I smile politely.
“See you start talking and then the world slows down, my mind goes all fuzzy and you seem to talk in slow motion. It gets very annoying. So you’ll have to excuse me if in the twisted plot-holed world of Spike Kane’s life I may forget or misplace some of the finer details of your graphic novel life. I mean really, a kid grows up with a twin brother he never met and is raised by a horrible father who tortures him to make him an uncaring fighting machine.....it sounds amazing,...groundbreaking...it sounds....like a terrible “B” grade movie plot starring Jean Claude Van Damme or Scott Adkins.......”
“But moving on from that I have to clarify my comments of “I don’t get anything from beating you.”. It’s true Spike. I beat you and then what?. You’re gone, retired, I don’t get to flaunt my win over you in your face, everyone knows I already beat you. So honestly what do I get out of this?. You beat me you get to retire to happy land with the knowledge that I’ll be here in NCW angry that I lost....”
“And that’s the end of it isn’t it. I’m not a “nice guy”. Because I went around beating people down just for the sake of it. See Spike you can’t comment on the type of person I am when you’ve been such a sanctimonious ass for the last six months. You’ve been trying to end guys careers and you’ve been stepping on people your entire wrestling life yet I’M not a nice guy?. Yet here you are using the excuse that I’m just standing up to you to feed my ego...”
I smirk and laugh.
“But lets talk about your ego. The ego that you followed out of NCW, the ego that you followed out of XHF and the ego that refused to let you aknlowlege me when I walked in this place. You are a paranoid, egotistical monster who uses his fathers mistakes to justify his own!. But then it’s time to grow up emo kid, it’s time to put away your little mental instabilities and become a man and own your own life.....”
“And for ****s sake put away the little conspiracy theories, like me thinking you are an easy victory. You keep going on about how you’re a hall of famer, a god of xtreme, a former world champion yet you believe I’m stupid enough to underestimate you?. C’mon Spike I know how great you are. I’m not stupid. But then again you need to realise that this isn’t about trying to help you anymore, that ship has sailed, this is about me just beating your ass....”
I fold my arms and shake my head.
“But then again I’m oblivious to everything right?. Because I didn’t mention NCW’s shrink and your stupidity in recording your decent to madness. But I’m an uncaring as right?. I don’t know these things about you or do I not mention them because throwing that stuff in your faxce would be cruel. But hey I’m an uncaring ass and you were such an amazing friend. You called me when my younger died right?...oh you didn’t?.....you called me when I was laying in a hospital when Angel almost crippled me and forced me out of NCW for six months right?...oh wait...you didn’t......but I’m the bad friend....”
“But hey I’m a jerk, I’m a man run by ego, run by my own need for attention. I’m such an asshole. All I want to do is leech off of your legacy, to beat you down, to destroy you so I can say I ended Spike Kane. On Sunday Spike this issue will be over. You and I will get in the ring and we will go at it one on one in your match, in your home away from home. And we will put on a show worthy of your career. See Spike as much as I am disappointed in the person you’ve become I remember the person you were...the friend you were....”
“And not the jerk you have become. But let me tell you something here. Spike you and I are family. And like all family we have problems disagreements, and that’s all this is. After this Sunday, if you beat me or I beat you I will go to shake your hand. I will embrace you and I hope you do the same....”
I nod and look away for a moment.
“You can think what you want about me Spike but I know who I am. I’m a husband, a father, I live my life how I see fit and for my entire career people have done nothing but tell me I’m a horrible person. Yes I have an ego, yes I want to be a big star and will use people to get there. But there are people I care about, people who aren’t just work friends or acquaintances. Todd Williams, Xander Famularo, Trent Helms and yourself, you are people I care about, people I’m friends with......”’
“And the reason why I’m not fighting for the world title has nothing to do with fear. I don’t fear Xander, I don’t fear you. I know damn well I could be a world title contender. But the reasons why I’m not are simple. There’s others ahead of me and I’m busy with you. Xander is defending his title being a true world champion, I’m here against you because that’s where I need to be. I need to be facing you in your final match. I’m a fitting opponent Spike....”
“I’m the one guy who can stand toe to toe with you every single match. I’m the one guy who will never destroy you and will never be destroyed by you. We face each other and it has match of the year written all over it.....”
I smile and fold my arms.
“When you and I face each other Spike I bring out the best in you, the amazing legendary Spike Kane who won the world title. And you bring out the best in me, you make me a better and you make me realise the potential people have always said I have.....”
“Potential. See that’s funny. I have always been told I have the potential to be a world champion and while I have realised that dream in every other company I’ve been in, in NCW I haven’t reached those heights, yet. But after all is said and done with you Spike I may be able to rise to that level. And you Spike, you’ll be retired, and maybe, just maybe that is the best thing for you......to retire.....to be just Michael Kane, the man, not Spike Kane, the god of xtreme.....I hope you get better my friend...and I hope you find the happiness you haven’t been able to find in wrestling...”
