He took a quick breath before he knocked on the door. Hotel room number 332. It’s funny, he got there as quick as he could but now he was hesitant to go inside. He wasn’t sure what he might see, and he wasn’t sure how he would cope with it when he did. He didn’t know the whole story. Hell, all he really got was a sentence or two. But what he did hear, made him wish he had the power to make people explode on a whim. And the way she said it, the tremble in her words, the fear in her voice, he didn’t care if she killed his brother, he was going to swoop in and save her when she needed him most.
*Knock-Knock*
He places his head against the door and speaks into it.
“It’s Steve.”
Slowly the door opens, and Steve holds his breath the whole time, waiting, half-expecting her to look like she just got out of a car wreck. To be honest, she didn’t look that bad. She had a decent bruise on the side of her face, you can almost see the Nike symbol, and she pressed an ice pack on it. But when Steve saw her, oh Lord, you’d of thought she got hit by an Amtrak.
“Oh my God, are you okay!?”
He rushes into the hotel room and wraps his arms around her. She grips him tight with her free hand and pulls him as close as she could. Like she’s never been super kicked before.
“Yeah….I think so….it just all happened so fast…..”
The both let go of the hug but Steve keeps his embrace by griping onto her shoulders and looking her in the eyes. By the way he was looking back at her she immediately knew what he was thinking before he even said a word. He was thinking revenge.
“Crystal….I need you to tell me who did this to you?”
He said, trying to keep his cool in the process.
“Tell me what sunovabitch did this!”
She hesitates to say his name. She was just still in shock from the ordeal. Her brown eyes stare past him, replaying the moments that were still fresh in her head.
“I can’t believe he did it…..he just kicked me right in the face…..”
The more she said it, the more it continued to piss him off.
“Who Crystal? Who!?”
She bites her lip to try to stop herself from crying but she couldn’t help herself.
“I know we were at each others throats with this Divorce, but he took it too far….”
Steve begins to unravel the clues.
“…..Todd? Todd did this to you?”
She scrunches her eyes tight, trying to block the memory as she nods her head. That was everything he needed to hear. It was simple what had to be done next.
“Then Todd has to die.”
He cracks each one of his knuckles in two quick motions and he heads for the door as Crystal follows in hot pursuit.
“Steve! Wait!”
Tight shot on what looks to be a shirtless Steve Awesome. Or maybe it was one of those v-neck shirts? Anyway, the main point is that it’s Steve Awesome. Or maybe possibly being shirtless is a big deal too? I don’t know, but the fact remains that he’s Steve, and he’s got that cocky smirk that he made famous.
“Well Rob….it’s come down to this.”
His sunglasses have his own custom heart logo emblazoned in both lenses. Like a Boss!
“Our match. Where we settle everything. Where we leave it all in the ring. Where we pretty much set the freaking bar for most every generation to come, is in less then twenty four hours.”
He cocks an eyebrow.
“Are you ready?”
Jabroni.
“I’m ready, quite frankly I’m sick of talking man. I really am. I gave you the whole scoop. What I’m fighting for, why I’m fighting for it. You don’t have to believe it Rob. You can just blow it off like it doesn’t mean anything. Just old Steve Awesome running the sympathy tip to get the extra brownie points. You can call it sympathy, but that wasn’t what I was going for. I was just telling you like it is Rob. I was just explaining to you whats inside me, in case you actually cared or wanted to know.”
Doesn’t change anything one way or the other.
“A few months ago at A Night to Remember you told a funny looking, gumpy kid that he needed to have something to fight for. Something that makes him get up in the morning and fight every day. I laid everything that makes me tick on the line, and now it’s time to man up and get ready for what’s about to go down. You know the reason why I’m fighting….
He pulls the shades off. That’s when you know it’s time to get serious.
“What’s yours?”
He’s waiting for an answer.
“Because to be perfectly honest Rob, I don’t know what it is. Is it still Zelda? You picture perfect finance? Of course you gotta fight for her, because she isn’t here to fight for herself. Is it for your new home? Or your unborn child that doesn’t even exist yet?”
If that happens in his next promo I’m gonna laugh.
“Or is it to just keep the world title in your grubby little hands for just that much longer? Are you fighting to just stay alive on top of that pedestal for another thirty days until you have to defend it again? Is it for world peace? Is it to stop Jim Belushi? Is it to bring back the McRib? Seriously Rob, stop me if I guess it.”
