Scene fades in on a truck traveling north on a main road, somewhere outside of, but close to, the thrilling city of Reno, Nevada, the place he lived for some time in his adult life. It is somewhere around eleven at night, and it is a cold, rainy night. Even for it being late July, a chill has oddly began to make its rare appearance during the overnight period. The truck is a dark-colored Silverado, looking at least two years old. The camera zooms in towards the driver's-side window, getting its first glimpse of the person behind the wheel. He is straining to see out of the windshield, the old wipers aren't doing their job so well anymore. Luckily for the driver, he reaches his destination just as the rain starts to pour. The sign on the front reads "Club Del Rio"; it is obviously a nightclub of some sort. The Silverado turns into the adjacent parking lot and pulls into an empty spot. The lights go out and the door opens, and the driver steps out into the rain. It is JackHammer. He almost looks like a different person, not clad in his trademark wrestling attire. Instead, he is wearing a pair of light blue jeans and a black muscle top. He actually looks a little out of place as he begins to speak.
JackHammer looks down at the ground to keep his face out of the rain, then walks around to the front of the building. There is a decent line at the door, and they are showing identification cards to a man behind the barrier. He is built like a train; bear-chested with arms that have obviously seen major gym time. He is waving a flashlight around and trying to keep the line back, and obviously getting somewhat aggrevated in the process.
Door Guard: LISTEN UP! THIS IS THE LAST TIME I'M GOING TO SAY IT! WE ARE TOTALLY FULL RIGHT NOW, SO NOBODY ELSE GETS IN UNTIL SOMEBODY LEAVES! GOT IT?!
JackHammer: How about I take that flashlight and shove it up your a*s-pipe, bulb first.
The bouncer spins around, ready to crush whoever made the comment. When he sees JackHammer, his face drops to the ground.
Door Guard: Jack?
JackHammer: The one and only. Tell me, Henry, how did you ever convince them to stick your ugly arse on door duty?
The bouncer makes a mad face, but it is obviously all in fun. He walks up to JackHammer and slaps him on the back, giving him a rough hug.
Henry: What the hell are you doing here? God I haven't seen you in...
JackHammer holds up one of his huge hands, all five fingers spread out.
JackHammer: Five years. I know, me coming back here is way overdue. I'm glad I ran into you man, I really am.
Henry: Likewise. You know man, things never were the same after you left.
JackHammer: What do you mean?
Henry: C'mon Jack, you know how it was. You were the one who kept us all sane half the time. It didn't matter how horrible a night we had in here, you and your stupid jokes always gave us a grin. I hope you're still as witty as you used to be.
JackHammer: If you only knew. So how is Tony and Tom? You still see them ever?
Henry: Still see them? Jack, they are working the stage right now.
JackHammer: What? They still work here too? That's crazy. How bout Chris, is that old prick here tonight? I think I need to bust his balls a little, just like when I worked for him.
Henry lowers his eyes and doesn't answer. JackHammer looks at him oddly.
JackHammer: Hey man, it's ok. I can always come back when he--
Henry: Chris passed away last year.
JackHammer is stunned. He doesn't answer.
Henry: Lung cancer, all the smokes he put away over the years. The weird thing was, he didn't even know he had it. He went home one night, laid down in bed, and never woke up. I guess it was better that way; he didn't suffer or anything.
JackHammer rubs his eyes. From the camera's position, it is hard to tell whether it is rain or tears on his face.
Henry: Don't feel bad man, he never had a bad thing to say about you, even after you left. Remember, he was the one who encouraged you to get into wrestling.
JackHammer: Yeah, I know. I just wish I could have seen him one more time, to thank him for everything.
Henry: We all do, my friend, we all do. Now c'mon, go inside and say hi. The guys will want to see you; Natalie too.
JackHammer looks at Henry, quickly.
JackHammer: Natalie? She still works here?
Henry shaked his head.
JackHammer: Damn, maybe I shouldn't go in there. I haven't even spoken to her since--
Henry: Before you left. It doesn't matter. You know that she would like to see you, regardless of the past. You need to go in there, and I think you know that.
