Post Christmas Collision
The shocked faces of the masses greet me backstage as I allow our aging "Sheriff" to "drag" me back to where I belong. He tosses me into the door that leads to his office. I open it and stumble, playing along as it were, it puts a smile on his face to think he can still match me...
"THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!?"
"Wrong with me?"
I tilt my head to the side and smile a sadistic grin.
"Why whatever do you mean Gib?"
"YOU COULD OF KILLED THAT WOMEN!"
"Funny, I don't remember the same level of concern when you put Kristoff Bates family at risk or Steve Awesome's, for that matter. But then you weren't in a position of power, something you've sorely lacked your entire career."
His eyes become tiny little slits in his head as he takes one huge lumbering step toward me.
"This isn't three years ago Angel."
"People keep telling me that yet I continue to look around and see the same old **** still going on."
He sighs, annoyed with me but unsure of what to do. I just keep smiling.
"Look, I get it, your getting older, Lex is on the rise-"
"I am thirty three years old, Gib, hardly the back end of a wrestlers career."
"Granted, but you've been to the top and now it's Lex's tu-"
"There are no turns."
"What?"
"There. Are. No. Turns. I am sick of the mentality running rampant through nCw that everyone gets a turn at the top. You earn it. You earn it through blood! You earn like you did, like I did, like all the real legends of this company did. It is not Lex's turn until he TAKES it."
"Fair enough, but what your doing-"
"Is no different than what Spike Kane did to me."
Gib pauses, I'm sure he can remember what it was like to come up in this business. As much as we like to tell ourselves we are better than our predecessors, nothing has really changed...
"I'm only going to say this once Angel, leave his family out of this. Your match is in seven days, settle then and there and then leave it alone."
The smile never left my face as I walk past Gib and grip the handle of the door.
"That was always my intention sweet prince."
Now
"Is it comforting to lie out of both sides of your mouth?"
The darkness surrounds me but it is not the same as before. This darkness is cold and unruly, like the elements. I stand outside somewhere basking in the night.
"To say from side of your mouth that you will end this legacy and then from other claim you may not win, does that allow you to sleep at night knowing all your bases are covered? Like a gambler at the end of his rope betting on every horse in the field knowing at least one of them has to win? I'm sorry to say this Lex, beating me doesn't mean you win."
Something I was sure I explained, but fine, I'll indulge his ignorance.
"Beating me requires that you sacrifice all you have worked for these past few months and become the very thing you sought to destroy..."
"Me."
"But that doesn't seem to concern you Lex, you seem to be so blinded by wins and losses and what this will mean to your career that it hasn't even occurred to you, as if my words were simply an obstacle to get passed as opposed to the words of warning they are."
"Your funeral... Not mine."
"You think this is about me trying to claw my way back to the top? Lex, I am Savior X, two time former World Champion, if I wanted a World title shot tonight all I'd have to do is ask and it would be mine! I do not need victories over imbecilic morons whose only defense is grumbling the same perverse threats I've heard for five months now!"
"I crush Angel!"
"Angel bad!"
"GRRR!!!!"
My hands clap the slow clap of the unimpressed.
"Congratulations on discovering the wonders of two syllable words, perhaps for your next trick you'll open up your eyes and ears and realize this is not simply a match to further your career but a test of the foundations of your soul. Beating me doesn't open some mythical gate way to the next level of this company. Beating me, truly beating me the way I am demanding you do, will open you up to the monster that you really are."
"You are like me... Un-molded, untouched by the caring hands of someone who knows what lies within..."
Like play-doe in my hands...
"But I will mold you Lex, I will shape you into a man, a monster who can carry this company on his shoulders with or with out the chains of his family holding him down. I will take this outlandish and outright insulting mountain of muscle who can barely string together four coherent sentences without mentioning how he FAILED to break my back and then FAILED to end my career and turn him into someone who needs no words to defeat his foes."
"All you will need is your two hands and the knowledge that nothing will stand in your way."
"Just..."
"Like..."
"Me."
The wind picks up and moves my hair out of my face. I turn and look toward a house, a home, it's shrouded in darkness save for the tiny light shining in the window...
"That is what I want. You make the mistake of thinking I care whether I win or lose. You make the mistake of thinking this 'match' matters to me. I already know I can best you in one on one combat, and you know the same about yourself. For me this isn't about winning or losing, it's about building the future. It's about building a monster. It's about knowing even after this old old body of thirty three years of age is buried in the Earth forever that someone will carry on my legacy..."
"You are Frankenstein's monster..."
"You are my monster..."
"You will be my legacy, Lex Sense, whether you wish to be or not. Either you will stand up and drop the foolish facade of humanity and take up the reigns of my bloody empire or you will burn! The chose is all yours Lex, all you have to do is end my life, not my career, not my legacy, but my still beating heart."
"I want you too, Lex..."
"I need you too..."
"Other wise this will never end. I will never stop. Even if I beat you, bury you, end you, I will move on and find another man whose life I can ruin, another monster to build. I tried with Xander. I tried with Alex. Now I'm trying with you."
"So end me..."
"Bury me..."
"Kill me Lex, stop this heart from beating and take that which could be yours. Take this legacy as your own and shower this company in blood and flame as the Age of X lives on through what could be my greatest creation..."
In the window a tiny face looks out...
"Be my monster..."
She smiles, not knowing any better... So innocent... So full of love...
"Or be another victim..."
A hand pulls her away and that tiny bit of joy I felt disappears with her...
"Either way, there will be no mercy."
And again I am alone in the darkness...
Post Christmas Collision
Shelly was waiting for me outside of Gib's office. Her arms were crossed in front of her and she looked the way I remembered her most... Pissed...
"I'm taking Hayleigh, permanently."
"Shelly-"
"Don't even bother Angel, I don't want to hear it. Alex and I have already contacted our attorney. Hayleigh is already with Alex on her way to an airport. It's over. We're done pretending your sane enough to care for our daughter. Maybe you can fool Tara into believing theirs anything resembling a soul in there but I know better."
I wanted to stop her. I wanted to plead my case. I wanted my daughter... But I knew she was right... Shelly walked and with her went my one true link to the people around me...
Tara and Doc were both in my locker room when I arrived, both wore the same look of seething anger, but beneath Doc's glare was something of a smirk...
"Tara and the kids are coming with me."
"Is that so?"
Doc stepped in front of his sister to protect her from me... I would never hurt Tara...
"Yeah, she is and don't even think about trying to stop me. Your a freaking lunatic Angel, this is a wrestling promotion. We're entertainers and your out there trying to kill someone! Your not fit to be a parent let alone husband to my sister so the kids and Tara are coming with me."
Doc stood before me, his chest pushed out, his chin pointed up, he beamed with pride over this moment... I could snap his neck like a twig if I wanted too... But maybe that was the problem... I wanted too...
"Then take them."
Tara's jaw dropped.
"I'm prepared to die alone..."
She reached out for me, clutched my arm, but I ripped it away...
This was for the best...
This is how it should be...
This is the only way...
That's what I told myself as I drove alone in the darkness. It's what I kept repeating as I pictured the face of my daughter in her window at the Jones house. It's what I told myself when I arrived at Time to Riot...
It's what I'm going to tell myself as I stand across the ring from Lex Sense later this evening. It's what I'll say as he brandishes his casket and continues to spit the insidious lies only an adolescent would believe. It's what I'll say as I tear him apart and use the broken bloody pieces of his body to build something that much more monstrous...
I'm prepared to die alone...
Because in the Age of X...
There is no room for weakness...
So Lex, are you prepared to die alone?
