*cough*
This game doesnt suck, but it isn't good, but it is a a good distraction until Smackdown vs Raw 09 comes out.
Story
*facepalm*... honestly you start as a Mexican superstar by the name of Suicide (WhoIsSuicide.com). And you get jumped by LAX and the resultant asskicking leaves you without a memory. So the "game" begins with you in the painfully shallow CAW mode. And when Is ay Shallow, I mean, No Mercy had more options. You can't edit height nor weight, but I'm willing to look past it, as you are playing a set character.
And did I mention, 5 CAW spots... yeah, 5.
So you join TNA and you rise through the ranks to become TNA World Heavyweight Champion. Now, while that is cool, you dont get to hold the belt, you just get a picture of you holding the title, and you cant defend it, once you win it, you move on to the next tier.
The controls are simple and easy to get a hand of. But... this is where TNA shines and fails. It shines when you see how the moves just seemingly transitions beautifully. In one match I was Chris Sabina nd I was facing against Samoa Joe, I go for a suicide dive and he catches me for a powerslam, and I turn it into a Tornado DDT, all with no slowdown or pause. But while the reversals are nice to see, the computer seems to have an uncanny ability to reverse everything you throw at them. In one match with Sting, he reversed everything I threw at me, all my limb damage came from reversals... lame.
While the AI can be unbalanced at some parts, once you ge it down, you can get by it very easy. the game isn't very long, I made it through the story mode in one sitting, now I know they have mentioned DLC, but 'eh, I'm gonna skip it. The submission system seems to be tied witht he pin system,y ou have a 3 count to beat, you beat it you escape, you dont you tap out, and while again making it simple, I feel that it is too simple as it leads to cheap submission losses.
But TNA seems to fail at catching the individual feel of bring one of the TNA superstars. They all play the same. Think about this, playing SDvR, playing as John Cena feels like playing as Cena, you're not gonna see Cena do moves t a moonsault or spring off the ropes. They seem to have grouped all the wrestlers as X-Division, Normal, Heavyweight, Super Heavyweight. All the XDiv wrestlers wrestle the same, the heavyweights are th4e same and etc. which is a shame, because they have a lot of unique personalities. When I wrestle as Joe, I want to FEEL like I AM SAMOA ****ING JOE! When I wrestle as AJ Styles, I want to feel like I am just flying around, while you can, it just feels like 'eh.
The match types dont really very, you have Single, Tag, and Ultimate X. No Six Sides of Steel, no Full Metal Mayhem, no Hardcore match. ALL matches are No DQ, and there is only chair... I'm sorry am I playing WCW vs NWO: World Tour, oh wait, there were more weapons. The Tag matches, were... lame. NO double team moves, none and they feature LAX, Team 3d, the Motor City Machine Guns and Beer Money and you cant do any of their tag moves. And the tag matches all play with camera panned all the way back so it doesnt feel like you are in the action.
No for your CAW, did I mention 5 CAW spots, I did... well let me say it again, 5 CAW SPOTS! You get aa good base of moves, but you have to unlock them by playing the horrid story mode, and the moves are, interchangeable, there is no balance between them,, until you get to more power moves, which wont matter because Sting aka Captain Reversal will just hit you with the double knees to the gut.
The game looks top notch and the wrestlers do match their real life counter parts, but they all have the dipped in wax look to them, which reminds me of the early 360 basketball games, where realistic meant that your player would dip themselves in car wax before a game. The entrance are accurate, right untll the get off the ramp and then... cut to the match. The sound it just.. commentary in wrestling games should just be cut, because after the 5th match you've heard it all.
Rental; plain and simple. This game does serve as a good look into the future in what could be a VERY fun wrestling game. It does offer a good distraction for a while. This game is meant to be played in chunks, and not some much as one big meal. But the flaws are just things that cant be excused, you cant defend belts in exhibition mode, no tag moves, no trademark moves, no submission finishers (no Anklelock), and a limited story mode. Packaged with a shallow CAW mode.
And that is shame the game has a good engine, and the moves are well animated. But have to admit, it is fun to play from time to time with A friend. Online mode.. 1 on 1 only.. EPIC FAIL!
Score: 6.5 out of 10
Recommend: Rental.
+Moves are animated well
+Fast paced gameplay
+Graphics
-Horrible Commentary
-Wrestlers seems to pop up after every move
-Limited CAW mode
-Could of been better
-Weak Online mode
