How’s it going to be Rob?
Are we going to do this the common way, where we take the week to absolutely tear each other to shreds with our words? Are we going to dissect each other’s words and try to make the other look like a fool all while accomplishing absolutely nothing? Are we going to be trite and yell to the other “haha, you are a ****ing imbecile, you spoke using a dangling modifier” or “only a retard makes gerund errors in sentences?”
If that is the game that you want to play, feel free. I am going to play a new game that people aren’t used to. I am going to play a game where I prove that everything people have said about me is absolutely true. Last week, I went through three men in order to get this shot at you and for all I have previously said about you not beating the top dogs around here allow me to wholeheartedly apologize because last week you had your coming out party against Falcon and you won, showing skill that I thought you didn’t have.
And to think, my whole pursuit of you started with the fact that you were a Young Gun, and honestly Roberto, the reason I am pursuing the Young Guns is because I feel they have ran their course. I feel that they are boredom personified. I am sick and tired of the pack mentality, and yes I understand why it is hypocritical that I too am a member of a stable right now.
But being the intelligent man that you seem to be you understand that sometimes you have to take the form of a monster to destroy it and I am still planning on doing what I promised. I defeated your noble leader months ago and now I have a chance to tear a title from your grip. I have the chance to further send you down to the depths of obscurity.
I am done playing games around here; I am taking what I want. See, to me it isn’t about winning or losing. Of course, it is easy waking up the following day with a win, but I feel no shame losing to another man because of the variables that go along with a wrestling match. Anything can happen on any day. Anything from the flip of a coin to a hangnail can affect your performance, so going back in history and saying I choke in big matches… You can say that but I haven’t truly choked.
Losing to Rob Diamond in title matches? I would barely call that choking. I stood with the likes of Steve Awesome and Alex Jones and won the Coliseum, I took Rob Diamond to the limits on two separate occasions and last week I defeated three of the top young talents around here. If you really want to look into history, check out how many times I have been pinned or submitted in a match in the last couple months…
Are you looking Roberto?
Still looking?
That’s right, three times since the month leading to the Coliseum. Three tiny times…
You can say this is going to be easy. You can say I am a disappointment or a choke artist but we know that each night you are holding that title close to your heart, you are shining it and polishing it and spending a great deal of time with it.
Because you know that you are in more danger of losing it now then you ever have been. You know that I am very capable of tearing that title from you. You know that I am capable of tearing your world apart.
But I don’t expect you to say that. I expect you to say many, many stupid things followed by boring things, followed by self praise followed by stories of your past.
But you have proven me wrong before, so maybe I am wrong. Maybe you can step outside of the fantasy and understand that I am real.
Understand that I am knocking at your door.
And understand that I am going to give you the best wrestling match you have ever been part of.
{Gib sits in the center of a wrestling ring, Xander sits perched on the top turnbuckle. Sweat pours from both men}
Gib: Are you ready for this boy? Verona, as much as I hate to admit it seems to have his **** together. Sure, he beat Spike Kane but truly, who hasn’t. He beat Todd Williams and I know you are friends with Todd and all but he isn’t the most dominating man in the ring but last week, he clipped the Falcon’s wings. He is going to be one of the biggest challenges that you have faced.
{Xander’s face looks at the mat, his face covered with deep thought}
Xander: Yeah, I am ready. I have proven that I am more then your son and by defeating him I will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that I have come into my own.
Gib: I think I know your problem kid, and I don’t mean to make it seem that it is some simple thing, or that you are some douchey little brat because of it. But, you are too concerned with building this legacy; you get hung up on it. You push hard for things that honestly you aren’t ready for. You have been here in nCw for less then a year combined over both of your stays, and you haven’t had much experience elsewhere. In that time you won the most grueling match in nCw, you have headlined the biggest show in the nCw something that took me over thirty years to do.
{Xander looks at his father, puzzled}
Xander: So what’s the point.
Gib: Quit trying to prove ****, quit trying to build your legacy because whenever you get stuck on that, you fall apart. You are so busy thinking about what you are going to leave to the wrestling world that you forget the main purpose of what we are doing.
Xander: Which is?