JackHammer: Yeah, I know. I just hope she doesn't hate me.
Henry: Stop making excuses. Go.
JackHammer: Ok, I will. I'll catch you again before I leave.
Henry: Make sure you do, I dont want to have to mess you up.
They both laugh, and JackHammer walks by Henry and into the club. After walking down a small corridor, he makes his way into the main area. The club is packed, and people are stumbling over each other to get by. JackHammer turns left and stays to the outside of the crowd as best as he can, making his way towards the stage. As he gets closer, the camera spots the two men he is approaching. One is a tall, semi-built fellow, the other is a mid-height heavyset man. They are standing side by side on the stage, and as JackHammer steps up in front of them they simultaneously take on expressions similar to that of the doorman outside.
Tony: HOLY SH*T MAN!
Tom: What the hell are you doing here?
JackHammer: I thought I'd swing by and see how you fools were holding up. I figured that some drunk college kid would have pounded you two into oblivion by now.
They both laugh, and proceed to give JackHammer rough hugs and slaps on the back.
Tony: I can't believe you're here man, how long has it been?
JackHammer: Just about five years, Tony, this is my first time back since I left. I saw Henry outside, he told me I could find you two back here.
Tom: Freaking crazy, the three of us up on the stage. Just like the old days, huh?
JackHammer: Da*n straight, Tom, just like the old days. It's great to see you two.
Suddenly, shouts erupt and a small fight breaks out next to the stage.
Tony: Hey man, we gotta take care of this. Stick around though. We're getting off in about an hour, and then we're going to some diner uptown that Henry found. You down?
JackHammer: Definitely. I'll be here. I'm gonna take a stroll over to the bar for now.
Tom and Tony nod, then run towards the scuffle. JackHammer steps down from the stage and crosses the club again, this time towards the bar. When he is several feet away, he stops. His eyes seem to be on one of the girls mixing drinks. She is tall and slender, with dark hair that reaches the middle of her back. JackHammer sighs, then walks up and sits down directly in front of her. She is bent over the ice machine, and has not seen him yet.
JackHammer: Three Wise Men, please. Make 'em dance.
The bartender freezes, but does not look up. She seems stunned at what she has heard.
Bartender: You... you mean on the rocks, right?
JackHammer: C'mon, you know I've always hated that expression.
The girl slowly raises her eyes up from the ice. When she sees who the voice came from, her eyes widen and she drops the ice scoop back into the machine.
JackHammer: Hello Natalie.
Natalie: J... J...
JackHammer smiles.
Natalie: Jack?
JackHammer: You were expecting... the Emperor of Japan?
Natalie: Always the jokester. What are you doing here?
JackHammer: If you only knew how many times I've heard that in the last 10 minutes.
Natalie: ...
JackHammer: Why do you think? I had to see this place again. It's been so long since I've been back.
Natalie: Well, you should be happy about that. The reason you haven't come back is because you haven't needed to. You're a wrestler now -- that's quite the step up from a lowly bouncer.
Natalie seems to be a bit hostile towards him. Not rude, but hesitant to get into deep conversation.
JackHammer: Cmon now, you know how much I loved this job. I never would have left if --
He trails off.
Natalie: I know. Chris. But it's what he wanted, Jack. To him, you were like one of his own. We all were.
JackHammer: Christ. I never even got to see him. I never even got to say thank you for everything he did for me. He died without even knowing...
Natalie: He knew. Trust me, he knew.
JackHammer: Thanks. I'm really glad I got to see you again. You look incredible, just like you always did.
Natalie: Jack...
JackHammer: The truth is, I didn't expect to run into you. I didn't even think you still worked here. But now that I got to see you, well, it brings alot back to me, you know? I can help but think about --
Suddenly, Tom approaches and slugs JackHammer in the back.
Tom: Hey man, good news. I just talked to the head bouncer and he said that he's all set with us for the night. Tony's grabbing Henry and then we're taking off. You ready?
JackHammer: Oh, um, yea I guess so.
Tom: Great. I'm gonna go get the car, meet me outside in a minute.
