Christmas time in the Velez Household is always a treat. The children often get what they want, and the adults usually get some great presents. Nobody is ever really surprised by what they get; they’re more fortunate that they’re able to get these things.
“Here, this is for you.”
Annette Velez, the love of his wife, hands over a box. It’s a long box; what’s in it? A watch? A bracelet? A chain to wear? Charlie slowly opens the box, revealing two tickets. It’s to a showing of the story ‘Man of La Mancha’, the story of Don Quixote, a mad, aging nobleman who embarrasses his respectable family by his adventures. Backed by his faithful sidekick Sancho Panza, he duels windmills and defends his perfect lady, Dulcinea. Charlie just stares at the tickets, a smile on his face.
“I couldn’t think of anything else; I just remember you kept talking about how your dad loved the theater, so I just came across this…I hope you like it.”
Charlie lifts his head up, a smile on his face. He mouths the words ‘thank you’, before leaning over and kissing his wife. He sits and stares at the tickets, a smile on his face. ‘A story of a man who embarrasses his respectable family by his adventures?’ It sounds too familiar.
Sounds just like him.
“So this is the road we decided to take…
The road that is only going to lead us to pain, misery, and well…disappointment. This is the road we decided to take, Dave. A road of fear, a road of failure, a road where only one of us will walk out World Champion…
And the other one will walk out disappointed, not sure what to do next with their career.
Dave Holland, I’m going to be blunt with you.
The odds are stacked against me.
I don’t know if I’m ever going to have another chance at that World Heavyweight Championship, if I can stumble by and get that title shot that I wanted so bad. I don’t know Dave; this could be it for me. The end of the road…
…the road you chose.
You picked this road when you aligned yourself with people like Angel, like Falcon, like Alex Jones…when you sided with them Dave, you made this road. Siding with people like them, people who only care about themselves but pose as doing the ‘right’ thing. So they throw themselves into our match, decided the fate of the World Heavyweight Champion. These are the people you call friends Dave, but really look at them and think. Are they the people who you want to align yourself with? Do you want to be friends with somebody like Falcon, who punches women on television and thinks that it’s the right thing to do? Do you want people like Alex Jones to be your supporting cast, a man who screams and shouts and when he finally is given the opportunity…disappears?
Do you want to be friends with Angel, who tries to be fair and equal but shows a clear bias?
Dave Holland, you’re the nCw World Heavyweight Champion. You’re supposed to be a man of honor, a man who stands above the rest and shows the fans how a real wrestler is supposed to be.
But you’re worse than I am. You see, I align myself with family, people I know will always have my back. People like Venom who I know will be by my side, and who will ride with me until I die. People like Zelda, who is honest and willing to step in front of harm’s way for a friend. People like Jason Blair, who is hungry, and willing to learn from people like me. I don’t align myself with people like you do…
Because I’m a man of honor.”
They sit in the balcony, over the crowd below them. They’re surrounded by other rich, snobby, people. The show has yet to begin; people are still arriving to their seats.
“You know, this is the first time that they’ve performed this show here in Chicago. Very hard to find tickets.”
Charlie just turns his head to Annette, staring right at here.
“I know, you’ve told me this before.”
He smiles, holding her hand after saying it. She moves in closer, a face of concern.
“I know it’s just that I wasn’t sure what to get you Charlie. I just really hope that you enjoy the show…”
He just sits there, thinking to himself. Thinking about what kind of husband he would be if he told her that sitting for two hours, watching people perform wasn’t his ideal Christmas present.
But then again…what is the most ideal present for Charlie Velez, the man who has everything? He couldn’t tell her what he really wanted…she can’t get that for him. It’s something he must get himself.
“Listen, I-“
But the lights turn off before he can finish his sentence. The crowd roars in approval, as the curtains slowly open, and the show is about to begin.
Charlie sits there, not really watching what is going on, just staring, thinking.
“I’ve always been standup in everything I do.
Have I ever lied to you before?
Have I ever bent the truth, just to make myself look better then I really am?
I have always come out to the ring, each and every week, and I’ve been a man of my word. When I say that I’m going to do something, I do it; I don’t tippy toe around it and continue to lie to everybody in the arena. When I say I’m going to do it…
I make sure that it gets done.
I vowed months ago not to let this feud between us end until I won that World Heavyweight Championship. I’m still here, I’m still breathing, Dave. You can get Angel to throw his power at me, to put me in unfair matches and to put me in unfair predicaments, but you know what? I will stand strong, I will prove not just to you, but to the world that Charlie Velez is in fact the greatest wrestler this company has to offer.
