I had only just reached the backstage area when I saw her running down the hall way. For a moment, and only a moment, I pictured how we used to be...
"Angel, what the hell do you think your doing?"
I couldn't help but laugh a little at her question. After all this time Shelly was still concerned for my well being.
"I'm finishing what he started."
I tried to walk around her but she stood her ground. She's more confident than I remembered.
"He nearly killed you the last time you two were in a ring together."
"He's going to regret that failure."
"Angel, please don't do this. If you fail, if he beats you-"
A fire burned within me, a fire of rage and hatred fueled by a need for vengeance, for a second, she could see it... It so nearly burned her once...
"I. Will. Not. Fail."
Her eyes searched mine. What she was looking for, I do not know, but she nodded and moved aside.
"For your daughter and your son's sake, I hope you don't... He's a monster, Angel."
This little remark brought a wry smile to my face.
"No, he is a man. A flawed, failed, miserable excuse for a man. I am the monster."
With little more to say to her, I leave.
Hours later I find myself sleepless, staring at a television as it plays a moment very near and dear to my heart over and over again for your viewing pleasure.
"This all began as little more than a fool's errand."
He hoists me high over his head on what was supposed to be the night of my return to the ring...
"And then you made it something more."
He screams "I will break you!" and then attempts to do just that.
"You made it personal."
He failed.
"You saw me as pulling strings for my friends, playing favorites, picking the winners and losers from behind my perceived power... You saw me as some kind of a threat to you and your's."
I can only wonder what he sees now.
"I stepped away from my cushy job as General Manager of nCw to appease you, Lex. I came back to the ring to face you, as you wished. I shed a years worth of ring rust in a single evening and gave you everything that I had to give. And then you beat me."
Unmercifully.
"You earned my respect, my praise. You earned, in at least my eyes, a place among the elite of this company. Then, as if the Death Cage hadn't gone your way, as if some how I had defeated you, you came at me again. Mad that I survived. Angry that I still lived. Determined to end my life along with my career..."
I pause only to remember the pain that shot through my whole body as I lay there, wondering if I had just wrestled my last match...
"For what purpose? Your point had been made, you stood up to Savior X and you defeated him, what more did you have to show, Lex? Who was there left to impress? You had just taken one of the most feared men in the business and broken him over your knee like a play thing and you were upset that I still breathed? Was it arrogance? Incompetence? A need to feed an ego? What made you come down to that ring and try to break me in half for a second time?"
The image on the screen is frozen in time, frozen at the exact moment my life flashed before my eyes.
"I need to know Lex."
A life time of pain and war...
"Because I AM going to bestow my former fate upon you."
A life time of coming back from the brink...
"I'm not going to wrestle you. I'm not going to beat you. I AM going to kill you."
A life time of never knowing when to stay down...
"And I want you to understand the difference. The moment you decided to try to take my life was the moment you signed away the rest of yours. My threats are not idle. They should not fall on deaf ears. Because when I say I am going to do something, unlike your failed attempts to break me..."
"I. Do. It."
I always get up, stronger than before.
"I do hope you had fun toying with my former brother in law. Was your feud quite satisfying, Lex? A feud that saw you exposed as little more than a melodrama played out with face paint and heavy metal music?"
I can't help but scoff at the ridiculousness of it.
"You better have enjoyed yourself, because that little haphazard feud will be the LAST thing Lex Sense will have done in this company that will mean anything. From this moment forward you are literally a dead man walking. So I do hope your quest to pretend to find the humanity buried within yourself along with failing to protect the one's you love from someone crazy enough to harm them while frantically lashing out at everyone around you because you were unable to put down a single arrogant prick with a smile was well worth your time. It must be ever so satisfying to know that you have failed at every major hurdle life has presented you with."
"You failed as brother."
"As a husband."
"As a father."
"As a wrestler."
"And as a man."
"And now I stand before you, unbroken, undeterred and more determined than ever to see your face bloody and broken below my boot."
The image in my head is most satisfying.
"I don't want to expose your humanity like Rob did. I don't care to see the softer side of Sense. Your family means nothing to me in this war Lex, because the only thing I want, the only thing I see every time I close my eyes..."
I inhale deeply and look dead on into the camera, into his eyes so he can see how serious I am.
"Is your lifeless body..."
The frozen image of my would be world breaker dissolves and leaves us with an image of Lex blabbering like a baby to the woman who he once claimed to love. How pathetic.
"Your bloody reign in nCw is coming to a close Lex. The Savior has returned. The only question that remains is, who is worth saving?"
I can feel them all looking, waiting, hoping for an answer...
"Not a single damn one of you... Lex's reign ends... My reign begins. I would like to welcome you to the beginning. To the Age of X."
May God have Mercy...
"My vengeance will burn red hot like a flame and burn this place clean of the ignorant and arrogant fools who now roam it's halls, beginning, but not ending, with you Lex. For me, this has become more than just another match or another feud. You have challenged me in a way no man has done before. You have sought to end my career, to see Savior X broken, beaten and dead. Never before as any man dared to test me. Never before as any man been foolish enough to push me. Until now."
Only a fool would be proud of such a thing.
"And now I see a man who once faced with the reality that is his life is nothing more than a clown. A joke. A jester dancing for the kings and queens in the crowd."
If only he could see what I see.
"You hide your face to hide your shame and dance like a circus freak in front of the crowd, giving them what you think they want to see. A villain. The only problem is, that is not what you are. Buried deep within is a man who just wants to be accepted, appreciated, loved. A man who sees Steve Awesome and Rob Diamond and secretly desires that while claiming to want to destroy them. A man who pretends to be something that he is not simply because he regrets the things he has done."
I can only shake my head.
"You've said it a million times. You are not a monster. You are only a man. I know this, Lex... Because I am the monster. You tried to kill me... And now... You will pay... For your failure... I do not regret the path my life has taken. I do not regret the things I have done. I do not care about the pain I have caused, the life's I have ruined or the blood that has been shed. The only thing I care about is being there as you exhale your last breath."
I can feel my lips begin to curl into a sneer.
"This match will only be the beginning of a greater hell for you, Lex. I will not stop until you are DEAD."
Heh... The end.
"Angel, what the hell do you think your doing?"
