Opeth-"Watershed" 4.9/5
Well, I picked this album up yesterday and WOW. For those who don't know Opeth are a metal band from sweden. The main man behind their musical vision is Mikael Akerfeldt. A very talented musician. They started off playing mostly death metal but slowly Mikaels progressive rock influence took over and now they take the 70's era prog rock of Camel, Cream, Bread, Jethro Tull and Kansas and mix it with the death metal of Entombed and Morbid Angel.
The new album kicks off with the sweeping and beautiful "Coil", acoustic guitars move and swirl with Mikaels amazing clean vocals. Then female vocals intersept his and the song just becomes something so powerful it's hard to put into words. It's progressive and folk orientated. After this trip to heaven we're sent back to hell with the hard riffing of "Hei apparent" that goes from a slower slayer style riff to that of a demented nursery rhyme courtesy of keyboard player Per Wilburg, and unlike the first song Mikaels vocals erupt like the voice of satan himself. But the musicianship is top notch, amazing solos mix with double bass drumming and come together to create a death metal masterpiece, this continues with the haunting "lotus eater" with it's clean vocal approuch that recounts the black metal master "Ihsahn's" debut solo effort, each song is a true masterpiece, this is by far opeth's best album and that is asaying something because this band has continually released albukm after albukm of amazing material....