I’ve worked too hard to fail at this point Dave. I know you’re going to give me the sob story about how you came from nothing to get to this point, about how the fans need you to be the World Champion. That’s the same thing you went off last time, trying to get me to feel somewhat sympathetic for you. But you have to look at it Dave, you’re no longer the underdog. You’re not the one who has a man who vowed to take him down playing special guest referee, you’re not the one with two loses to his record.
You see Dave Holland, I’ve been kicked down this road before, and I only have one way to go. The mountain that I’ve climbed to get to this point has a few more steps to go, a few more layers until I finally reach heaven.
I’m on top, and only heaven is right above me.
I want to go to heaven, Dave. The only heaven for me is that world Championship, I want it Dave…I need it more than you do.
Without that championship I’m nothing.
But with it…I’m complete.”
Don Quixote stands there, thinking of how to answer Aldonza’s question. The question posed to him; why is he following this ‘quest’ of his? The quest that has done nothing but lead to embarrassment, nothing but pain and suffering and shame to the family.
Charlie sits there, his elbow resting on the arm, holding up his head. He just watches, not fazed by what is going on. He would prefer to be home, training for his big match.
But suddenly, the musical number hits.
“To dream the impossible dream…
To fight the unbeatable foe…”
Charlie lifts his head up, the last line earning his interest. He leans forward, trying to understand everything that is being said.
“To bear the unbearable sorrow…
To run where the brave dare not go…”
The music is speaking to him; Don Quixote, the mad nobleman who has fought to defend his perfect lady is much like Charlie Velez. Not just the way the two stands for what they believe in…but because of how far they will go.
“To right the unrightable wrong...
to love pure and chased from a far...
To try when your arms are too weary...
To reach the unreachable Star...”
Charlie wants that star, but it seems like every time he reaches it begins to fade away. But he keeps fighting, because he knows that it will be his one day. He sits there, his eyes glued to the scene in front of him. The music is talking to him.
“This is my quest, to follow that Star...
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far...
To fight for the right, without question or pause...”
This is Charlie Velez’s journey, his odyssey. This is what he’s been fighting his whole career for, to look for the meaning of his life he just has to look at his wrestling career. It’s never been about the money, the fame, or the glory…it’s about the World Heavyweight Championship.
“To be willing to march into Hell for a Heavenly cause...
And I know if I'll only be true to this glorious quest...
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I'm laid to my rest...”
He’s gone through hell to get a taste of heaven. He’s hurt people who never wanted to hurt, and he’s seen people burn and dies away, even though he needed them. He wouldn’t give it up for the world though.
“And the world will be better for this,
That one man scorned and covered with scars...
Still strove with his last ounce of courage...
To fight the unbeatable foe...
To reach the unreachable Star...”
The last words vibrate through his body. He stands up before anybody else in the theatre, applauding the performance that just occurred. IT spoke to him, it told him everything he needed to know.
He must reach the unreachable star.
“This is my dream, Dave Holland. This is what I worked my whole career for, everything that happened up to this point was made for this moment.
Everything I’m not made me everything I am.
And all I am is a man who wants to be known and remembered as the best. I can’t accomplish that until I beat you Dave, and at Time to Riot I have the odds stacked against me. I’m not afraid of a challenge, I’ve never been afraid. I walked up to Angel and told him how I felt about Falcon, right after I fell of that Death Cage I got back up and accepted the challenge he threw out. I’m not afraid of anything, Dave Holland.
You’re the monster that haunts my dreams. The dragon that won’t let me save the princess, the dragon I must slay…to finally save the world. I’m not trying to be the savior of the nCw…
But I’m going to be the closest thing possible.
Dave Holland, at Time to Riot we’ll be surrounded by our friends and foes. You’ll have a friend as the special guest referee…but that’s just the secondary story. That’s just the sidebar to what’s really going on. In the first nCw event of the year, we’re going to tear the house down. We’re going to make everything that follows us look weak, poor in comparison. I’m going to give you more then I have in my body to win this match Dave, I will achieve my impossible dream. I will reach the unreachable star.
I will accomplish the impossible.
I will become World Heavyweight Champion, and I’ll make everybody who doubted me look stupid. Because let’s be honest, when I win, what excuse will you guys have left? What else can you all say that can discredit me? Nothing, nada…
This is my time.
It’s just time for you guys to realize it.
Thank Me Later.”
They’re both lying in bed, Charlie Velez still in the awe from before. He has a smile on his face.
He knows what he must do, and he knows that it won’t be easy.
He must go through hell once again to reach heaven.
He must fight the unbeatable foe.
He must reach the unreachable star.
He must dream the impossible dream.
And become the World Heavyweight Champion he believes he should be.
“Here, this is for you.”
