Death [deth] - the end of life; the total and permanentcessation of all the vital functions of an organism.
The scene is set in a cemetery, where we see two men walking looking for a certain spot. It’s Charlie Velez, who’s holding flowers, and his brother Ryan following right behind him. They’re both in their casual clothes, Charlie spotting his awesome sunglasses. They finally reach their destination, saying their prayers before Charlie places the flowers next to the tombstone. Charlie stays on one knee, reading the tombstone.
“He would have been 57 today. 57…Jesus. That’s almost sixty.”
“Really math genius, I had no idea…”
“I’m just saying…that’s almost six decades old. That’s in the 50’s…you know, when the world was black and white.”
“Damn…that’s true.”
The two brothers just stand there in a few moments of silence, honoring and remembering their father. Ryan looks down at Charlie, whose eyes haven’t left the tombstone.
“So you heard about mom, right?”
Charlie slightly turns his head and nods, not wanting to acknowledge what Ryan is talking about.
“It’s going to be a rough couple of months, but I mean…we still have each other man. We have to stick together for this, not like we did when dad died.”
“What makes this any different Ryan; why should I really face the truth…?”
Charlie lowers his head, remembering all the thoughts he had a little more than two years ago. It was a tough time for the former National Champion, who is in the process of going through it all again. His brother Ryan puts his hand on Charlie’s shoulder.
“Charlie, I mean…you knew we had to face this reality sooner rather than later, right? I mean she’s been sick for a while now, it was inevitable for her to be in the final stages of life.”
“You sound like one of those snot nosed doctors who doesn’t care about the patients just their big pay checks.”
“What’s your problem, man?”
Charlie begins to look away from his younger brother, but Ryan squats down next to him. Charlie takes a deep breath, before finally letting it all out.
“They’re being taken too soon from us, Ryan. We never did the things that they wanted us to do…we were never good enough for them. And now they’re being taken away before we can prove ourselves to them? That’s unfair Ryan….why, why out of all the people in the world it has to be us?”
“Do you really think that, Charlie? That, well, they’re not proud of us or something?”
“Dad was never proud of us…everything we did he’d always tell us we could do better. I got A’s Ryan…he wanted more. I made a huge company making billions of dollars…he was never impressed, never happy with that.”
Charlie hides his face in his hand, remembering all of the nasty things that he tried so hard to push out of his mind. Ryan just shakes his head, not believing what he’s hearing.
“Do you really believe that Charlie? Yeah, dad was a hardass…but do you really think he was never proud of us? Dad loved us; it was just…well, just his way of showing it. He’s just like every other father; they want more for their kids. That doesn’t mean they’re not proud of them. Charlie, dad loved us no matter what we did. When you went missing for half a year dad went crazy looking for you.”
Charlie finally shows his face behind his hand, slightly turning towards his brother.
“I mean, yeah it’s going to suck when mom finally goes…but we have to accept it now. Death…it’s a natural part of life. We live, and then we die. It’s harsh and cruel to put it like that, but it’s true and that’s the only way I can tell you. I don’t want these next few weeks to be agony for us Charlie. We’re brothers; we have to stick it out, for better or worse.”
Charlie Velez doesn’t give a verbal response to his brother; instead he just pats Ryan on his back nodding his head. This would be a moment where you hug your brother, but come on…they’re grown men.
He wipes a tear from his eye, and closes them before thinking of everything he’s been through the past couple of months. The constant struggle of becoming the man he thought people wanted him to be, never thinking about the man he should be.
I thought Charlie was the older brother? Who knew that all it took was his younger brother to tell him the deal. But alas, that is the case; Charlie Velez is no longer haunted by the fear of wanting more. He is content with life…
And the death that comes with it.
“Everything that has a beginning…has an end. It’s not an exact science; hell, if anything its common sense. Just like what goes up must come down, everybody knows it. It’s not like I’m spitting a gospel here, putting new thoughts in the mind of the viewers.
But it’s a good way to set the mood, isn’t it?
This whole feud between the Front Office and the Revolution, it’s coming to an end. It started many months ago, when Steve Awesome and Leonard Fox called the Young Guns one night, asking us to join us in his fight against the Adam Knite. We were promised anything we wanted; while that wasn’t necessarily true and we fought for what we wanted, at the time it was an offer we couldn’t refuse. Still being relatively new to the company, an opportunity to climb to the top was something I needed. Then it all started to unravel. Brad Kane and Andrew Jacobsen decided to start a little group, and that little group turned into Adam Knite’s team to face against the Front Office.
Don’t tell me you guys don’t have a leader, its obvious what happened here. The little Andrew Jacobsen got shoved to the side for the big Falcon and Adam Knite, while Brad Kane sat in the corner telling people anybody who wanted to listen about his male genitalia. Then I started questioning who were the true bad guys; was it us, the Front Office/Young Guns, the guys who would come and beat you guys up every week, or was it the Revolution, the guys who opposed the rules that the owner of this company has set? I never got a real answer to that question; people pussyfooted around it, never really acknowledging their true roles in all of this. Then once Adam got Kelly back…well, he just forgot about us. Thought he was too big for us again, had bigger things to deal with and isn’t even involved in this match anymore. The months he spent with his ‘Revolution’ fighting us were for nothing apparently; even admitting that he doesn’t care, while he leaves other men to finish the battle. Andrew Jacobsen said the Front Office is bickering at one another…
At least we never abandoned our men.
