We open up with Doc's younger sister, Jennie, opening Doc's front door and entering the house. She stops dead in the hallway, holds her nose in disgust and looks around. Clothes thrown everywhere. Stacks and stacks of take-away boxes piled up one another, but dwarfed only by the pyramid of dishes in the sink.
She shakes her head in disbelief, fear gripping her for a second.
He couldn't be back on..
She walks to the end of the hallway, where she stops and looks down at Doc's bedroom floor. He was in the press-up position, pushing up and down in relentless bursts, not even acknowledging the fact that his sister has entered his house.
"What the hell are you doing?"
Doc is half-way through a press up when he realizes Jennie is in the room, and as he looks up, startled, his wrists buckle and his nose hits the floor. Yup, landing flat on his face.
"What the- where did you come from?"
"What do you mean where did I come from? What the hell happened to your house?"
"Oh... nothing."
Doc sheepishly picks himself up from the floor and checks his nose isn't bleeding as he takes a seat on his bed. His sister takes a seat beside him, putting her arm around his shoulder in a kind of switch from bad cop to good cop.
"Look.. Doc. Whatever's going on here, you need to tell me, ok? I can help you. I'm your sister."
"Help? Why would I need help? I'm fine, good, great even. I just haven't had time to tidy up in a few days, what with this new training regime I've been on."
"Training regime? What training regime?"
Doc is about to answer when he realizes that Jennie has already noticed the page open on his laptop. The title at the top of the page reads "Arms like Arnie in six weeks, guaranteed!". Jennie darts her head round towards Doc, pushing him away from her a little.
"What's gotten in to you? This is ridiculous! You need to stop! Do you want to kill yourself?"
Jennie takes a breath, trying to hold her emotion, but not before Doc can notice and try to make amends.
"Look, Jennie, I'm sorry. I just need to get stronger to hang in there with the best of them, you know? I have to train hard, it's part of my job."
Doc moves to embrace his sister but she pushes him away, now in an angry rage.
"You just don't get it do you? You don't even think about your family in any of this. We're the ones who care about you, you idiot. You're more obsessed than you were before, like you're trying to over-compensate for missing out on 4 months of action. But let me give you a newsflash, Doc. Recovering from a broken neck takes time. So maybe one day you'll wake up and realize that the people who love you don't want you to do this to yourself any more."
Jennie turns away, unable to even look at her older brother.
"Until then, I can't stand here and watch you acting like this."
She storms out before Doc can even reply, leaving him stunned at her outburst. He thought things were getting better.. he had beaten the mental demons that the broken neck had left behind.
But now it looked like he was losing the only family he had left.
It was sad, because he would love his sisters no matter what. But Jennie had always told him that he was stupid for putting his body on the line. It's like his choice of career didn't matter to her. And now, a big hissy fit because of what? Because he was training hard to get back in to shape?
What was he supposed to do, not take his job seriously?
She never understood him, or why he was so obsessed with this business.
To tell you the truth, he didn't really understand the obsession either.
But it existed, and it was what got him out of bed every morning.. with enthusiasm, with passion, with ambition.
To change it would be to tame the lion.
He wouldn't.
Not even if he could.
Let me tell you Seth, calling me by my first name doesn't impress anyone.
I remember your debut in this industry. I remember how you used to come down to the ring, cutting your promos, saying that one day you would be "as great as Doc".
As flattering as it was Seth, I thought you had the potential to be way better than I was. And you know what? You probably should have been.
The Seth Evans of the past used to put more than a split-second's thought in to a promo before he aired it. That last piece of junk you delivered was, again, very flattering. But it was also rushed, forced, and all round sucky. So even though you seem to think that you're a "legitimate threat" to guys like Xander - you lost your chance to be nCw Champion, you lost your shot at the lower tier title - and now you're stuck in limbo brada.
Show some will to turn things around.
You've been using big words, you've been taking a pause in between every line you say. But you've got no real content. No lines that make me think "ohh he totally pwned him there", no emotion in your voice when I hear you speak. So the point is Seth, you need to step your game up. Show me that you actually want to win this match, or don't waste my time at all. I came back to nCw to put on great matches against wrestlers who eat, sleep, and breathe this business. You got to the final of Road to the Gold, man! Where's the hunger, the determination? Are you just giving up because things didn't go you way? Let me tell you something kid. If there's one thing I've learned in all the years of having a bad attitude and complaining about owners, it's that the real champions are the ones who pick themselves up from defeat. If I were you, I would be looking at the Riot next month, and giving this match everything I have with the hope of impressing the people who matter.
But it's up to you Seth. Come down to the ring this Sunday and put in whatever kind of performance you feel like putting in. If you want to give me an easy win, I'll take it. But I know you're better than that. So how about you start taking this match seriously and come out for promo two sounding like a man who's focused on winning at all costs? That's the kind of mentality I want to see in you. That's the kind of hunger you need if you want to make it to the very top. But of course, you don't have to take my advice. You can keep doing what you're doing. Which is sitting on your ass, bitching and moaning every time you lose. So make your decision Seth.
Are you going to be the next Adam Knite, the next Charlie Velez?
Or are you going to let your attitude ruin your career?
After this week, it wont mean a thing to me either way.
