"If a man can bridge the gap between life and death, if he can live on after he's dead, then maybe he was a great man."
-James Dean
-James Dean
*The camera falls on the interior of a darkly lit corridor deep underground beneath the graveyard of Dunwich, New York. These are the catacombs, a macabre collection of bones and skulls which liter these labyrinthine halls. Deep underground skulls sit in silent screams, lining the walls and decorating the path which runs from the graveyard to the estate house. It is here in this spectacle of horrors that the camera pans to a room off shooting the main path. It is a chapel hidden deep within the confines of the catacombs within. The massive chamber is complete with pews dating back to the 1800's in origin, a cross sits high above beside the figure of a hanging skeleton...
... in it's pristine but horrific beauty we find the lone figure of the fallen one. His head bowed, lying on one knee... deep in prayer as he looks down, away from the figure upon the cross. The foul stench of death all around him as he cries out to the one on high.*
Seph: Uranicus abbas , sto me in meus hora of postulo.
(Heavenly father, stand with me in my hour of need. Grant me the strength to destroy my enemies who be not in thy mercy. Give me the power to bring them to heel. Grant me the clarity to see through their efforts and father grant me the grace to do what must be done. For thou art the power and the strength and the glory. Eternally. Amen.)
*Seph then stands crossing himself with the catholic blessing. His head still bowed in silent reverence as he moves toward the exit. He grabs a lone candle, a single light in the dark, placing it inside a glassed container. The damp air attacks the candle's flame but Seph held it up as he proceeded his way back to the main path. He stood first looking to the left and then to the right. First the path back to where he started then to the path ahead. Seph just stops dropping his head a bit. Before speaking aloud. His voice echoing in the underground halls.*
Seph: I find myself at a crossroads in my life, Doc. On the one path, the safe path I can turn from here. Abandon the title. Walk away from it and it's glory back to the land of the dead. Lose myself among the remnence of the past and seek peace and solace once more. Or I can go on and leave my fate to the whims of chance. The one path is safe, it is comforting. To abandon the ways of war. To forget battle once and for all. To live in and find the peace which has eluded me so long. But for the chance of glory. For the chance of honor. For the chance to once more stand in defiance and yell triumphantly those immortal words 'I am legend!'. Would any man turn from the path? A coward might... for cowards fear the unknown. They hide, they stray from danger. Always glancing over their shoulders. Am I a coward then? No, I am not. Are you? You fear that you haven't what it takes. You fear the idea of loss. The idea of people not wanting you. The fear that somewhere deep down inside what I say is true. That I am better. That I am superior. What path would you chose, Doc? The path of safety? The path of peace? The coward's path? Me... I have chosen mine. I will continue and I shall not fear.
*Seph turns onto the right path. The path that leads further down into the darkness of the catacombs. The path is twisting and turning the camera following silently as he walks. Suddenly a sound from an off corridor, the sound of a child's laugh, fills the viewers ears. The cameraman swings the camera around to look but sees there is nothing there. Suddenly Seph's voice calls in the dark.*
Seph: Do not fear.
*The camera looks back at him. The camera slightly shaking*
Seph: I am here. I have opened this door for us, and together we shall pass through it.
*Seph turns back walking a bit more. Suddenly another cry in the dark. That of a woman screaming. Seph seems to ignore the sound as the camera continues looking back and forth. Unsure of the location of such a noise. Seph just stops and stares to a section of wall shattered and broken and peers inside. His eyes staring deep then suddenly his face locks into a sadistic grin.*
Seph: You can hear them, can't you? The songs of the dead? The sounds of their sweet torture? It is like a symphony for me. They're suffering is like sweet nectar to me and here it is strongest. It is because of this.
*He points into the darkened hole as the camera moves to look inside and the sight is one of horrific evil...
... a pile of bones more than six feet deep. Hand bones jetting up from the pile, mixed with skulls. Many of the skulls their mouths open locked in eternal screams of torment and terror. Legs stripped far from their torso lie strewn about. It is a scene of mass slaughter and carnage as rats run over the dried rotten remains as the camera pans back to Seph smirking as he stares down in the hole*
Seph: Behold the victims of the Darkside. Terrifying is it not. A pit of bones over six feet deep filled with those who have crossed me over the years. Filled with the bodies of men and women who have dared to defy my will. These halls are filled with their final moments. Lost in terror. Like the Athenians of old lost in the terrifying maze of Minos they are trapped here. Their deafening screams echoing in these halls. Will you join them, Doc? Will your terrified screams echo in this pit of despair? Or like Ezekiel's bones will you rise up and reclaim lost Jerusalem? That is the question you must ask yourself. Whether or not you are willing to risk everything. Your friends, your family, your career, even your very life to face me. So, what will it be? The safe path or the long one? I have made my choice, have you, Doc? Are you truly ready to give me your all? Or will you end up like these bones here? Forgotten, broken, and forever tormented for the life you could have had...
*Seph just smiles darkly as he leans in and blows out the candle causing the room to go darker and his eyes to shine in the camera's flashlight like cat's eyes as he closes his statement.*
Seph: ... if it hadn't have been for me.
*With that he turns and walks further into the blackness. The camera once more pans back to the pit of bones focusing on one hand in particular then slowly it moves, it's fingers closing as if beckoning the viewer to come and join the pile, a macabre message as the scene fades to black.*
