The scene opens with our focus being on a small cell phone, its small square screen flashing as it rings and vibrates insistently, doing its little shaking as it danced on the floor desperate for his attention.
Nicole Calling...
Cyrus Daniels looked at the phone, and it lit up his face in flashes, it hurt his eyes, which had now acclimatised themselves completely to the darkness around him. He made no effort to answer her twenty-seventh call this week, instead he just stared at the incessant little device as it kept persistently cycling through the same small melody of notes over and over and over.
The sound was so familiar, so grating that it had grown offensive to his ears, he wished it would give up, stop trying, stop repeating itself and stop shaking in defiance of his will and desire to be left alone - but it wouldn't...
Nicole Calling...
Nicole Calling...
Nicole Calling...
Nicole Calling...
Nicole Calling...
Nicole Calling...
Nicole Calling...
"G'day mate, you've reached the voicemail of Cyrus Daniels, good call, now leave a message at the tone..."
Nicole didn't even bother, it hadn't worked the first fifteen times she had tried during the week, and yet every time she heard his voice, even through a recorded answering service, her heart still fluttered with the anticipation that maybe she could still save this.
Nicole: "...now leave a message at the tone." Yeah, yeah, why am I bothering with this again?
Kingsley: Because I told you to...
Nicole: And why am I listening to you again?
Kingsley: Because I'm your big brother...and because you love him...
Nicole: And why do I love him?
Kingsley: Ah, now that I can't help you with...
Nicole: And here I thought you had all the answers. It's no use, he's not gonna answer, he doesn't care about me, in fact he's probably having the time of his life screwing Sydney again...he's forgotten about me, maybe its time I did the same...
Kingsley: You can't just give up on him...
Nicole: Why not?
Kingsley: Because he really is a top bloke and I actually think he might be good for you sis, right now he's just confused....he's never given up on me, you just don't know him like I do...
Nicole: Maybe that's the problem...I don't know him at all...
Finally, the phone gave up. It stopped buzzing, it stopped singing and it stopped dancing and pleading for his attention, Cyrus' stubborn resolve had once again won out. The little light winked out and left him once again blanketed in the darkness of his own self-imposed solitary confinement.
What crime have I really committed here? Am I really just punishing myself? Does she really mean that much to me that I feel so damn guilty for betraying her trust in me?
Grow up Cyrus, it was just sex! Nothing more, nothing less! You banged Nicole and it felt good, you banged Sydney and it felt even better! The only real crime here is that you didn't bang them both at the same time! If you want to punish yourself for anything, it should be that?
Maybe I really do love her...
Love doesn't exist mate, look what happened the last time you thought you were in love....the bitch gave you up to the cops without a second thought, she didn't think about how much she loved you, she only thought of you as a criminal. That's all she saw in you, and that's all Nicole sees in you. You're a damn dirty criminal, a thug, and the only woman on the planet that actually appreciates who you really are is Kelly Knite. If you want to pine over something, if you want to lament something it should be the fact that she's already married!
I bet she's really wild in the sack...
Now you're talking! Just imagine all the things we could do to her in here, and nobody would know, nobody could punish us, it would be the perfect crime....
Suddenly the door to his dark room burst open and blinded Cyrus with the light of the world outside. He put his hand over his eyes as they readjusted to the light.
Daniels: Carly? I'm really not hungry right now...
The woman stepped forward. It wasn't Carly Robins as he expected, all week she had been watching over him, bringing him food at regular intervals, and periodically trying to convince him to give Nicole a second chance.
To Cyrus' surprise, it was his boss, Kelly Knite.
Kelly: Daniels? Carly told me I might find you here. I brought you a little snack, hope you like tuna.
Kelly tossed a wrapped tuna and mayonnaise sandwich at him, and he caught it and looked rather confused.
Kelly: Go on then, eat. You've got to keep your strength up for your match on Sunday. I'm depending on you to do the job I hired you to do, and despite what some people might have you believe, I do look out for my employees, I care for their welfare, especially those that do their job and do it well without question.
Despite Cyrus' earlier protest of not being hungry, he unwrapped the sandwich and took a big bite out of it, as the flavour exploded in his mouth he savoured it, and he didn't even like tuna that much - but this was quite possibly the best sandwich he had ever tasted. He swallowed before he answered Kelly.
Daniels: This is crazy, I was just thinking about ya, and now here ya are...
Kelly smiled.
Kelly: I bet you were. I hope you were thinking what a wonderful boss I am , and how grateful you are that I'm giving you another opportuinity at Gib and Simon at Battlegrounds. You and Stephen earned it, consider it my way of saying thanks for showing Sydney such a wonderful time on that date I set up for you. I gotta say you really went above and beyond the call of duty. I wasn't expecting that all, who knew she was such a mindless slut, huh?
Kelly laughs as she finally sits next to Cyrus on the floor, tuucking her knees up to her chest.
Kelly: So tell me, was she any good?
Daniels: I...I don't honestly remember...
