now the diaglog is... interchangable. you can steer conversations down a whole 'nother path, but it seemed that you can just talk in circles. Or if I said something that pissed off the person, all i do is choose the "Good" responses and it is all erased... WHAT?
If I am an asshole to you... I dont a few sweet words is gonna smooth it over. if your smart, you know how to steer the conversations. But it never really felt like... a choice I made mattered, until it came to Mission Select.
Now, you dont have a set path to go on... but there are some areas which are higher priority... but one planet might offer a hefty reward to catch a criminal on their planet... or to find a missing person, you might gain some valuble intel. So while you choose to do something beside the main missions... you are not punished for doing so... good move.
Graphics and Sound
BEST. VOICE. ACTING. EVER! This... THIS is a MATURE RPG, this feels like a movie,a movie for people like me, a good, and WELCOMED change from the japanese RPGs. And the graphics... this game on a HD Set... epic. Simple as that, the characters are welled mapped and the aliens, they have a realistic look to them... it is like I fully expect to see these things walking around in real life. There is noting to gripe about here.
Overall
Best RPG of 2007 ('08...s eeing as it is re-released on the PC) and BEST RPG I played in a long time... I'm sorry FF fanboys, BETTER than FF7 This is the definition of deep story, memorable characters and moments that make you go..."Wow". And the fact that it is a change from the Jap. RPGs that are littering the market, the change is fresh and welcomed, and Shepard's story of space badassery is better than Cloud's story of Generic RPG hero.
Score: 9.5 out of 10
+ Different Character Classes
+ Terrific Voice Acting
+ Graphics
- reeked of Star Wars
- It begins sloooooooowwwwwww in the first few hours
- ****ing elevators... it is the future... no transporters.
So... thoughts? Opinions? Post 'em here...
