Client File: Burns, Philip
Session Date: 7, July 2010
Overview:
On this session Mr. Burns communicated to me his continuing nightmares/dreams in which he communicated with “himself” via a mirror. Mr. Burns described in great detail his conversations with this alternate person and seemed troubled by the questions it posed. However he also expressed relief that he was forced to see more than one side of his life. Below is a direct transcription of the dream he detailed in our most recent session.
{Philip Burns walks through the hallway in a familiar scene. He is wearing gray pajama pants and no shirt or shoes. He stops at the bathroom door and opens it. A heavy fog of steam rolls out. It gets clearer as he walks in and stands in front of the mirror. He wipes away at the fogged up mirror. Nothing is there, not even his own reflection. He leans against the wall, disappointed. He was hoping for another run in with his “better half”. Suddenly the mirror shows signs of life and the alternate Burns leans in.}
“Thought I wasn’t gonna show, huh? I thought about it. You did break the mirror last time. I live in here ya know.”
Yea, sorry about that. you’re the only one who has ever dug very deep into my mind. Our mind? I don’t know what to call this.
“Its ours, no mistaking that. I’m here every bit that you are. I watch what you do. You just happen to be in control right now.”
Why is that? When did I take control?
{Burns pulls a stool up to the mirror and sits in front of it.}
“Taking turns I guess. I don’t have much of a mean streak. But you don’t have any respect. You are the more powerful side I think. Its obvious though that together we could take on the world. Pity we have never coexisted.”
I know. I feel like it was me in PWW, but then you took over in nCw until I stepped back in.
“That’s about how I feel about it too. But I am just a small part of this puzzle. There are several of us in here behind this glass. Some of us are more like you, some more like me. We have many different faces.”
This is a little much to take in. I feel vulnerable. I don’t know myself anymore.
{Burns hangs his head, somewhat embarrassed}
“I know who you are”
{Phil looks back up into the mirror but this time his face has been replaced by Brad Kane's}
“you are a mouthy punk who cant back up his claims with anything more than a sneak attack."
{Phil is stunned to see his opponents face.}
Why are you doing this to me? I came to you for help, for comfort. And you mock me?
{The mirror changes to Angel's face.}
“Because you are weak. You are dead weight. Do you know how hard it is to carry a 250 pound man on your back for months? I do.”
Come on man, don’t be like that. We had a good thing. I thought we settled all that. We had a match and shook hands!?
{The face now belongs to Falcon}
“What about me? I didn’t even get a decent effort out of you. We couldn’t even touch the record you and Angel had. What did I do to deserve the lazy Burns? Where is he back here? I see plenty of normal versions in this damn mirror. Wheres the lazy ass I had to deal with? Oh That’s you, out there.”
Stop it!
{Burns slides down the wall and puts his hands over his head. The face changes back to his.}
Why are you doing this?
“To show you what everyone thinks of you. I know you can say all day that you don’t care but we do. You cant be an entertainer without caring. You cant be a World Champion without caring.”
I want to be world champion. Just tell me what I need to do.
“Sacrifice your ego and be yourself. Stop worrying about being the best and BE the best. Accept my help, our help.”
{Burns stands on his feet and approaches the mirror. He breathes in heavy and lets in out, trying to calm himself.}
OK. Alright.
“Get ready, things are about to change around here.”
I’m ready.
“Show time.”
{The wall opens up to reveal a bright light and Phil steps up to it. He hesitates and then walks in. Seconds later he walks back out, dressed in his wrestling attire and holding the World Heavyweight Championship in his hand.}
Analysis: Although this is just a dream it shows that Mr. Burns has a strong desire to be a better person all around. He mentioned during the session wanting to mend his relationship with his father and focus on winning the world title.
Although hints of split personalities is common in many wrestlers and professional athletes due to oversized egos, I believe that Philip is a healthy man with an active imagination. There is a lot going on in that brain of his and it all comes down to rationalizing his actions. He knows that several things he has done in his life are wrong, namely his abandonment of his father and brother after the death of his brother. Of course I must also factor in a number of recent televised interactions with Brad Kane as recent as last week.
There is progress to be made, but as the doctor in charge of his mental evaluation I deem him cleared to compete. And wish his good luck. I hope he finds what he was looking for.
{Philip Burns is walking down the sidewalk of a small neighborhood in Indiana wearing black track pants and a t-shirt. He holds a small package in his hands that is gift wrapped. He walks up to a mailbox that has “Burns” written on it in faded letters. Phil cracks a crooked smile and starts up the driveway. Suddenly a voice calls out}
“Phil is that you?”
{Philip turns around to see his old neighbor Mr. Hampton. He is much older than Phil seemed to remember, for obvious reasons. The amount of years added on to this mans life made Phil more ashamed for spending such a long time away than he already was.}
Philip Burns: Yea, Mr. Hampton. Its me.
Mr. Hampton: Wow, I haven’t seen you in about ten years!
Philip Burns: Something like that. Its been a while.
Mr. Hampton: I was just talking to your dad about you the other day! He told me you were still wrestling and fighting for the World Title soon. That’s exciting.
Philip Burns: Yeah, I sure am excited about it. Is he home?
Mr. Hampton: Oh yea, I think so. I just saw him out here trimming that peach tree earlier. The one you fell out of about twenty years back.
{Burns looks down to a scar on his arm}
Philip Burns: Yea, I remember that. Well listen, Its good to see you. I just need to talk to dad soon. I will be sure to come over before I leave.
Mr. Hampton: You do that! I would love to.
{The exchange goodbyes and Phil treks up the steps with his gift package in hand. He takes a deep breath and knocks on the door firmly three times.}
