*The scene opens up to Severe Payne standing outside of what looks like an inner city bistro. He blends in with a small crowd of people that are sitting at tables with the umbrellas in the middle. As many as thirty or more lunching citizens are seen enjoying sandwiches and salads on a warm spring afternoon. The audible but not overbearing sound of voices and laughing makes it apparent that the atmosphere here is relaxed and happy for the most part. Payne is wearing blue jeans with flip flops and a tourist-esque button-up shirt with cartoonish pictures of palm tree patterns all over it. He's checking his watch, waiting on a one Chad Lights to show up for an interview. Just as he looks from his wrist, Chad seemingly appears out of thin air, smiling amidst the porch full of bistro patrons. The two men exchange a quick smile and a firm handshake. Payne motions with his hand that they can walk down a side alley beside the restaurant.[/i]
"Good to see you again Mr. Payne. Now I just have to ask...um............why are we walking down this alley for the interview?"
"Chad, it seems like every time a superstar gived an interview, it's in a gym, an office, or something like that. I figure since I don't mind being the odd one out anyway, we can take a nice long walk down "inglis alley". It's an alley that makes a bunch of turns and winds up around the old side of town. Most of the buildings that line the alleyway are abandoned or out of business. It's an excellent place to just clear your mind, ya know?"
The two men start walking down beside the bistro down in the alley, where the sounds of the happy people stuffing their face becomes more of a background blur. Chad pulls out a hand sized notepad and starts reviewing questions in his head as he walks next to Payne.
"Well, it certainly is a different way of doing an interview. But hey, whatever works for you. As long as we get back in one piece. Now, I have to ask the question that's on everyone's mind. What is going on with you and your rookie young blood? Chris doesn't seem like he wants to fall so close to the tree,
"Chad, I'm gonna say this one time.....only once."
The two men stop and Payne looks directly into Chad's eyes with a furious beam of rage.
"What Chris decides to do is his business. He was trained by the best for many years. If he decides to go and carve his own warpath, thinking he's the one that invented the alpha male syndrome, then he will make his own mistakes and pay for them accordingly. As far as I know, we're still on the same side. But I do know this: It won't take many more chair shots to Adam Knite or any similar wrestler before he winds up getting his payback. That's all I'm gonna say about Chris. I haven't talked to him in a couple weeks, in or out of the ring. As a wrestler I think he will be a great man to have watching my back. But he will have his butt handed to him if he thinks he's gonna just do as he wishes.
As a father, I worry about him making the right decisions. I worry that he's gonna get greedy and impatient, two things that are cardinal sins in the wrestling world. *sigh.........The thing is Chad, I have the dilemma of conflicting emotions since I'm his dad and a fellow superstar...I guess time will play out the events that it will....
Payne backs up and relaxes, going back to his previous mood and posture. Chad looks at him a bit bewildered at first, not sure if he was gonna snap.. After a few seconds, he starts to walk along side Payne again.
"Ok.....Well, That definitley clears up alot about your's and Chris' relationship. We'll get the other half of that from Chris Payne tomorrow, when I interview him in New York City. Now, on to this sunday!"
"Jack Hammond. Good wrestler. Former X-Division AND world champion. Obviously he's been around the block a few times, like you, and now you two have a date for this sunday. Before getting into the nitty gritty, I'd like to hear your general thoughts on Jack Hammond."
Payne rubs his chin for a second, sinking into a rather deep thought process before answering. He slows his pace a bit.
"Jack Hammond is different. I've studied his matches over the past week and I gotta say he definitley has a way of doing things on his own. This guy's a high flying martial artist. Now I'm not gonna sit here and say I've got him pegged or anything like that, but if you want my general thoughts on Jack Hammond, then there ya go."
"Why Jack Hammond at 'A Night to Remember' ? Is there an ongoing feud we don't know about? "
*chuckle "No not exactly. I mean, not as far as I know. You see, it seems like over the past month or so I've been in a lot of matches with at least two or three other superstars, which is a lot of fun, and very good for me to continue to sharpen my abilities. However, I think it's time for me to be involved in a one-on-one match. Ever since my match with ADAM KNITE, I learned that I needed to concentrate on other aspects of wrestling besides the ones I was training non-stop with. "
"Adam defeated me. I put the word out that I wanted a good singles match for this Pay-Per-View. I'm guessing that the right connections were made, and Jack didn't have a dance partner on the first of May."
The scenery starts to get much more run down the more they walk. Nothing but faded brick and demolished buildings line each side of the narrowing alleyway.
"We certainly look forward to that contest on sunday, Payne. One thing I wanna know is, are there any thoughts of championship ventures in that brain of yours? Any goals that involve winning nCw gold any time soon?"
The sky above looks as if it's turning a slight grey. The more they walk, the less buildings line the sides now. Now it's just rubble, a couple of make shift shacks, and lamp posts with dead bulbs, evident by the lack of illumination this time of evening.
Two homeless men are sitting amidst some brick debris on the left side. With the question still in his head, he walks over to the two men and hands one of them what appears to be money from his pants pocket. The two men shake his hand. Payne then waves at them and walks back to Chad to continue their path.
"Well, I have thought about the X-Division, and about another belt that I think would fit just fine around my waist. In the number one contender match I had, the victor I was not. What else can I say? I didn't get pinned, but more imortantly, I didn't pin anyone either. My time will come."
"Ya know, alot of people run their mouths about how Severe Payne has little to amount to, asking what I should have to prove this late in my career. I just laugh at them, Chad. I just laugh at the fact that they have no idea, and IF......and I do mean IF those wrestlers are good enough, willing enough, and have the heart to last as long as I have, then they will see for themselves what it's about. It's not about proving anything. I don't care what a wet-behind-the-ears punk thinks about me. That goes for the guys with time under their belt. This is a crazy business, and it's my life. It won't be long, I WILL have a championship."
The two men come up around a corner where suddenly they see on each side: Two buildings with people bustling in and out of them. Cars are seen up ahead in the parking lot, the evening is getting dark as they approach the two restaurants.
"Wow......Who would have thought that a Ruby Tuesdays and a Macaroni Grill would be at the end of that creepy alley......labryinth. Huh........Interesting."
"That goes to show you Chad.......When things look bleak, run-down, or irreversible, you just gotta keep walking, and know that you WILL make it to a better day.....*chuckle.......Guess I could ohave been a little less cheesy about it but I wanted you to see the literal sense of it."
"Ya.....ya it was cheesy *laughs......but I get what you mean Payne. You sure have a wise way of doing things. Not that you're old or anything (*mutual laugh)......I guess this is where we end it then. Then I'm catching a cab. I'm on my way to New York to see a one Chris Payne for part two. Any last thoughts?"
Payne changes his outward poe and demeanor.....looks in the camera directly and appears as if he has been switched like Jekyll and Hyde......
"It has been a long time coming. I've not had a match in a couple weeks, and I've done absolutely nothing but train and ready myself for this sunday. Jack Hammond.....I've studied, watched, and even learned your style over the past week. To say that I'm prepared would be a colossal understatement.......You better be ready Jack. Because once you're in that ring, I can promise you one thing....that is you'll be facing Severe Payne at his 'A' game and I will answer the question: Will you be able to beat Severe Payne?......Well. like you always say.....HOW HARD CAN IT BE!!?"
