..::PROLOGUE::..
The stage has been set. The ring awaits, and this, my final promotional video before Nothing to Lose, is all that stands between Bates, the Honor Championship, and myself. Once this is done, I can get onto the task at hand and that is to finally step into the ring with Bates and settle this once and for all. This match will be pure mayhem. Nothing to Lose, indeed. It will be a battle that will test the character and the will of both Kristoff Liam Bates as well as myself.
~Honor Rules~
~Win by Submission Only~
This is going to be the battle of my life, and I know it. This is going to be more intense than any other match I have ever been in. That is definite at this point. This match will twist the very fabric of my being and it will push me to do things that I have never had to do in a wrestling ring before. Kristoff, you are a worthy opponent, sir, and win, lose, or draw we are both going to remember the other for a long, long time after this match. I feel that this match will be something that you and I can look back on as a catapult to bigger and better things for both of us. And in case you missed the point of my last few statements..
~That's a sign of respect!~
All kidding aside, Bates, you are a worthy adversary both mentally as well as physically. You will take me to my physical limits, as I will you. Electricity will fill the air at Madison Square Garden, and we will put on a show like no other. As it is my intentions to never tap out and never give up, I assume yours is the same. This match will push both of us past limits we never knew we had. That is a fact that I cannot deny. But I am ready. Yes, I may be putting myself into a position to be defeated as I have been weakening myself with training. But I am also strengthening my resolve. I am building up my pain tolerance because I know that you will bring more pain than I ever dreamed of.
~And thats the damnable misery of it all~
Kristoff, we both have goals in life, in business, and in professional wrestling. Both of our goals are built on winning more matches than we lose, and being considered one of the very best to ever set foot in the ring. That's where we are today. We are two titans of the business. You are already successful. YOu have been near the top of the mountain and are considered one of the top superstars in the sport. I am climbing up, and widely considered one of the top rookies in NCW. Being a rookie has its disadvantages for sure. I don't know as much as I should. I am not as seasoned as some of the more established superstars such as yourself. I don't have near as much ring time as you do. I admit it, Bates.
~I am at a disadvantage!~
But on the other side of the coin, sir, I have less wear and tear. I have less beatings on my body than you do. I have less battle scars and I have a much less tortured body. I have done my research, Bates, and you have been involved in some of the most epic battles NCW has ever seen. That can be both good, and bad. That can be both advantageous as well as hurtful to you in this match. As the sly veteran, you may know a few things I don't. As the upstart rookie, I may have a bit more endurance than you. So in the end, my friend, I think it will play out evenly. I believe you and I to be more than just opponents this week.
~We are kindred spirits.~
Both of us have chosen professional wrestling as a second career. Both of us use this profession as a way to channel our inner anger and inner demons into pain and suffering for others. Both of us have an intensity that is unmatched in any other superstar in NCW. We are the same, you and me. And in just a few days, we will set foot into the same ring, nose to nose, and do battle in the most famous arena in the world. We are going to tear the house down, there is no doubt about that. The only question at this point is who will come out on top? Who will be the first to break under the pressure? Who will finally push the other past the point of no return and walk out of Madison Square Garden the NCW Honor Champion? The answer, quite simply...
~Is yours truly~
..::SETTING::..
There is a cold wind blowing across the landscape of New Championship Wrestling. That cold wind, is the wind of change. A change of new blood, new superstars, and new challenges for everyone. Everything, quite frankly, is a new challenge for our protagonist. The good doctor turned professional wrestler has a lot to learn about this business but knows that deep down inside he has it in him to be great. Not just great, one of the all time greats. It has been an amazing run thus far to be sure, and this weekend, at NCW's August Pay Per View offering, Nothing to Lose, he sets his sights on his first ever NCW Championship. Currently that championship is held by another man who chose wrestling as his second profession, Kristoff Bates. One of the pure animals in the business, his anger and self loathing make him one of the toughest men to beat in all of NCW. But that is the goal of the good doctor anyway. To beat him. To make him tap out and have his hand raised as the new Honor Champion.
~Honor~
Now that's a word that isn't use a lot these days. In fact, you would be hard pressed to count the number of NCW Superstars who exemplify the very meaning of the word on more than one hand. Doctor Potter is one of those men, and as we watch him go forth on his quest to win his first every championship, we watch him do so... with honor. With courage. With enough guts and determination to outlast most opponents. I will note that I said...
