Two weeks prior…
I help lead this wildcat out of my apartment. I can’t take her eyes off her hips, they hypnotize me and had me up all night…but I have to let her go.
Her presence in my house just leaves me uneasy if she wasn’t entertaining me, so I have to let her out of here before I say something stupid.
“So the same time tomorrow?”
I just grunt, and close the door behind her. Lock the door so she can’t come back.
I have this throbbing headache and a ringing in my ear. The swelling in both my knees are terrible; I’ve been noticeably walking with a limp for the past couple of weeks. My ribs hurt, each breath I take hurt worse than the previous. My neck is so stiff that I can barely turn it at times.
I remember a time when I welcomed this pain. When I was younger, the pain is what drove me to be the best, and I wanted to inflict this pain on my opponents each and every week…
But now it’s an unnecessary nuisance.
This industry has taught me many things and without it I wouldn’t be the man I am today. But look at what it’s taken away from me. It’s taken my health, my well being, but it’s also taken my fa-
The phone rings. I don’t look at who’s calling, I pick it up immediately.
“Hello?”
And then I hear Heaven.
“Hi.”
I take a few moments before I respond back. I have to look at my phone to make sure it’s who I really think it is, and then go back to the conversation.
“How’s…how’s everything going?”
“It’s going, I suppose. I’m doing…alright. How are the boys?”
“They’re great, Charlie. They got the package you sent them the other day, the school clothes. Jonathan can’t stop showing off his sneakers to his cousins. Even Vic wants a pair.”
She softly giggles and my heart melts. I hear a bit of hesitation in her voice, but I know this phone call isn’t by mistake.
“That’s great…”
The silence is almost necessary. Neither of us are mad, we’re just speechless.
“So…so I wanted to ask you something. Their first day is Monday, and I’d really love for you to be there to drop them off. Maybe you can come early and we can all have breakfast or something? I mean I know you’re busy and all.”
She’s not here right now, but I know she can see the tears filling up my eyes.
“Yeah, yeah that’d be great. I’d love to see them.”
“Great, we’ve-they’ve missed you a whole lot. Kept thinking about you.”
“Just them?”
“…well Victor too.”
I hear a slight chuckle. I smile back, and it almost hurt.
I haven’t smiled like this in a long time.
“I have to get going now, Annette, have to catch a flight. I’ll call you Sunday to plan everything out?”
“Alright, that sounds like a plan. Are you working this weekend?”
“Yeah, I’ll be on TV. I’ll wave to you and the kids.”
I hang up, knowing that’s what she was going to ask.
Suddenly I don’t feel the pain anymore.
“I’ll be completely honest with you, Davison.
I don’t know anything about you.
I don’t feel like going back and researching stuff, just so I can bring it up and talk about you, and you know why?
Because you’re not even worth it to me.
You’re just a spoke in the wheel, a stepping stone in a long line of stairs. I’ll be honest with you, Davison…
When it’s all said and done people aren’t even going to remember who you are.
Me, on the other hand?
I’m a ****ing legend in this industry.
If you don’t know who I am it’s because you’ve been living under a rock or been force fed this propaganda about me, about how I’m just a jerk who looks out for himself, or how I cheat for everything I’ve earned. How I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth and was handed everything in life? While I was fortunate to grow up in a household that had money stacks bigger than your own house, everything I got, everything I ever won in my career I earned.
And I did it better than everybody else.
But unlike most of these people in this company I see my time is running out. I look at Falcon and I see a poor sap who’s holding on to his last shred of respect, trying to make one last big move on his name even though he knows damn well that he just doesn’t have it anymore. Hell, Spike Kane knew it was over and he took his ball and he just left; unfortunately he left a little too late, as I almost shattered his skull with my boot.
So I’m not going to waste my time on you with a long, drawn out promo. I’m not going to point out your flaws and tell you why you can’t beat me, because I know damn well that even a blind squirrel can find a nut and a lucky wrestler can get the one, two, three. I know this business like the back of my hand, I know every trick they can make. I know everything about you even though I’ve probably botched your name on occasion. I know counters to your counters counter.
I know it all.
And I know damn well that this Saturday night on Trauma we’re going to put on the match and it might not even be the best, hell, with my body the way it is I doubt I could even go five good minutes with anybody anymore.
But I know damn well that you’re going to know my name. I know *** damn well that even if you beat me you will respect me, and I know damn well that everything you think you know about me…
Is a damn lie.
So you know what goes here.
Catchphrase, three words.
Thank Me Later?
Or
The Fire Rises?
How about this new one.
Best of Luck.”
I made sure to wake up especially early for this occasion.
Well, I couldn’t really sleep all night. I was just thinking of what was going to happen, if I said the wrong things or something stupid.
But I have to look good. Respectable, not like I did before. I can’t get mad, I can’t curse. I won’t talk about work unless she asks me.
I just know I’m going to see my family again, and that makes me incredibly happy.
I see my phone vibrate on my counter.
It’s her. Not her. The girl with the hips.
“You wanna play? :*”
I stare at the phone for a bit, and I think about it. Her hips, that is.
