Genesis was last Sunday. Survivor Series was last night. Both shows were very, very good, I'd give slight edge to Genesis.
Why?
Due to the hype that EVERY match seems to get with a TNA ppv, rather than two or three for an eight match WWE PPV. You'd think with more television time that WWE could properly promote an eight match PPV. And Survivor Series being one of the big ones.
The best parts on TNA Genesis
-Booker T
- Christian Cage vs. Kaz
- Robert Roode (I'm a mark)
- The Motor City Machine Guns vs. Team 3D
-AJ/Tomko vs. The Steiners (No, really.)
The best parts of Survivor Series
-Edge is back (Dunno why he helped Batista, but none the less)
- Randy Orton + Shawn Michaels = Good matches.
-Mickie James kissed Melina.
Really that's about it.
But, the real story this week, My top 10 best matches. Ever. And I'll tell you why they make the list.
#10: "Macho Man" Randy Savage vs. The Ultimate Warrior (Wrestlemania 7)
- Now, I know, the words "Ultimate Warrior" and "Greatest Wrestling Matches" shouldn't really go together. But bare with me. This match wasn't even about the Warrior, it was about Savage. Savage mapped this match out showing his great skill at match mapping. He did the same with Hogan, and everybody else he wrestled in the late '80's - early '90's. He made the Warrior look like a million bucks (Remember when Savage jumped off the top rope and hit FIVE elbow drops, and the warrior KICKED OUT?! Who didn't mark out?) And planed a little bit for himself. (Elizibeth re-united with him.) The match was almost flawless.
#9: Rob Van Dam vs. Jerry Lynn (Living Dangerously '99)
- On WWE's RVD DVD, the Hardcore Heaven re-match is the one most famously shown (Where Jerry Lynn FACE-PLANTED into the concrete floor) But THIS match showcased their skill at full potential. Lynn and Van Dam put on a wrestling clinic and spotfest. Spot-fest haters will jeer this match, but the actual wrestling is superb, and the spots rarely involve weapons. at the 20 minute mark, the referee was acutally going to award the TV title to Jerry Lynn (That would have been a very controversial desicision) But Bill Alfonso got 5 more minutes and RVD got the duke.
#8: Bret "Hitman" Hart vs. Mr. Perfect (Summerslam '91)
- C'mon, this match MADE Bret Hart. Mr. Perfect made Hart in this match, even though he was injured. (This is Perfect's last PPV match as a wrestler until the 1992 Survivor Series) Mr. Perfect did everything right that he could, and Bret was obviously still learning at this point. Bret has the fan support, and the skill to match Perfect. Perfect's skill and overall luck were playing in his favor, but Hart won the day.
#7: Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit (Royal Rumble 2003)- Steiner and HHH just loused everything up with their s**tty match beforehand. Angle and Benoit tore the house down. The Suplex spots, and the constant submission counters make this a classic match, I wish that if WWE makes another Benoit DVD that this match is one it. I showed this match to a guy who wasn't a fan and it made him one. It's that good.
#6: Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania 21)- Holy crap, a pretty current match! These two put on the match of the night because everyone knew they would. Kurt Angle is so awesome at the angle's and interviews and promo's that you want to watch the match in order to complete the story. Shawn has already proven his greatness, but this match amplifed it.
#5: Dean Malenko vs. Eddie Guerrero (ECW Harcore TV, 1995)
- I was pretty pissed off at WWE at this point and WCW didn't have my attention, then I saw this match when it happened (or whenever it played on TV) and I was blown away, I didn't see WWE guys having this good of match (Except for Bret and Owen) and WCW had guys like "The Shockmaster"... 'nuff said.
#4: "Macho Man" Randy Savage vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat (Wrestlemania 3)- This match made everybody a wrestling fan at that time, if you were a casual fan that was drawn by the appeal of Hogan/Andre, you became a fan because of this match. Again I'm pretty sure Savage mapped this match out as well. Just shows you how underrated Savage really is. We really don't mention him as a greatest canidate but his behind-the-match talent is phenominal. It's made even easier by the fact that Steamboat is so good.
#3:Ric Flair vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat (Chi-Town Rumble '89)
- This match can be found on the "Greatest Wrestling Stars on the 1980's DVD. It's classic Flair and Steamboat. their chemistry is so good, they could wrestle blindfolded. At 50% this match is better than 90% of the current WWE roster. Of the three "Big Time" matches they had, this is the 2nd best. and they says a lot.
#2: "Bret Hitman" Hart vs. Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania 12)
- For the longest time WWE title matches couldn't go past 30 mintues. It may have seemed too long, I don't think I could have put up with Vince McMahon saying "What a manuver" 50 times in one match. 20 was the limit. This match broke that barrier, solidified Bret Hart's greatness, and put Shawn Michaels into orbit as a star. Too bad HBK didn't want to do it all over again the next year.
#1 Ric Flair vs. Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat (Wrestle War '89)
The match that many called the greatest wrestling match of all time...IS. Nobody could do this type of match again. It's often imitated, but can never be duplicated. They made simple holds like Suplexes and chinlocks look painful. They slams and backbreakers look career-ending. They wrestled ....the perfect match. (Not that every match Curt Hennig ever had wasn't Perfect. but I digress.)
Honorable Mentions:
- Bret "Hitman" Hart vs. "The Rocket" Owen Hart (Wrestlemania 10)
- Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho (Wrestlemania 19)
- Rob Van Dam vs. Lance Storm (Heatwave '99)
- AJ Styles vs. Christopher Daniels (TNA Against All Odds 2005)
I guess I should make like top 20... nah, that's my story.
Next Update: ... Greatest Wrestlemania's of all time (in order from worst to first.) Possibly more subjects...
So, until next time
