The scene opens up in a large office, with an old man sitting at the end of the table. You can obviously see the man is stressing about the meeting, he’s constantly wiping his brow and his shirt is a bit drenched with sweat. He’s constantly drinking the glass of water provided to him, wiping his brow after each sip. The doors behind him open and he turns around, seeing what the audience sees, Charlie Velez. Charlie begins walking towards the man, who stands up to greet him.
“Mr. Velez, so nice to see you!” says the old man.
“Walter Drake, right? Nice to finally meet you.” asks Charlie.
“The feeling is mutual, Mr. Velez,” says Walter, and both men sit down. Charlie sits next to Walter, who is still sweating. Charlie puts his hand on Walter’s shoulder.
“You can calm down now,” Charlie says, and both share a laugh.
“It’s hard not to be intimidated when meeting with you, Mr. Velez. I mean, that picture of you right outside of this office, it’s something else,” says Walter.
“You mean the one with the President and me? Yeah, Barack and I hang out whenever we have some free time, kick back, play some basketball, have some drinks, you know, guy stuff,” Charlie tells Walter, having a slight grin on his face while saying it. “But we’re not here for that, we’re here concerning renewing our contract for the Velez Television line at your stores. Now I’m well aware that the contract expires next month, and that you’re holding out for double of what we gave you originally. Now, I’m obviously not willing to give it to you-“
“And why is that?” Walter says, cutting off Charlie. “While your brand of televisions obviously is the top seller in my store, it’s not you, or anybody else selling them. It’s me and my people at Better Buy who sell them. I mean no offense Mr. Velez, but we’ve put more work than anybody else to make you money.”
Charlie nods his head, smiling, collecting his thoughts before he says something.
“So then we have a problem here. Walter, I would love to keep you as a business partner, but your demands are ridiculous. Yes, you’re physically selling the televisions, and yes you have to actually talk about the customer, but why do you think people know the brand? Do you think you Walter, or some eighteen year old girl who works at Better Buy are the selling point to this? People buy it for one person and one person only,” Charlie says, pointing to himself. Walter seems agitated by this.
“Mr. Velez, I’m trying to be rational-“
“You think you’re being rational Walter? You know what asking for more money means, don’t you?”
Walter sits around, trying not to look at Charlie, still wiping his brows.
“That means people lose jobs Walter. That means in this economy, you, not me, we’re going to have to cut budget and cut people. It won’t be because I want to, trust me Walter, if it was up to me I would have everybody in America with a job right now, but you’re not thinking long term Walter. You’re thinking about yourself, and only yourself right now and not about that eighteen year old girl losing her job, or that fifty five year old man who is looking for money to save up for retirement. Walter, what you’re doing now…THAT is irrational,” says Charlie “so what I’m going to do is leave this contract right here, and if you choose to sign it, fine,” Charlie stands up from his seat, and begins to walk out of the room, but before he does, he leans over towards Walter’s ear to whisper something “but if you don’t, you’re costing people jobs here.”
Charlie fixes his work coat and begins to head out, and the scene fades to black with Walter staring right at the contract.
We open up again with Charlie Velez sitting on his couch in his office. His tie is loosened and top button unbuttoned, obviously having a hard day.
“This Friday I step into the ring with two men I should know well, but to be honest with you nCw, I hardly know these guys at all. They were just business partners who sometimes crossed paths with me and my friends. Brad Kane, Joe Everyman…I don’t know what else to say about you two. You two impressed me a bit, a tiny bit, when we worked together, but now we have to face each other in a new arena. Around new fans, they will cheer for you two and seeing you as a bigger threat then I am. But we all know that this isn’t true. While you two, Kane and Everyman, were winning titles and gaining fame in nCw, you both know the legacy of wrestling that I had collected, the legacy that both of you tried so hard to be like.”
Charlie points over to his wall, showing the belts he had won from those past federations he was in.
“You both tried hard to be just like me, but you couldn’t and I know it must be eating at you inside. In nCw, you’re icons, great wrestlers who finally got their time to shine…only to be put into the ring with the same guy who tried so hard to be, but just couldn’t find the skill or talent to be like. I’m back, and trust me, I’m better then you remember. So when we step into the ring this Friday, I don’t want you to think about the old Charlie Velez, the ones you tried hard to be. I want you to think about what you are now, two wrestlers who have finally realized their potential…and after Friday, I just want you to remember that even with that, with that new light that the both of you found, you still couldn’t beat me. That new you, it means nothing to me.”
Charlie stands up, and begins to fix his tie and suit.
“Boys, now that I’m around things will never be the same. Because I’m not just the greatest in the world…I’m money. I have to get back to more important things.”
Charlie nods his head and begins to walk out of the room, and the camera fades to black.
