Ayla was sitting in a chair, and her first thought was that they could have picked a more comfortable chair. Then maybe have the walls painted more than a drab yellow, I mean.. who paints walls yellow? They must be.. No, she was getting off track. She needed to be focused, ready to dispense her brand of verbal justice to whatever questions she was asked.
Hello fans, this is Wendy Meyerson for the E-Zine Ultimate Wrestling Live dot com.
This whole interview thing had been Raynes idea. Ayla didn't feel comfortable with live interviews, preferring the comfort of the dark recording booth. But Rayne had insisted these kinds of things were neccessary to legitimize your statement. It made sense, since she did them frequently, with the ever mind numbing how are you still alive Carly Robbins. But Ayla was determined to make the best of it, painting a smile on her face.
I'm here with a hot sexy new Starlet..
The Smile disapeared. Did she really go there?
Taking both the wrestling world by storm and bringing sexy to a whole new level while doing it..
And was replaced by a scowl. Doesn't do research either.
Miss Ayla St. James! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us.
Thanks for having me..
This was a recorded interview, to be written into an article, so people reading it wouldn't know Ayla was scowling like mad, and there was a drip of contempt in her voice.
So, I think the burning question on everyone's mind, is what is being a Starlet like?
Ayla stared hard at the woman, who just stared back unblinking, completely oblivious to the rage she was inducing.
You.. don't watch wrestling.. do you?
What do you mean, of course I do!
Well then, being a Starlet is great! All I gotta do is shake my ass, show a little bit of my D cups and then get pinned.. and they pay me!
Really?
Is she serious?
Of course not! That's what they expect us to do. That's what the front office wants us to do. They think we're filler, that the only reason people don't hit up the bathroom or the merchandise stand during women's matches is because they want to snap a photo and hope they catch a nip slip or the dream that one of us isn't wearing underwear...
In that case, then what does being a Starlet mean to you?
It should mean giving your all, all of the time. Get it together or go home. They throw terms around for male wrestlers like legend and superstar, and they give no less, so why should we be different?
Because you're women?
And they say that I'm dense.
Why should that matter? We're the same. We fight, we hurt, we bleed, we sell our lives to entertain everyone, regardless of gender.. and here you are.. telling me that I should play nice and cute and be all sexy like, right?
She shrugs. Ayla has never wanted to punch a bitch in the face more. Well, punch a non wrestler in the face, to be precise.
And then what? Become expendable.. become just another commodity to be discarded when I gain five pounds? To be shown the door if theres a little cellulite on my thighs? How about if at some point down the road I have to have my implants removed due to health concerns, and then I should worry about losing my job? It's sickening to think that we train to fight each other for a living, and all they see is dollar signs on my chest...
If that's what the people pay to see..
That was her point?
Who are these people?
Wrestling fans of course.
Someone needs to slap that retarded smirk of this chicks face. Any takers?
Awww did you read that in a fortune cookie? Let me tell you something.. fans of wrestling, watch a match, no matter who is in it. They don't care if it's men or women, they pay to see action.. to watch the drama unfold in the ring. The people you call "wrestling fans"..
Complete with finger quotes.
Are the same people who spend hours on forums talking **** about everyone and everything. They consider anyone they don't like to be worthless, think everyone they do like should have titles galore.. and consider us, nothing more than soft core porn. Now tell me, who would you like to sit next to at a show?
The woman went to open her mouth. But Ayla cut her off.
Don't answer that. You'd probably be willing to sit there and let a guy splooge all over your chest if it meant you got some TV time. Well, we're not. You want to know what it's like being a Starlet? Ask Roxxxie.. or whatever her name is.. You want to know what it's like to be a woman's professional wrestler?
Ayla stood up in one fluid motion.
Then you can come talk to me... We're done here..
But..
No, we're done..
Ayla left her sitting in the chair. The woman stared at her as she walked out. Then turned to a guy standing off camera holding a boom mic.
We get that?
Every word.
Good. I want you to give it the the treatment.
Make her look like a skanky hoe?
You know it.
Outside the room, Ayla slammed her fist against the wall. Totally didn't go as planned. She sighed, and leaned against the wall.
First real interview, and this crap happens.. now I see what she goes through...
That's when you know a cause is worth fighting for..
Falcon had meant to close up on her and put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. But she suddenly turned and threw her arms around his neck, clinging to him. A position he found himself in more often than not as of late. Though now.. it was slowly becoming less embarassing.
How do you mean?
When people scoff at what you say, and never take you seriously.. even after you prove everything you said to be true.. it shows that what you have is important. People won't fight what they know to be true.
Is that how you get by?
Truthfully, I don't know.
The look on his face said otherwise, but Ayla let it pass. He didn't press her, so she felt like she owed him one.
They're going to make me look like a fool.
Probably..
Not helping..
Sorry..
She pulled away a little, but only enough to look at his face. There was a tense moment between them. Then Falcon slowly started to lean in. In time for her to pull away from him.
