“I had such high hopes for you Xavior.”
Steve Awesome stared into his handi-cam with a look of shear disgust. And he was good at it too. He’s been disgusted with things all his life. Homeless people, Snooki, Andrew Jacobsen Promos, Jim Belushi, people that he’s better than….the list goes on and on. So he’s an expert at looking down on you. He’s so good, the last person he used this look on totally committed suicide!
Sorry Rob.
But now, he was using it to look at his friend Xavior Cross.
“We all did. The fans, the company, me, your children, your wife…….we all thought you were going to become this shining example of the amalgamation of the talent, the charisma that we all thought you had. We all thought you were going to be that guy who could carry us into the years to come because lord knows that my back is bound to get tired eventually. I thought that you were actually an equal. Somebody I could trust, somebody that would actually have my back in this cut throat world we call the wrestling business. I thought I had a friend in Xavior Cross. But I was wrong.”
He lowers his head and slowly shakes it.
“We all were.”
“Instead of becoming something great X, you became the new Joe Everyman.”
Steve picks his head up, a hint of shock present on his face.
“Say it ain’t so, Cross. The new friggen Joe Everyman?….I don’t know what’s sadder, the fact that it’s you or the fact that the original Joe Everyman has actually gone up a notch. I hate that I have to say this about a person that I used to respect. I hate that I have to look at Leonard Fox and say, “wow….I guess I was wrong about Xavior.”….but look at you….I don’t think you’ve won a match in months. I know the win loss record doesn’t mean much of anything in this day and age but I don’t think you even tried. That spark everyone thought you had has vanished. You have single handedly killed your career because of your apathy. You should have took your career and buried it alongside Cari that night because it’s dead, just like her.”
He stares at the camera. In his head it was actually Xavior he was looking at.
“You’re a let down Cross.”
He shakes his head in utter shame.
“That’s all there is too it. You’re a let down. A disappointment. As a wrestler. A friend. A father and a husband. And the worst part about it, is I think your actually aware of that. I believe somewhere in that big head of yours you know how big of a piece of **** you are but you just can’t bring yourself to admit it or accept it. But don’t worry X, I’m here to help you. This Sunday is going to be some grade A therapy for you old buddy old pal. I’m going to make you realize how far you’ve slipped. I’m going to make you see for yourself that you should have went home along time ago…..”
…..and staid there.”
He shakes his head.
“But you didn’t stay home. No of course not. You had to hold onto whatever it is you thought you had in this company until your knuckles turned white. You had to continue to run your career into the ground by sticking around. You had to burn, what was pretty much, the last bridge you had left in this company by dropping me on my head at Ascension. And for what? You know, I still haven’t gotten an actual explanation out of you buddy. I had to here it from someone else…..because you wanted me to do the right thing? Because I was going to do something horrible to Adam Knite and you had to stop me? Oh Xavior…..tell me something…..what do you know about “the right things”? Huh? You can’t even manage your own life, let alone mine. You expect me to take life lessons from a slacker with a baseball bat? Oh there we go, that’s how I want to live my life. Barely trying, never achieving, becoming a joke to the world……but hey…at least I’d know what the right thing is…..right?”
Steve chuckles as he shakes his head.
“What a joke. And the punch line is….you still want to be my friend after all of this. You think I’m just going to forget the fact that you cost me not one, but perhaps two of the biggest matches of the year? That you not only assaulted me live on pay per view, but almost re-broke my shoulder, and embarrassed me in front of Leonard Fox and the whole world? You think after we rip each other into shreds inside this steel cage this Sunday that I’m going to let everything that’s happened over the past few months just wash over and you and I will go back to the way it was? If you think that Xavior…..then your dumber then I thought.”
“I’m pissed, X. I’m angry. I want to tear you apart. I want you to fully realize the error of your ways. You thought what I was willing to do to Adam Knite to prove a point was horrible? Just wait until they lock us inside that cage. Just wait until it’s me and you…all to ourselves. I’m going to take what’s left of your career and crush it Xavior. I’m going to plant it firmly under six feet of dirt. I’m going to bury you X! Figuratively….and if they give me the chance…..literally. And I’m going to enjoy every minute of it.”
