Open on Emma Danielson sits in her hotel room with Andrew Jacobsen, tapping her foot. She looks around impatiently, half-drained bottle of, unusually, Sapporo in her hand. A laptop sits open on the room's table, some basic facts about Tara Fenix, including the moves she most frequently uses, her connections to other nCw wrestlers, and her history as a wrestler, displayed in a text file. Her fingers drum on the tabletop a bit and she groans, exasperated.
“Dammit! Where is she? She was supposed to be here ten minutes ago!”
Andrew reassuringly pats Emma's back, rolling his eyes at his friend's outrage. He rubs her back a bit, trying to relieve her tension.
“Emma, it's okay. You said yourself that Hiroko's not the most punctual person on the planet. Besides, it's not like you don't have over a day until your match. You can take the time to think more about strategy.”
Emma throws her hands up, looking at Andrew like he'd just suggested a menage-a-trois with Julietta Lee.
“That's WHY she's coming over! It's all strategy! First for dealing with Tara, then for Joanne! I thought I explained that to you already! Jesus, I didn't think you were THAT thick.”
Suddenly, a knock comes at the suite door. Emma jumps up, excited, and runs over, unlocking the door. A young Japanese woman stands at the door, wearing a high-collared greatcoat and a half-black half-white outfit with a cross over the chest.
She grins at Emma, enveloping her in a hug. Emma squeals in joy, hugging the woman back.
“Hiro-chaan! So good to see you! Where were you? I was getting worried!”
The woman pulls back, walking into the room. She looks back at Emma as the door gets closed.
“I was running a bit late. Had some things to finish up at work. How are you, Emma? You look great!”
Emma blushes a tiny bit, looking to Andrew, who's thoroughly confused at the sudden show of both energy and happiness from the normally complacent outside the ring Danielson. Emma rolls her eyes at him, walking the other woman over and sitting down at the table with her.
“I'm doing great. Hiro, this is Andrew Jacobsen. You know, the kid from high school I told you about? X-Divison Champion, long story there. Andrew, this is Hiroko Fujinami, one of my old sparring partners.”
Andrew leans over the table a bit, offering a handshake which is received by Hiroko warmly. Andrew grins at her.
“A pleasure to meet you, Miss Fujinami. I'm glad we can have you here to help us out.”
Hiroko rolls her eyes at Andrew, leaning back in her chair. She shrugs off her coat, leaving it hanging off the back of her chair, and looks to Emma.
“He's certainly a flatterer. So, you said we've got two opponents to scout out here. I did some research on both of them, and I gotta say, you should be more worried about Tara. Woman's won a lot of titles and when she says she's got some name power to back her up, she's not kidding. Angel, Doc, both former World Champions. Before she got here, she'd only lost seven times in four years. That's an insane record, Em. She's a former World Heavyweight Champion. As in, she won a title that was as important as the one that's being contested at A Night To Remember.”
Emma blinks, looking at Hiroko like she'd just sprouted wings and begun singing in Aramaic about the glories of the Soviet Union.
“Whoa, whoa. World Heavyweight Champion? She was a World Heavyweight Champion? Jesus, no wonder she's been talking like she was God's gift to wrestling. Hiro, thanks for letting me know about THAT...it means I can scratch off that she's completely delusional from the long, long list of “What's wrong with Tara Fenix?” Not that she's cleared as perfectly sane, mind you...”
Hiroko giggles, pulling over the laptop and looking it over. She nods, reading through the nCw match history and signature/finisher list for Tara. She nods, absentmindedly curling a lock of hair around her finger.
“Hmm. Yeah, interesting. So she uses a superkick as one finisher. Now, that's easy to counter. Jst grab the foot and you could go anywhere from there. Ankle lock for the submission, spin her around to knock her off balance, anything. That double underhook tornado DDT, the Fenix's Wings, that's trickier. I'd normally suggest going for a back body drop, but that it's a tornado DDT means it's going to be off the top turnbuckle. If you could try to reverse into a Northern Lights suplex, that'd be optimal. There's always the Valentine as a counter, but that might kill her...oh, and a figure-four. You know how to counter that, I already taught you.”
Emma grins, patting Hiroko's head. She sips her beer, nodding.
“Yeah. You were always good with that sort of info. Hey, there's beer if you want some.”
Hiroko nods, eyeing up the bottle of beer in Emma's hand.