He smiles into the camera.
“Or is it something more then that? Something that can’t even be explained? Whatever it is Rob, you better gather all of it up that you can and bring it with you to Picture Perfect. I wanna see what’s so damn special about Rob Diamond in the first place. What in the hell made you a world champion? Aside from an amazing, hard fought win over your brother….
…….
…and an apathetic bird who didn’t care about the title in the first place. Hell, he couldn’t even muster enough motivation to even fight some thugs in a club, let alone fight you off.”
Steve shrugs.
“Your good Rob, but I don’t know, I just don’t see what makes you the best. All you’ve ever done was beat jobbers in the X-Division, commit suicide and try four different times to beat Falcon. Sure you may be the world champion but you know what you really are?
Ready?
“A duplicate.”
He nods, allowing the words to sting a bit.
“Your just a carbon copy of me and you think because you’ve won more world title matches then I have lately that it makes you better then me. You think because you’ve walked the same path that I have, and beaten guys that I beat before you, that it makes you better then me. All you’ve ever wanted in your life was to be just like me Rob. And look at you man, you’ve managed to pull off my style quite well for yourself.
He smiles.
“You took everything you’ve ever learned from me and the things I taught you and you’ve applied them well. But here’s where it ends Rob. Here’s where the walls come tumbling down. The REAL Steve Awesome is coming to play. And that scares you Rob. That’s why you’ve been trying to run my name in the ground. You talk about me losing title matches, cheating to win matches, doing the same angle every summer, because your trying to convince yourself that I’m not all I’m cracked up to be.
But it didn’t work. Admit it!
“Ask yourself if your really ready, Rob. Ask yourself if you even partially know what I'm willing to go through to get that championship. I know I've said it before Rob, but I can't explain it any other way. You better bring what it is that makes Rob Diamond, Rob Diamond. You better bring whatever it is in your head that makes you believe you can stop me after everything I've dealt with. I want you to take a minute and really ask yourself if your ready....
He flashes that cocky smirk.
“Then ask yourself again just to be sure.”
We open up on Todd Williams doing…oh…whatever the devil the black folks do these days? Um let’s see….drinking forties and rolling blunts. All the paraphernalia appears on his coffee table and he looks up and gives the camera an annoyed look.
“Yo, that’s racist.”
He shoves the stuff out of the way and goes back to killing Graff in Halo when suddenly there arose a big clatter!
“What?”
Todd stands up and glances around the room waiting for something and when nothing happens he shrugs his shoulders and goes back to the video game.
“YOU PIECE OF ****!”
Suddenly a blue of sexy abs and incredible hair comes rushing into the room like a tazmanian devil and before Todd even realizes what’s going on he finds himself pressed up against the wall with the forearm of Steve Awesome pressed up against his neck, rapidly squeezing the life right out of him.
“Hi Todd….”
Steve says, getting face to face with the man he was going to murder.
“….I was just passing through the neighborhood and I thought to myself, hey I have a question that only my friendly neighborhood girlfriends babies daddy could answer.”
Crystal finally shows up behind Steve and she sees what Steve’s done already. Even though she didn’t exactly want all this violence and drama to happen, it sort of felt good that it was.
“Why in the…..”
He jerks his elbow into his adams apple to really emphasize the curse word.
“….did you kick Crystal in the face for?”
Steve waits for a response but all he hears is gasps for air and gurgling sounds.
“Huh? You got an answer for that? Huh tough guy?”
Each question draws more pressure from the Awesome One. Todd actually started to look a little purple.
“Why did she call me crying? Don’t got an answer? Okay, well I’m going to kill you now.”
He asked through gritted teeth. Crystal had to interject.
“He can’t explain himself if he’s dead, Steve.”
Steve considers that excellent point for a moment or two and then lets go. Todd immediately slumps to the floor, clutching his neck, gasping for air. He wheezes, his lungs working overtime to refill all that it’s lost.
“What do you care anyway?”
He finally manages to push out. Steve reaches down and grips Todd by the shirt and pulls him up to his feet.
“I care because she’s my girlfriend you idiot! And I love her!”
In the background, you could see Crystal’s eyes light up with glee at that comment. Steve realizes what he just said.