And I know, you’re going to point out that Doc decided to step away, but he’s still a Young Gun, and I’m still part of the Front Office. By extension he never left, he just has other priorities on his mind. The whole point I’m trying to make is this; the Revolution stood against all the ‘unfair’ things that Leonard Fox set…until people got what they wanted. Then they just decided to forget about all that, leaving unfinished business on the table. It’s a shame really. We’re the bad guys…
But we finish what we started.
Yes Andrew, this is getting a little tiring. Not saying you’re not a good in ring talent; hell son every time we get in the ring together we tear the house down, it’s just that I’m tired of kicking that pretty face of yours in every chance I get. Swapping victories…yeah, alright I guess we can kind of say that. I mean, I’ll put that feather in your hat if it makes you feel better. There was no handpicking when Mr. Fox decided to put me by his side; hell, I had won the National Championship and was on my way to one of the greatest reigns ever, he saw the potential so he gave me the chance to shine. The outnumbering people thing…well, that’s just the nature of the beast my friend. You’re a little too young to know that, never really gone through the gauntlet like I have. I’d rather be teamed up with somebody with power than with somebody fighting against it.
No Andrew, it wasn’t because everybody developed a problem that you couldn’t end this ‘Reign’; people just stopped caring. You recruited men who only stood for themselves, not for the morals that you do. Like I said, we’re the bad guys? We’ve always fought for what we believed in, and to this day we still stand for them. The people you had behind you never really cared like you did, and they took the spotlight away from you. Sucks, doesn’t it? Your little Revolution turned into somebody else’s platform to get what they wanted. Shame, really, this was your shining moment to get out of your shell and become the Andrew Jacobsen we all expect you to be.
Instead you got pushed to the side, rejected by the girl you like, and just got thrown into this match because certain people have ‘bigger’ issues to deal with. Sucks for you.
Brad Kane…what else is there to be said? You even admit you don’t have that fire anymore, you’re no longer the man that won the World Championship not too long ago. Did I really knock the wind out of you man, or was all that talk about how you were going to kick my head in just talk? That reckless…ruthless aggression, was it really just mask to cover the true you? Weak, not the man fit to lead this revolution? For somebody with such ‘legendary’ status like yourself, well…you’re not so intimidating. Maybe you should just take your big check, sit at home with your wife and kids, and call it a good day. Your time was here, and you did some magnificent things with that time…but just like gravity you came back to Earth.
So stop playing over your head, or I’ll make you retire completely.
Then there’s Falcon…heh. You know what I love about Falcon promos? They’re so, they’re so interesting to digest. When he says something, it takes me a while to remember what he’s talking about, and when I do I just smile because that means I really got to him. ‘Maybe’ I can carry this company…cute. Have you been paying attention to things Falcon? I AM carrying this damn company into tomorrow. No ‘maybes’; I’ve been putting this company on my back and filling the role of the dominant star in this company. I don’t need a World Championship for people to understand how *** damn good I am; you know this already, Andrew Jacobsen knows it, Brad Kane knows it. They know I’m too good, hell, look at the Power Rankings, I’m next in line for a World title shot. There’s no ‘maybes’ with me Falcon…
There’s only guarantees.
I guarantee that this Sunday at Battlegrounds I will be walking out the winner. This might be ‘your match’ Falcon, but you know what? Your match is taking place in my world, a world that I I’ve dominated since I stepped foot inside of it. I’ve won multiple titles from ‘federations that fizzled out’ and I had the most impressive title run this year. I’ve made believers out of haters, I have Kelly Knite writing articles about how good I really am. To question that I’m MIGHT be the future of this company is stupid Falcon, it’s dumb…it’s really, really, dumb, for real. I am this company; you know it, the fans know it, and people above us know it. You say you can walk into any room and ask for a belt if you wanted to…
I don’t even have to ask.
You obviously don’t respect me, or you would acknowledge the great things I’ve done.
It’s alright, I don’t respect you either.
You might have ‘ruled’ the Warfare match…
But I was never around, and trust me, I’m better than anybody you ever fought before.
Will…there’s not much to say, you had your shot to be us and you blew it, and now you’ll pay the consequences.
This Revolution…it’s coming to an end. Just like I said, everything that has a beginning has an end. But it’s going to be the most painful ending either of you will ever feel. Maybe the pain will make you realize that we were right all along…and if it does
Thank Us Later.”
The pain has gone away for now, and he doesn’t know when it’s ever going to come back…but right now he has more important things on his mind.
He watches in his mother’s house; the house he grew up in, his wife, two kids, his brother, and his mom sitting at the dining room table talking about the nonsense of the day.
All he can do is watch, not because he’s not allowed in, just because this is the best picture he can have in his mind.
For Charlie Velez, all he wanted is to have the best of everything. What he didn’t really know is that he always had it; a brother who will have his back, a mother who will always love him, two children who will grow up and respect their dad…
And a woman to complete him.
He might always think that his father was never satisfied, but if there was ever a little glimmer of hope to think otherwise, that’s good enough for Charlie Velez.
So while he watches his family…so good to say that…while he watches his family live on with their lives, he knows that there are things to do. He needs to fix the relationship with his wife, build it back to what it once was, and he needs say his final goodbyes to his mother.
Life is never about the destination, it’s all about the journey.
The signs are dead.
A new Charlie Velez is born.
The Verve – “Bittersweet Symphony”
“Well I’ve never prayed but tonight I’m on my knees, yeah…
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah…
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now…
But the airwaves are clean and there’s nobody singing to me now…”