“Yeah. Could I get one of those? Been a while since I had the chance to drink freely.”
Emma nods to Andrew now, who walks into the kitchen, grumbling. Emma and Hiroko turn their attention to the screen again, moving back to Tara's signature moves. Hiroko clears her throat, reading over the list quickly.
“Okay. Sharpshooter? If you can flip her onto her gut, even if your legs are still locked up, you can reach back and turn it into an inverted STF by clamping on a facelock with your hands. Double knee facebuster, you use one of those, so I'd imagine you know how to reverse it. Another double underhook move, that can use a back body drop. Anything high-flying can always be countered by getting your knees up. Aaand...ooh, a shiranui. That's a toughie.”
Andrew comes back with two beers, handing the opened bottle of Sapporo to Hiroko and cracking open his bottle of Rolling Rock. Hiroko nods to him, taking a sip.
“Thanks. Okay, for a shiranui...while she's running up the turnbuckle, as she jumps off, flip with her and clamp on a crossface. If you need to know how that looks, look up “shiranui counter” on Youtube.”
Emma whistles to herself, looking at a modest Hiroko.
“That's friggin' impressive. So, we've got some ways to make it so each of Tara's big moves never hits right. I like it. Talk about your strategy, talk about your carefully thought-out plans...okay, now to Joanne. Here, I'll bring up the listing for you.”
She does so, tabbing out to another file with Joanne's info. Hiroko nods, reading it over with almost inhuman speed. She calmly begins speaking not five seconds after the file's brought up.
“Surfboard, whip her over your head and turn it into a bow and arrow backbreaker, maybe? A kick's a kick, and since she's running, just drop to your back. Watch her sail right over you. Cobra clutch, try and take out her head with your free hand or maybe sweep her legs out from underneath her? Sounds good to me...frickin' a, she uses that? That convoluted, hopping-on-one-leg neckbreaker? Leg, definitely. Take it the hell out. And that stupid fist drop? Just MOVE during the ten seconds it takes her to set it up!”
Emma raises an eyebrow at Hiroko's harsh condemnation of Joanne's moveset. She sips her beer again.
“Yowch. I take it you're not so hot on Joanne's choice of moves?”
Hiroko shakes her head, snorting.
“Too much flash, not enough substance. What you want is to be quick and deadly. Don't allow your opponent any time to counter, just blast the hell out of them.”
Andrew nods in assent, interjecting now.
”She's right. Joanne might be a good brawler, but her moves take way too long to hit for how much pain they dish out. You can use that to your advantage. Try to look for an opening while she's going for one of those ones with a big windup and surprise her.”
Emma nods, as does Hiroko. Hiroko looks back to the list for a moment to refresh her memory before resuming her analysis.
”Good call. Now, her finishers...brass-knuckles aided punch. Just gotta dodge that one. You could grab the arm and go for some armbar variant, but that's if you want to add injury to insult. Ow, the Go To Sleep. You could try to slip around front and DDT her, around back and set up for a million different counters. If she's already thrown you off, try to grab her head and bring her around for a facebuster. And for that last one, that crazy super piledriver...maybe throw your weight forward and try to land on top of her. That's my thoughts on her moveset. As for the rest of her fighting style...she seems like she's got quite a brawling background, so you two should be perfect matches for each other.”
Emma grins, finishing off her beer and nodding to Andrew, who sighs and goes to get her another one.
“Man, you really know how to break it down, don't you? That was so easy, even Tara could understand it. Thanks for putting in the time to give me some advice, Hiro-chan.”
Hiroko smiles back at Emma, patting her back.
“No problem. I'd do anything for a friend. Look, I know you can get this match won. You've got the tools, you've got the drive. Let's see you bring the heat, Miss Future Women's Champion.”
Emma nods, standing up and walking over to the couch. She sits down, waving Hiroko over.
“Hey, stay a while. We'll order a movie and have some fun. What do you say?”
Hiroko grins, running over and sitting down with her.
“Deal!”
Andrew walks back out into the main room with the whole cooler, sitting on the couch with the two women. Emma picks up the remote, and we fade to black on the trio squabbling over what movie to order.
“Dammit! Where is she? She was supposed to be here ten minutes ago!”
Andrew reassuringly pats Emma's back, rolling his eyes at his friend's outrage. He rubs her back a bit, trying to relieve her tension.
