I attended my first ROH show ever yesterday as it was just around the corner from my house here in sunny Los Angeles for the WrestleReunion convention. I was supposed to go last year, but Lex Sense bailed on me at the last minute and I didn't want to go it alone. He also bailed on me this year, but I got another buddy of mine to go with me, as well as our girlfriends, who were down just to see all the oily muscles.
No seat was a bad seat as it was in a ball room of a hotel, so it could only fit maybe 250 people, and the event did seem full by the time the show began. We happened to get a row right next to the entrance way which was cool. But before it began, a majority of juggalos decided to sit behind us. Loud and obnoxious as they were (and I'm pretty sure one was a drug dealer), they called over to a friend, and as she made her way over, the guy that called out to her said, "**** I think she's coming over to sit with us. She's loud and crazy, but she has a heart of gold." I didn't see the heart of gold part, but the rest was spot on. She didn't know a single wrestler, but shouted at the top of her lungs non-stop for the first half of the show, yelling obscenities and the like. I wouldn't mind if it was a little bit, but it was non-stop. At one point, one of the Briscoe brothers looked straight at her, which was pretty funny. Luckily, after intermission, she and the rest of her cronies found out Shaggy and Violent J were in the crowd and left to hang out with them. I now hate juggalos.
As for the card, it was pretty awesome. I didn't know any of the wrestlers in the first match, but it was entertaining. You could tell the guys were trying hard to prove themselves to the crowd. After that was All Night Express vs. Cutlers, which was also solid, but not too fancy. From then on, it was just fun. It seemed like all the veterans were just having a good time, smiling during the matches and joking with the crowd and stuff like that. Colt Cabana vs. The Briscoe with teeth was a good match with comedy spots in the first half. The match of the night IMO was definitely Davey Richards vs. TJ Perkins. Both awesome mat technicians who nearly killed each other before Davey finally took it with the arm bar.
Then intermission. That's when everyone saw Edge. So if he wanted to be hidden, he picked the worst time to enter, because it's as everyone else was leaving. While I was waiting outside of the bathroom, I also saw Jim Niedhart going into it.
Back from intermission was Christopher Daniels vs. the Briscoe missing some teeth for the TV title. It started out slow, but turned out awesome later. They had a lot of fun in there match, and I got a sweet shot of Daniel's mid BME on my phone. Then was Haas and Benjamin vs. the Kings of Wrestling. Now, I love good heels, which is why I bought a Kings of Wrestling shirt (also it's what I wanted Adam and my team to be called until I found out the name already existed), but I know good heels want to be booed. Which is why it's weird that everyone was cheering for them, despite them bashing L.A. and everything else heelish. I think being back on the indies lit a fire under Haas's ass because he was full of energy. He busted out of the curtain screaming "**** YEAH!" which made me instantly love him. Shelton was also bringing it, but Haas definitely made the match. The fans made Shelton laugh starting an "Ain't no stopping me....NOW" chant where only one guy would scream the first part, and then everyone would say the NOW part. Awesome match where WGTT got the duke, so hopefully the rubber match will be for the belts.
Then the ME was Roderick Strong putting up his belt against El Generico. This match seemed kind of slow the whole way, but the night was high energy all night until then, so it could have just been the crowd was out of gas. The match was still solid and had some great close calls. I also looked around and saw Delirous in the mask behind the production table, so that was kind of odd looking. As soon as the match ended, we got up to beat the crowd, but then Roddy got on the mic and called out a bunch of guys who ran to the ring to beat him up so he ran right past us to get away. Then the faces stood in the ring to thank the crowd. And while we waited to watch that, Hurricane Helms walked right by me! Then on the way out, some drunk dude put his arm around me and started talking to me about how no one likes the Miz, so why am I wearing his shirt? (I was wearing an "I'm Awesome" shirt.) I said I liked him and just brushed him off.
All in all, good times. I want to do the whole weekend, so maybe next year. If you guys ever come out to the convention (they said for sure it will be back next year), let me know, maybe we can chill, unless your name is Sam.
