Thirty five days ago
We were in this same spot
Thirty five days ago
I showed both of you what I could do
Neither of you believed
Neither of you knew my power
You thought me just a priest
The word itself being empty
I was just some overbearing man
Forcing people to listen to garbage
Now you know
You've seen the power I weild
And you won't take heed
You won't prepare
You won't absolve yourself
I care not for this title
I used to believe it mattered
I once thought having it would aid me
That was all rubbish
Fight amongst yourself for your prize
I care not
I am here to be the light
That banishes away the darkness
To be the Dawn
After the long night
The wicked are many
My congregation is few
And yet
You still cannot be rid of us
Make your threats
Issue your promises
You cannot stop the righteous tide
From crashing on the shore
And washing all of you away.[/b]

{Karras was back in Montana, whatever business he had last week with Amanda's Masters was concluded. He promised to listen, and listen he did. They made several good points, and Karras had a tough time considering them. He sat in the chair at the dinner table, resting his held in his palm as his elbow rested on the table. Desiree was doing the evening dishes, working effortlessly, even without her eyes.}
Amanda: That still amazes me how she can do that...
{Amanda had returned with them from the visit to the club, and Karras was thankful for her presence. She had a wealth of information, and shared it without him having to pry. That was good. If her Masters were willing to let him know what he wanted right away, it showed their intent might not be as evil as he previously thought.}
Karras: She is a strong woman. People believe her to be suffering like this, but she accepts that it is a path to God she cannot falter on. Like that there are no sidetracks, nothing to get distracted by.
Amanda: Have you ever done that to anyone else?
Karras: No. Is that a confession, Sister?
Amanda: No, Father. My soul is clean.
Karras: Good.
{She wasn't exactly telling the truth, and he didn't exactly believe her, but they both let the whole topic end there.}
Amanda: Do you believe what they told you?
Karras: I'm not certain. It makes plenty of sense, but it still could be a trick.
{His cold eyes turned to her.}
Karras: You'd tell me if it was, wouldn't you?
{She didn't even blink, just matched his gaze.}
Amanda: If it was, I wouldn't even know. They chose me because of my connection to this place. That does not mean I was given all the details for you to torture out of me with your unique... 'gifts'.
Karras: You've been clean with me so far, Amanda. I will trust your word for now, and give it my honest thought. You're welcome to remain here if you choose.
Amanda: Thank you, Father.
{She excused herself from the table, and exited the room. Karras turned his eyes back to Desiree, watching her work.}
Karras: You know, Sephiroth asked if I had any family. The answer to that question from the way I view things is yes. We are all God's children. He is the Father and he placed us all here for a reason, thus in a certain way every man, woman and child that has ever walked this earth is my family. However, the answer he's expecting is No. There's nobody you can attack. Nobody you can send Cleo to abduct. None. But that doesn't mean I have nothing to fight for.
{He waved a hand in Desiree's direction.}
Karras: People like her are worth fighting for. People who can admit their mistakes, and try to overcome them. People who feel wrath and the torment of sin, and walk through it with their head held high. Those people are worth fighting for. Saving the damned from themselves, and saving the weak from you Sephiroth. Anger is always the first response to an intervention, and since my work was undone at Reborn, that is what you feel now. You see your wife beside you, and you think of the pain she endured and how angry she became. But over there.. is the finished product. Over there is a woman who knows that she can lose everything, and still not be lost. That is the spirit of humanity.. the flame of hope that burns inside each of us.
{He tapped his chest with his hand}
Karras: The fire in here.. that blazes unwavering. It cannot be extinguished by threats of death, or promises of vengeance. I do not carry fear for you Sephiroth, only pity. For in your quest to play the part of the scary monster, you lost sight of what made you human. There is nothing you can do to stall my conviction. She protected you, and paid for her own mistakes. Now, I will make you answer for yours. I will not tell you that you are wrong. I will not try to sway you to stop. We shall see if the fates truly lie with you. You wish to punish me... do so.
{Karras let the words sink in, then shrugged.}
Karras: Much as you are quick to impart your wisdom on me... I have something for you.. Momento Mori... Remember.. that one day, even you.. will die.
{Karras stood up as Desiree finished the dishes. She walked over to him, and he extended a towel, which she held a hand out for.}
Karras: Gold does not interest me in the slightest, and once I'm finished with the two of you, you can fight over it if there is anything left. Tempestad turned his back on God, and now he finds himself alone in a world he used to master. Coincidence? No. But I suppose this is your final chance is it not? Here you are, once again placed between me and the monster, only this time there is no more pretense at peacemaker. I was asked if I would kill for the people I love? The real question is.. are you prepared to die for the people you don't?
Desiree: Will you? Will you die for those people who sin?
Karras: Not before I'll see them off to the next life, sister.
Desiree: As it should be, Father. As it should be.
Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn.