~MOST Opponents~
This Kristoff Liam Bates is an entirely different breed of animal. He has a depth to him unlike ninety nine percent of all other superstars in this company. And that shall make for an incredibly hard to defeat. This is not lost on Doctor Potter or his good friend Phillip Claxton by any stretch. This is the hand that is dealt, and this is they type of match that separates the contenders from the pretenders. And that is why we see Jonas training so hard this week. He knows it will be an all out battle. Simply put..
~It will be a war!~
The scene fades in and we see Doctor Potter at his church. A large Catholic church in the heart of Manhattan, with cobblestone steps and eighteenth century architecture. One of the oldest churches ever built in New York to be exact. He found this place not long after the attacks on the World Trade Center almost ten years ago. He is seen kneeling at the alter. He lights a candle, then bows his head to pray. As he does, the camera moves in closely.
..::DOCTOR JONAS POTTER::..
Dear heavenly father. This mission that I have set myself on is taking me into a dangerous match this week against one of the most brutal men in this business. Please guide me, help protect me on this journey and keep me safe along the way. I pray that you give me the strength and courage to fulfill my goals and guide me as you see fit.
Lord, I also pray for my opponent. Bates is a peculiar character and I fear his problems are more than any therapy or medicine can repair. It is only through your hand that he can shed his pain and misery, Lord, and I ask that you lay your hand upon his heart and take his pain away.
I ask all of these things in the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit.
Amen
..::SETTING::..
Doctor Potter crosses himself and stands up. He walks to the back of the church and sits down. The deafening silence comforts him as he admires the intricacies of the building. He marvels at all the detail that was put into this church so many years ago by true craftsman as he sits and enjoys the last bit of peace and quiet he will get. The hustle and bustle of pay per view weekend starts tomorrow with press conferences, production meetings and the like. It's quite tiresome, but as always, you work through it. He sits there for a bit longer, closing his eyes and listening to the complete and total silence for a while. After what seems like an eternity, he stands up and walks towards the back of the church. As the sunlight glares in his eyes, and the voice of New York City shatters the silence, he walks out the door and into the crowd as the scene fades to black.
..::EPILOGUE::..
Kristoff, I know you aren't a religious man. I tend to leave religion out of the workplace, however, I felt it important to let you into this portion of my life. I felt it necessary to let you know that as much as I want to beat you this week, I respect you as an opponent and as a person. You will be my greatest test to date, there is no disputing that. You have beaten bigger, better, stronger opponents than I have. That is also a fact that I cannot refute. The question that I have to ask is
~Does it really matter?~
As a veteran, you have been given those chances. As a veteran, you have been able to face the top of the roster. The cream of the crop. The best of the best. That, sir, is what comes with success; past AND present. As I compile victories week in and week out. As I beat opponent after opponent, that same success finds itself in my court as well. Your comparison of victories was a bit childish, but also enlightening. It let me know that you are trying to psychologically tell yourself that you are better than me before you get in the ring on Sunday. You are trying to make yourself believe that this match should and will be an easy match for you to secure victory in. And that adds up to one, small, simple fact..
~You're Scared!~
You are scared that maybe, just maybe, this doctor turned wrestler has exactly what it takes to take that belt, or burden as you call it, from around your waist. You know this to be true, although I doubt you would admit it. You have to keep your macho, bad ass facade up a bit longer, I think. And that's certainly your own personal choice. But know this, Kristoff, I plan on taking you to the very limits this Sunday night. You said You are going to show me what I am made of. But I think you got it all wrong.
~I am going to show you what I am made of!~
And at the end of the night we will see who is standing tall. Claxton said something to me before I left the house earlier that has stuck with me. We were discussing the match and I mentioned that I want to win the Honor Championship to prove that I belong. To prove to myself that I am successful in this profession. He look at me with that stupid smile on his face, and quit simply stated..
~If you aren't good enough without the title, you will never be good enough with it!~
I find it both insightful and extremely philosophical. Don't tell Claxton I said that, but it makes sense. If I am not happy with myself before I win the title, then I will never be happy with it around my waist. So, as I sat there in that church, I centered myself. I put myself in a place mentally, emotionally, and spiritually that puts me in extreme harmony. I am successful to have even made it to this point. I am successful to even be given a contract from the top company this business has to offer. I have made it. Whether I win this match or not makes no difference. Do I want to win? Well, yes. Do I want to represent NCW as the Honor Champion? Well, that's a no brainer! Do I have to beat you to be considered successful in NCW? No...
~But it sure won't hurt!~