JackHammer: Right. Listen, Natalie, I guess I have to go.
Natalie: Yeah, I guess.
JackHammer: Well, it was good to see you. Bye now.
JackHammer stands up from the stool and turns to walk away. Before he can take a full step, he turns back to the bar.
JackHammer: Natalie, I'm sorry, but I have to know. After I left, did you ever, you know, think about us again?
Natalie: Not now, Jack, please.
JackHammer: Ok, but I want to come back and talk to you some more. Seriously. When is a good time?
Natalie: I... I dont know, Saturday maybe. I don't know if I'll be on the schedule. You can come in and see if I'm here, but I can't promise you anything.
JackHammer: Fair enough. I'll see you then.
Natalie: I said...
JackHammer: I know, maybe.
With that, JackHammer turns away and walks toward the door, making his way out of the club. He does not stop to look back, but he can't help but wonder if she is watching him go. He hopes that she is as anxious about seeing him again as he is. For now though, he has other matters to discuss with his former co-workers. At the time being, it's all he can afford to concentrate on, because if his ideas are able to come into play, it would impact the lives of many, many people. Outside, JackHammer reunites himself with Tony, Tom and Henry.
Tom: So I hear you've got a big match coming up Sunday.
JackHammer: Something like that, yeah.
Tony: You alright, Jack? You seem kinda... distant.
JackHammer: Huh? Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. Just thinking.
Tony: Alright. So what do you have planned for Sunday?
As if being snapped back into reality, JackHammer begins a promoesque speech.
JackHammer: Sunday. I make my ppv debut as I team up with Christian Shwiezer to face off against The Jason Blair Experience This isn't going to be easy and it's not going to a match I can win without actually doing anything. But I wasn't expecting a match of that caliber.
I won't deny for a minute that you are perhaps one of the brightest star in this federation, Jason Blair. Without a doubt, you've got skill and potential, but they can only lead you so far down that dirt road before you come to a fork and have to pick the path for yourself. Choosing the right path leads you to a destiny filled with everything you could possibly want: titles, glory, fame, fortune. However, choosing the wrong path, well, I assume you're smart enough to know that one without me delving into it.
This is interesting, there's no doubt about it, Jason Blair. You have been picking fights with some of the best that the NCW has to offer. I've been studying you all this week, and I'm not the least bit impressed. It saddens me that someone who was a champion of obvious recognition, a member of such a big group, who makes such second-grade mistakes. To me it seems like when you get into a big time main even type match you make second-grade mistakes and you choke. I certainly hope that you don't do the same thing in our match on Sunday. It would be the death of you, Jason Blair. Not that it would be a bad thing in my eyes.
If you're so hellbent on beating me, Jason Blair, why not just do it the old fashioned way? Bludgeon me into oblivion with a foreign object while the referee's attention is too busy on the big-chested blonde in the front row. Seems to work for every other person who knows he can't win. Well, those people who don't have a clue as to what the hell they're doing. You see, I'm looking forward to our match, Jason Blair. Looking forward to you trying everything in your God-given powers to nail me in that easily reversible finisher of yours, only to have me break out of it and introduce you to the real nightmare of The Earth Shatter. Call me all the names you want. Say what you want to say about me, Jason Blair, it does not matter. Some would say that I'd need an opportunity to hit the Earth Shatter on you. From the way I see things, I believe opportunity has just knocked. Get ready to ante up, Jason Blair, cuz it's time to put your money where your mouth is and fight like ya mean it. Welcome to your true nightmare, Jason Blair, for I am your walkin' nightmare. And there isn't a damn thing you can do about it.
JackHammer turns to Tom, Tony and Henry, smiling a broad smile. After seeing their mouths ajar, he shrugs.
JackHammer: What? Ain't a guy allowed to get stuff off his chest once in a while? Sheesh.
Tom: Yes, yes, you can... but do us a favor. Do it when we're not around.
JackHammer: Point taken. Let's roll.
With that, JackHammer joins his former co-workers by jumping into Henry' minivan. The engine roars to life in the van as it rides off into the night. Scene fades out on the car fading away.