“You love me?”
He turns away from Todd and back to Crystal.
“I do. I totally do baby.”
“But what about all that stuff about us not knowing each other as well as we think we do? You said we had to rethink this whole relationship.”
He nods his head.
“I know, and I did think. I thought about everything Crystal and I realized, I don’t know as much about you as I did….but the things I do know….make me love you already! You annoy the piss out of me sometimes, and that thing about you kissing a dude, you’ll have to make that up to me….but I don’t wanna change a thing about us Crystal! I love you!
She kisses him and hugs him.
“I love you too, Steve.”
Steve blinks.
“Wow…..I was sort of expecting a bigger reaction to all this then that.”
She shrugs.
“Yeah well, I sort of knew already thanks to Rob.”
Steve face palms.
“****ing Rob! Way to douche over my third rp climax you piece of crap.”
He shakes a vengeful fist toward the heavens.
“Oh well, we’ll see how epic things will be when he reveals Zelda’s been stripped of her title per the contract stipulation. Or you know, whatever else he quickly changes it too, to try and save face.”
Suck it? Steve wraps an arm around his loving girlfriend and heads for the door. But the sound of somebody less important clearing his throat behind them stops them in his tracks.
“Hello? Forgetting about someone?”
Sorry Todd, it’s a habit of ours. They both turn around, Steve steps forward.
“You know? The guy whose hotel room you broke into and then possibly damaged his trachea? I’m going to have to pay for that broken door you know! You know what, I’m gonna kick your ass Steve!”
Todd steps forward.
“You know why? Because I no longer take anyones crap. That’s why I kicked Crystal! That’s why I’m about to kick your ass Steve. Because I’m THEODORE COYOTE!”
He throws his head back toward the moon.
“HHHHHOOOOOWWWWWW-”
*SUPERKICK'D!*
And Todd crumples down to the ground with a super kick much to the cheers of everyone watching at home. Steve then quickly throws Todd into one of those big laundry baskets and shoves it down the hall way and it crashes into a wall.
*CRASH! SHATTER! MEOWWWWWW!*
Steve plants a kiss on his ladies lips.
“You know your gonna owe me for kissing that guy in the club though right? Come on, let's get out of here."
Steve goes to leave but Crystal holds back, Steve turns around to see why she wasn’t moving and that’s when he saw the seductive grin she had on her face.
“I actually have a better idea. Time to pay a debt."
We cut back to Steve Awesome, seemingly in the same place he was earlier. This time the camera is back farther and we can see Steve sitting on a couch. The area around them was a mess. Blankets, clothes, a broken lamp. Looks like a war zone.
“You might ask yourself why I’m so cocky?”
Because he’s Steve Awesome?
“It is sort of a big change compared to how I was feeling the past week. It’s just the calm before the storm. it’s just that moment of tranquility before **** hit’s the fan. I don’t feel much of anything except an inner peace that I know is going to go away as soon as I walk into that arena tomorrow night.”
The blankets near him start moving and Crystal’s head pops up from underneath the blankets. She looks extremely satisfied, lets just leave it at that.
“But I have to be cocky, Rob. I have to stare you in the face and tell you, you suck. Because this Sunday night, I’m going all in, blind. I have no idea what’s going to happen. I have no idea how much blood we will shed, how much sweat we will lose, and how many tears will fall by the end of the night. But I can’t let myself worry about any of that. Because this is it Rob, it’s now or never and I’m picking now! All those moments….every crushing defeat, every missed opportunity, every heart I broke during those warm summer months…it all comes to a head this Sunday.”
He nods.
“And I know you’ve worked hard too Rob, but I’ve been working for this a lot longer then you have and I never ONCE thought about giving up like you did Mr. Slits McGee.”
He runs a hand through his silky black hair as Crystal cuddles up more with her man. Still slightly naked.
“”I don’t wanna take your title friend….”
His face dances on the edge of remorse but it quickly snaps back.
“…but I'm going too.”
He throws them up.
“Deuces.”
*Knock-Knock*
He places his head against the door and speaks into it.
“It’s Steve.”
Slowly the door opens, and Steve holds his breath the whole time, waiting, half-expecting her to look like she just got out of a car wreck. To be honest, she didn’t look that bad.