Well, now that, that whole mess is over, let's go do something fun.
Now Falcon was the one suddenly feeling stupid.
Al..Alright..
Yay!
She was off, bounding down the hall. Falcon watched her leave, then sighed heavily, shaking his head.
This used to be easier... damn it..
The womans head popped out of the door.
Oh.. sorr.. hey! You're that Falcon guy! You want to have an interview to go alongside your girlfriends? She didn't give us much I'm afraid.
Without looking, Falcon slowly started to push the door closed.
Hey, what're you.. stop!
Thud.
"If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything."
Sorry, Kyle and I watched Sucker Punch the other day, it kinda stuck with me. It's also a Skindred song he says but, I dee kay. The point of the phrase is that when you don't have goals, don't have conviction, something to fight for.. you'll be tricked into believing whatever someone tells you.
Sadly, that's not me.
I'm not fooled for a second, Mercy. You're just singing the same tune that Roxxxie had the other week.. Oh, if only I'd of known this was important, I'd of tried harder. That's your frickin problem..
You're mules..
You have to have the shiney carrot on a stick dangling in front of you to get you up off your ass and motivated to actually do something. Seriously, you said the last time you gave us a whooping was because it was payback.
Yea, well, let me pose this barn burner of a question.
Why did it take you more than a month?
Because you didn't give us any credibility as a threat, until you knew we were not only coming for your titles, but were going to take them from you.
Couldn't stand losing the carrot, could you?
As long as you held the belts, you felt you were scott free. Untouchable. Having them for two months without having to actually defend them, or yourselves as a legitimate team. Just coasting by on matches you consider to be unimportant, because you walked into a situation that was catered for your lackadaisical style and took advantage. Do I blame you for that? No.
What I blame you for is once you shouldered the responsibility of being a measuring stick in the tag team division, you guys completely dropped the ball as bad as FEMA does when there's a Hurricane.
Which, as far as jokes go, is pretty frickin bad.
Not once did anyone hear you mention that Zelda and Crystal fought to make those belts you carry official. Not one word of thanks. Not one iota of gratitude. Just kept spewing out your self love like you actually did something to earn the prestige you were handed.
Never a team before, won't be a team afterwards. I can guarantee that.
That's why you want our careers. Because you want to weasel your way into a cheap win, thinking that our pride would immediately make us say yes and then we'd be in the trap you've weaved. Sadly, we're not stupid.
We've worked too hard to let you cheapen this. Too long we fought to rectify the mistakes that have been made. We have too much pride to risk losing all we've worked for on a technicality.
Because unlike you, we understand that wrestling is not a business of guarantees.
We'll be the first to admit, we're not unbeatable. But it's going to take more than a half assed carrot on a stick to get it done, ladies. That is a damn guarantee.
But you already knew that.
But what do you know Kathy?
Do you know what it will take to reach your dreams? Do you know what you'll have to sacrifice in order to be able to reach the stars? What do you think it will be?
Sleepless nights?
Time away from your loved ones?
Pushing yourself until you nearly break?
Or all of the above?
The sad thing is, you should know already. You have the luxury of spending nights alone waiting for your man to walk in the door, strung out from the road. You've seen the toll it takes on a person. Watched them change, for better or for worse, depending on how the career is going. You saw it all from an outside perspective.
And it has taught you nothing.
All I hear from you is how you despise the way people talk about you and Jake. People throw around terms like undeserving, or paper slash transitional champions as means to insult the pair of you, and you don't like it.
Yet, you've done nothing to dispel it.
You entered into a partnership of convienence with someone you know you can't trust, and you know can't trust you. You made a deal with a self obsessed hag to capture something you really didn't even have to fight for. And now that the chips are on the table and everything is laid bare..
You're afraid.
Not of me, or Rayne, or losing..
You're afraid that you'll be exposed. Afraid that like Jake, you'll be placed into a corner when it's time to put up or shut up, and you'll come up short. And then everyone will label you as fake as you scream that you're not.
But we know better..
You're afraid Rayne will expose you to be a pretend wrestler, who really belongs at home nursing Jakes bruised ego. She will.
You're afraid I'll make sure nobody forgets what happened. That I'll make sure you have a constant reminder of what went down. Oh yeah, I will.
You can try to take our careers.. or our hair.. but what you haven't realized yet, the one fact that takes that whole idea and lights it on fire...
It was never up to you.
We're the unstoppable tag team in the division. We're the force that people don't want to see standing across from them. We're the truth nobody wants to admit. The facts that make people want to run away and cry.
You will be exposed. And not in a way you're used to. Definitely not in a way that will make the finger quotes "fans" care about you. That's a subtle way of saying those guys on the internet.. you know the type.
It took the two of you to beat little Jade Cortez. Who despite being barely knowing which way is up, has more heart, more courage, more fight than either of you. And you both know that.
Two months ago, fifteen minutes were placed on your clock.
The sands have run out..
Have fun chasing that carrot..
Kisses,
Love Ayla.
