Gabriel, we could argue semantics all day long if you like, but honestly, I have better things to do.
You heard what you thought you heard because that's what you wanted to hear.
You need to think of me as just another opponent.
Just another man in a mask.
You NEED to believe that there is nothing special about me so the fear that is about to overwhelm your very being stays at bay.
I understand Priest.
Not everyone has the testicular fortitude to face their fears.
But know this priest. I am not all your other opponents. I made no claims on the existence of a God, only that the God I've read about would never commend you for your actions.
You wage a holy war?
For who?
Your God has never sent a holy soldier till now, so because you say he sent you I am just supposed to believe you? I'm supposed to have faith, in you? You? The man who blinded a young girl for no reason? You, who turned on your friend Tempestad simply because he tried to keep his family together? I'm supposed to have faith that your war on the men and women of nCw is a holy one simply because the words came from your mouth?
YOUR A MAN.
YOUR A LIER.
I chose not to believe you because I know MY God. I know HIS word. I know how he gets things done, and they are not at the tip of the blade. My God, the one over seventy five percent of this world believes in, would never stoop so low as to command one of his soldiers to steel away another man's pregnant girl friend, brain wash her best friend, then pray for her to kill the infant inside.
I know who you think you are, who you think you serve, but trust me Father...
By ending you...
I will be doing the world a favor.
I will be doing God's work.

{ The scene opens outside of the church where Gabriel Karras gives all his sermons. A crowd of people is gathered before the front door, shivering together in this cold weather. The street lights are on providing some illumination on the scene. A sign stands before the church reading. }
"Special New Years Eve Sermon Tonight at 9:00"
{ The crowd begins to murmur as the minutes turn into seconds. The double doors to the church swing open and Desiree comes walking out wearing a tight black leather skirt and top leaving so very little to one's filthy imagination. The crowd gasps at the sight of her, as the last time they saw her she was dressed as a nun and blinded by a psycho priest. She smiles warmly at the crowd before speaking. }
"Come, the sermon is about to begin."
{ The crowd just seems to nod, not wanting to ask any questions out loud, but quietly discussing among themselves. They follow her inside, she makes her way up to the front of the church, to where someone is sitting in Gabriel's personal throne before the alter. The crowd takes their seats, not noticing the man at the head of the church. As they sit, he slowly stands. Chris Diamond walks to the alter and looks out before the crowd. He has a smile on his face. }
"Good evening, and thank you for coming. I know this is unusual and I know, I am not Gabriel Karras. But I felt it was my duty to come before you today, a changed man, a saved man, and speak to you as a man."
{ His smile melts into a cocky smirk. Desire sits on one of the arms of the throne behind him. }
"I have watched for so long as all of you have come here to worship in the house the Lord under the tutelage of his would be holy servant, Gabriel Karras."
{ The crowd does not remain silent after Chris' slight against their Priest. }
"You have sat with a blind eye and a deaf ear and ignored everything he has done, everything he has ever said outside of this church. You have convinced yourselves that simply because he has the 'title' of 'Father' Karras his knowledge and understanding of the word of the Lord is so much superior to your own. Tell me then, where in the Bible does God teach to blind the unfaithful?"
{ They begin to quiet down. }
"Where does it say to take preemptive action against those who you think would do you harm?"
{ Their silence deepens. }
"Answer me this, how many times has God sent a soldier to strike down the sinners?"
{ Someone finally speaks up, a man in the front row. }
"What about Sodom and Gamorrah?"
{ Chris smiles and leans forward on the alter. }
"Did the Lord send a Gabriel Karras to punish those who lived in the two cities, or did he strike down those cities himself?"
{ The man thinks about it and slowly begins to sit down as he remembers how the story went. }
"God does not use men to do his bidding. God does not send down warriors to punish the would be evil doers. God does not hide behind a psychotic priest and his cult! If God wants something done, if God sees somewhere where he must intervene, if God thinks his hand could be of use, THEN GOD DOES IT HIMSELF!"
{ The silence ends and the entire building explodes with discussion and arguments. }
"Jesus Christ was not a man sent down to bring pain and heartache to the lives of the people of Jerusalem, Jesus Christ came with a message of peace and love. He literally turned the other cheek when the Romans, when his own Apostle nailed him to the cross and sentenced him to death. What Gabriel Karras does, what he thinks is his holy mission sent down to him by God, is nothing more than his EXCUSE to do what it is he loves to do."
{ Chris looks from side to side and cracks that self serving grin again. }
"Control people."
{ The realization begins to dawn on some of them and again the arguments fade away into quiet contemplation. }
"Through threats, through violence, through fear of pain, Gabriel has spread his message of dominance and subservience. He has made all of you into his proverbial sheep, following him blindly into the fires of hell. It is not with the Lord he converses but with the Devil. And now, so do you too converse with the Devil when you speak to him, when you do his bidding, when you ignore the unjust nature of his creed on national television on a weekly basis."
{ Chris looks down for a moment. }
"I ask you people, tell me what I did to him to deserve to have my family destroyed? Look at me, I come before you as a man, as Chris Diamond, not as Maniac, not as the monster I portray on Television. I come here today as a man to tell you that there are things worse than monsters, worse than demons, worse than crazies with an army. Whats worse? Religion in the wrong hands. I tell you here and now that I did nothing, NOTHING! To deserve what I got. It was not Gabriel's place to punish me. It was not his place to pass judgment on my actions. I will pay for the things I've done in the after life, but GOD, not some babbling moron, will be the one who makes me pay. I am ready for that."
{ He looks up again. }
"I came here today to ask you not to do as you have done. Do not sit back anymore and just be his sheep. Do not watch as he punishes. Do not believe his lies. Look back on all he's done and ask yourselves 'is this something God is truly capable of?' I know the answer will be 'no.' You are all good people, you all have good hearts, you've just put your faith in the wrong man. Now please, go, and spread the true word of God."
"Peace."
{ Chris steps back and makes the sign of the cross. The people in the church all quietly stand, unsure of what to make of the man before them, but positive that his words ring true. They slowly file their way out of the church and after only a minute or two it is just Chris Diamond and Desiree. Desiree hops out of the throne and walks up to Chris, wrapping herself around his midsection. }
"What do we do now?"
{ He smiles as Homeless Harold steps out from the rectory to the right of Chris Diamond, holding a gas can in either hand. }
"Burn the ****er down."
{ Desiree squeals with delight and runs over to Harold, taking one of the cans as Chris reaches down behind the alter and pulls out his mask. With great pride he slides it on over his head and begins to make his way outside. Maniac stops on the steps of the church as the first flames begin to light inside. }
"You took from me."
"You threatened me."
"You misunderstand me."
"I'm not just trying to win a match."
"Gain an accolade."
"I'm literally going to destroy you."
"So argue with me."
"Continue this little battle of 'he said, he said, nuh uhh' all day long."
"We already know the outcome of this match Father, and it is not you standing victorious over the body of a monster."
"It will be you, alone in the ground, with nothing but your thoughts, sins and a few minutes of oxygen to keep you company."
"You say there are no monsters, that you see only a man..."
"What is faith unless it is to believe what you do not see?"
"Monsters are real."
"I'll show you."
{ Maniac walks down the rest of the steps and into the darkness as the church of Gabriel Karras begins to burn to the ground. Fade. }
