We open up, Charlie Velez sitting in a hotel room. He’s on the bed, phone in his hand. He has the feeling he should call somebody, like his wife, maybe Venom, or somebody in his family, but he just sits there and stares at his phone. Something finally pops up, and Charlie begins to dial, but before he can finish his phone starts ringing.
“Hello?”
Hey it’s me, V. Dude, what the hell are you doing?
“What does it look like I’m doing man? I’m conducting business.”
Tearing down houses, rebuilding neighborhoods to get back at somebody? Who are you, Lex Luthor or something?
Charlie just laughs, lying back on the bed.
“So what’s up man, what are you calling for?”
Well because I’ve had that joke lined up for a while, and to also tell you that your wife was asking me questions about you.
“’About me’? What is that supposed to mean. I’m not hiding anything.”
Well, you didn’t tell her you were flying all the way to Boston to build a new neighborhood. You just kind of got up and left. So I had to explain that a bit.
“What did you tell her?”
…That you went to Boston to build a new neighborhood. She seemed confused for a bit, but when she sees the footage I think she’ll get it. How are you two doing anyway?
“We’re a married couple, how do you think we’re doing?”
Charlie rolls his eyes, shaking his head at his response.
So not so peachy, huh?
“We’re doing alright, I mean, better than we were a couple of months ago with that whole…thing. But it’s just that ever since I won this thing I’ve been on the road a lot. You know I missed Jonathan’s school play because I had to fly in early for the pay per view?”
Ah, the life of being champion. I’m envious, but glad I don’t have to deal with all that stuff.
“How did you do it, V? How did you balance all of this to be as great as you were?”
It’s not impossible, dude. You just have to balance it out. You know why I had such a successful reign? Because I know what it took, I knew the challenges ahead of me, I was groomed to be on top by my dad. Now, not to insult your dad but…
“Yeah I know where you’re going to go with this.”
There’s an awkward silence on the phone, as Charlie stands up and off the bed. He walks over to the window, where he can see the construction taking place.
Hey man, I have to let you go. I’ll call you when I get to the arena.
“Alright man, I’ll talk to you later.”
Charlie hangs up his phone, and he looks outside the window. From far away he can see the construction taking place, the building of something new.
He’s alone with his thoughts, and he thinks about how he could rebuild some things in his life.
But that has to wait.
“The wait was worth it, wasn’t it Kyle?
For weeks you wanted me to fight back, to stoop down to your level and try to get into your head. But you see, I went over your head, I did something you really couldn’t do.
I showed true power.
I showed you what I could do outside the ring, that money does conquer everything. You didn’t think I had it in me, did you? You never did, and even when I beat you into a bloody pulp this Sunday, you never will. But that’s alright Falcon, if there’s one thing I learned while being here in the nCw is that I rise above the haters-
I prove everybody wrong.
You’re right. Promotions with people full of me do fall, because yeah, we’d be all out for ourselves. We’d hurt the other man to a bloody pulp where there wouldn’t be any other wrestlers around. We’d do things that gets each other put away, where the fed will have to crumble due to not having any available workers. But you see Kyle, there’s one thing you have wrong. There’s only one Charlie Velez. I’m not like everybody else you’ve faced, that you’ve beaten. There’s only one Charlie Velez, and he resides here in the nCw. So while a fed with all of me would fail, a federation with one of me rises above and I show my dominance without another me taking me down.
Does that make sense, or did I get a little bit too deep for you?
Everybody isn’t like me because well, nobody is better than me. I have the World Championship. Who else does?
Oh wait…nobody.
Ah, I see what is now Kyle. It’s some deep rooted hatred you have for all the accomplishments that I’ve had that you had to wait your whole life for. You brought up teaching kids the ropes while I was a kid, but you fail to mention that when I was a kid I was doing things you couldn’t dream of doing. I was popular, well liked, hell, I brought home more championship banners for my school then you have in your career. I was a top scholar, the smartest kid in my class. I was the best athlete, I was everything that big Kyle Braddock never was. You see Kyle, I was groomed to be great. Since the day I was born, the doctor held me in his hands and he saw how great I would be. It was an honor just to be there to witness the birth of greatness. You asked me the question where I would be at the age of 32, and I’ll answer it like this.
I’ll be on top of the world, still.
I’ll still be doing things you couldn’t dream of doing. I’ll look back at my career and point out how I rose above everybody quicker than any nut in this company. You have a Hall of Fame resume, I have ‘the best of all time’ career and I’m not even thirty yet.
No, my drive to be the best isn’t what supposed to make me better than you.
The fact that I am better than you does, though.
It’s not about length of a reign, Kyle. As a ‘seasoned veteran’, you should know that. Since you’re a Hall of Famer, I thought you would know these things, but I guess being in the Hall of Fame doesn’t require the basic understanding of wrestling. You see, yeah, you did have a longer National Title run then me. Only by a few days, but hey, it’s something. But let me ask you this-who remembers it? Who remembers the time where Falcon was the National Champion? Ask any fan, and they’ll just turn and look and say ‘Who the hell is Falcon?’ You see, my National title reign touched people, and it set the standard of a new type of wrestling in this company. When I held that title, I was the face of the future and I went on my way to win the World Championship in less than a year. I was the only shining star in a dark cloudy night, I was, and still am
The best this company ever had to offer.
Come for me Kyle, give me all you got. That’s all I wanted to hear my man, that you were going to come and give me everything you have in your body. That you’re out for blood, that you’re big and mean now, that you are the man that I heard about when I first signed the contract here. You went soft before, but now you’re out to avenge that image of you hitting a woman, of you being ‘nice’ and ‘considerate’. Give me the new you, so I can him down in the center of the ring as well and stay as dominant as I ever was. I have nothing to be proud of?
Heh, you just haven’t been paying attention, have you?
Don’t worry what I do, Kyle. If anything ever happened, well…like I said before. I have friends in high places. You really think I’d build a prison around your house? Come on man, I was just joshing you. Pulling your leg and whatnot.
But it got you thinking, didn’t it?
Just sit back, and watch, Kyle.
I might teach you a thing or two about being a ‘heel’. Take notes and just
Thank Me Later.”
Charlie stands out there, next to the main…construction dude.
“So by this time tomorrow we should be finished building one house. I have to say, Mr. Velez, you got some great workers.”
“Yeah…”
Charlie’s checking his phone, seeing if he’s received a message or not.
“You in a rush, sir?”
“No, I’m just waiting for my wife to call me back. I left her a message before I got here, but no response. She should be home by now…”
Charlie makes a face, but looks back at the construction taking place.
“Has he gotten out of the house?”
“Not that I’ve seen sir. I had one of my men say he was staring out the window, but he was the only person who saw anything. He’s suspiciously quiet in there.”
Charlie would tell you he was paying attention, but he’s still stuck looking at his phone. The man notices it, and turns to Charlie.
“You don’t need to stay here Mr. Velez, you can go back home if you want.”
Charlie turns to the man, putting his phone back into his pocket.
“I’ll leave when the job is done.”
“Hello?”
Hey it’s me, V. Dude, what the hell are you doing?