He flashes that cocky smirk and chuckles to himself.
“What are friends for?”
Deuces.
We open up at a nearby gym somewhere in Las Vegas. It’s a pretty classy gym, if a gym could actually be classy. Something about sweaty people doesn’t ever scream high class to me. But you know it has to have something going for it if were going to see Steve Awesome inside of it. In fact, there’s our hero now, walking up to a nearby towel rack and wiping his brow with the white cloth.
“Oh man….that was a great training session!”
That voice belongs to Jayson Matthews. The younger brother to a past girlfriend and a guy Steve had been training and helping throughout most of Jaysons career. Awesome doesn’t really respond to Jayson’s excitement, instead he just sits calmly on a nearby bench.
“Man, I was so close to beating you too.”
Steve smiles and pats Jayson on the back.
“Don’t feel bad bro, most people can’t even get that far. Now come on, lets get out of here.”
Awesome gets up from his seat and before he even makes it two steps forward he barely dodges a running female heading straight forward.
“HEY!”
Steve yells, damn near knocking down a weight set. He looks up at the girl and glares.
“You really need to watch where you’re…..”
Something about her makes him stop.
“Do I know you from somewhere?”
The female puts her hands on her hips.
“I should hope so. I helped you to lure Xavior Cross out of pending retirement for your little match this Sunday. I’m his ex…..uh…trainee.”
That rings a bell.
“Oh right. Your name is uh….um….Nat…..”
“-alie.”
Steve snaps his fingers.
“Natalie! Right! I totally knew that.”
Steve gives her the once over with his eyes. She was wearing a pair of tight sweats and a pink tank top with a skull and a bow on it. She looked pretty sexy in her gym clothes.
“So what brings you to this fine establishment?”
Steve takes a seat back on the bench and then pats the space next to him and motions for Natalie to sit down next to him and she does.
“Well, I thought you were going to start training me now. We had talked about it before and when I went to meet you at your place, Mandi told me you already left.”
“Oh you were serious about that?”
Steve smiles an almost sheepish grin.
“I just figured you were….you know…trying to get into my pants.”
“Last time we hung out, you weren’t even wearing pants.”
Awesome pats her on the back.
“It’s a figure of speech sweet heart.”
“Well I was serious. I really want to get in the ring. I want to start my career. Will you train me?”
Steve shakes his head.
“Nah….I don’t train people.”
Her eyebrows slant and she points over at Jayson.
“What about him? What’s he doing here?”
Jayson notices her pointing and he walks over.
“Steve is helping me train. He’s a good trainer.”
Awesome instantly face palms as Jayson smiles at him in that “…and I helped…” sort of way.
“Why don’t you want to train me?”
Awesome shrugs his shoulders.
“It’s not so much that I don’t want to train you its just that……well…..okay…it just don’t want to train you. Being me is a very busy career path. I’m only training him because I used to bang his sister. I just don’t have the time.”
Awesome thought that was a reasonable explanation. That’s why he was surprised when the water works started flowing.
“Please? Xavior won’t return my calls. My dad is too far up Leonard Fox’s butt to care about what I’m doing. Nobody else on the roster even knows I exist.”
Her eyes were like pools of anxiety.
“I don’t want to go back to my dad’s mansion. I want to be on my own, in nCw, as a professional wrestler. And you Steve Awesome, are the only person who could help.”
She grabbed his hand and looked at him.
“…..please?”
At that moment, Steve changed his mind. It wasn’t because he felt sorry for her either. As soon as he looked into her eyes he knew he had to do it. He could sense something in those baby blues that always seems to turn him into a shark that tastes blood.
“Sure….”
He said with a smile on his face that the diehard fans have come to notice as the fake one.
“…I’ll do it.”
He could sense how vulnerable she was. And with a guy like Steve nearby…..that’s a very dangerous thing to be.
Fade.