Gib: To ****ing wrestle numb nuts. It is to get in the ring and entertain the people who work all day, the people who fix pipes and mop up other peoples ****. The people that drive buses and build houses are the people we are doing this for. The people who work all week and make time to turn on Collision, the people who pay their money in order to see us live or buy those t-shirt with your face on them… That is why we do this. That is the reason, and this legacy ****, if you just do what you are here to do, wrestle, your legacy will build itself.
{Xander is silent, he looks at his Dad and nods}
Xander: Jesus man, who would think that a guy who spent his career running around drunk in a thong would actually know something useful.
Gib: This business is an act, the game we play is an act we do it to entertain, I did that to confuse my opponents you used the Harold mask in order to get a job here. We all play games here, we all do the things we need to do in order to put ourselves where we want to be and when we get there, that is when we soak it in, we can be ourselves.
Xander: Yeah…
Gib: You are strong boy, you are unbreakable. I have watched people put beatings on you that would end the careers of lesser people, I have watched people tear your body and beat you senseless but you keep going and that is what it takes, that is what Roberto doesn’t understand that resolve like that doesn’t come in a cracker jack box boy. Resolve that that can only come from one place.
Xander: And what place is that?
Gib: From having a genetic jackhammer for a father.
{The two share a laugh and Xander hops off the top rope. Holding a hand out to his Dad. Gib takes it and stands up, instantly grabbing him by the head and throwing him across the ring.}
Xander: You cheat douche…
Gib: Get up and quit whining, we have a lot to do. This is how we play, train hard, fight hard and regret nothing.
{Xander charges his Dad and the two tie up as the scene fades}
My Dad and I haven’t always seen eye to eye. When my mother died, I blamed him and he blamed me, it was the argument between us that caused her to storm from the house, that caused her to be on the road with the drunk driver that crashed into her door snuffing her life from this world.
When I first came around here, with Angel I wanted nothing more then to end my father’s career, it was my turn and he wouldn’t step down, because if he were around I would always just be the son of Gib, I would have to live a life being told that I get what I have because my father is one of the greatest ever. And it happened. Hell, it happens every week and sure enough just like I said, you mentioned it for what must have been the seven hundredth time since we have started our little collision course.
I guess I understand, you can’t think of other things to say. You can’t pick apart my desire or my work ethic, because they are unparalleled, you can’t tear apart my determination or toughness because you won’t find another man who has the pain threshold I have around here. You can’t find anything so you recycle what the others have said.
I tried to escape the constant nepotism discussion by being Homeless Harold, I tried to stop the obvious by taking what I wanted and I did just that. I did that and the things I did when I wore the mask don’t concern me. Everyone does bad things, it is the nature of the business we are in, everyone tries to push the limits and do things to get noticed. I sent Machado, Conway and Maniac on extended vacations due to my brutality and vicious ways and not once have I thought I went too far.
Because if they had more desire they never would have allowed themselves to be defeated in such a manner, they would have fought back, and fought back and not crumbled. I know that is what you are expecting me to do Roberto, I know you are expecting me to crumble but you need to understand.
You have nothing I haven’t faced before. You aren’t going to be the man to push me so far that I can’t go any further. I faced Rob Diamond, I faced Steve Awesome, I faced hungry superstars in the biggest matches around here but I still stand here.
I don’t want you to stop Verona, I don’t want your mercy because you will never do something to be that requires mercy. You are no more brutal and no more devastating then I am, feel free to look at my track record as I challenged you before.
I, like you don’t live for the approval of my co-workers or my employers, I work for the approval of only the people in the crowd Roberto, I work for the approval of the people who give us a job and perhaps that is why I have the respect that I have while you are looked at as a pompous self-serving douche. There is something my father told me when I was a kid and that was not to **** where I eat.
I am sure someone with the sophistication that you have would never say something so crude, lewd and socially unacceptable but it is the truth, and if you **** where you eat long enough Verona, well you are a smart dude, you can define words so use your lawyer skills to figure out what will happen.
You do what you do, and I will do what I do. You push tiny insignificant announcers aside using all the strength of the smurf brainy, and I will train with the best in the business. You chase around Lex and watch his shenanigans and I will study every tape that you have.
You continue to talk…
And I will continue to act…
You are about to be faced with the hardest and most grueling match of your career, whether you want to admit it or not because I may do the same things that your other opponents do…
But I do them harder.
You will find that out soon enough.