Kelly bursts out laughing.
Kelly: Gee, she was THAT memorable huh? I'm sorry...
Kelly looks off to the side and spots one half of the nCw World Tag Team Championships on the floor. She picks it up off the floor and runs a finger over the name-plate:
SIMON DAYE
Kelly: How does it feel to know you're so close to having all of your efforts rewarded? Who says crime doesn't pay? It pays, you just have to wait, be patient....you can do that, can't you Daniels? Of course you can, if there's one thing you know how to do, it's wait. To bide your time. You've waited so long already. Ten years you've waited for this opportunity, an opportunity to redeem yourself, to escape your former life and start afresh...coming to a land where nobody knows your name, nobody knows your history. All they know about you is what little insights you give them. It must be very liberating, you know its funny, you're free in so many ways that you don't even realise...yet so closed off and distant in others. What are you hiding from? What are you afraid of?
Cyrus finishes off the last bite of his sandwich but doesn't answer Kelly, perhaps because he has no answer to give her.
Kelly: You need not hide anymore, you need not be afraid. I've set you free, I've given you a new life, a new opportunity, enjoy it, the American Dream is yours for the taking, you can have whatever you want, I can help you get whatever it is that makes you happy. All I ask in return is that you make me happy by crushing the will of young upstarts like Simon, and old has beens like Gib. Give me that and I'll give you the world...
Daniels: I don't want the world from you Kelly...
Kelly: Then what is it you want? Tell me. Is it Sydney, because if it is, I can arrange it, God knows it amuses the hell out of me everytime I see his poor little heart break over her...
Cyrus looks off to the side, and spots his hunting knife, he picks it up and twirls it in his gloved hand. Cyrus then slowly brings the knife up to Kelly's throat, Kelly is suddenly terrified and frozen in absolute fear for her life.
Kelly: Wha - what are you doing, Daniels?
Daniels: You said I'm free, right? Tell me Kelly, what good is freedom if I'm not free to be as twisted as I want to be?
Kelly: You - you're, right, go ahead, go ahead, do it! DO IT! Commit cold blooded murder, spend the rest of your miserable little life in jail. You have nothing out here anyway, right? I mean who cares about your friend Stephen? Or his sister, Nicole who for whatever reason loves you, we'll see how much she really loves you when you go down for murder...
Cyrus blinks.
Daniels: She loves me?
Kelly: Of course she does, everybody can see it but you apparently....
Daniels: How do you know?
Kelly: Because I'm not blind, I've seen the way she looks at you, the way she was utterly devasted when she found out about you and Sydney...
Cyrus lowers the knife and Kelly breathes a sigh of relief, the ordeal was over, but what happened next shocked them both.
Kelly: Truth be told, I can't help but feel a little jealous over all the attention you've been getting, all the attention I've allowed you to get. I've seen the way you look at me Cyrus...and I'm flattered...
Kelly twirls her wedding band on her finger.
Kelly: I remember when Adam used to look at me that way. I miss it...
Daniels: You mean he doesn't look at you that way anymore?
Kelly shakes her head.
Daniels: Then he is a fool...
Cyrus reaches out and cups Kelly's chin, bringing her face up to look at him, she in turn places a hand softly on his cheek.
Kelly: You are a damn attractive man, Cyrus. So mysterious, it excites me in a way I thought only Adam could. I gave you Sydney because I thought she was what you deserved...but now I see you deserve so much more. I've set you free in all the ways I can, I'm sorry it's not enough to make you happy...
Daniels: Not all the ways. Not yet.
Kelly looks down at her wedding band.
Daniels: I've sacrified so much for you already, I think its only fair you sacrifice something for me...
Kelly: I can't...
Daniels: Can't or won't?
Kelly: What about Adam?
Daniels: What about him? You've said it yourself, he doesn't look at you like I do, he doesn't appreciate what a fine Shiela you are like I do...
Cyrus then takes Kelly's hand in his own, holds the knife in his teeth to free up his other hand and removes her wedding band with such force that it cuts her finger. She winces at the pain, and then tossing the ring aside, Cyrus takes hold of his knife again and cuts the buttons off her white blouse and pulls her in for a forceful kiss, she resists strongly at first, but eventually she gives in, especially as he raises the knife behind her back and she feels the cold steel blade slice through the strap of her black lacy bra, under her open blouse. He rips the blouse from her, and the bra comes away also as he forces her onto her back, he straddles her with a knee either side of her waist and the knife in his teeth.
Daniels: Aren't ya going to scream?
Kelly tries but no sound comes out.
Daniels: Go on call for your husband! Scream for him! ADAM! ADAM! SAVE ME! DO IT, DO IT NOW YOU BITCH OR I'LL CUT YOUR THROAT!
Kelly: ADAM! ADAM! SOMEBODY HELP ME! PLEASE! ADAM! SAVE ME!
Kelly cries and Cyrus revels in it as he cuts her skirt clean off.
Daniels: YES! YES! YES! OH GOD YES! LOUDER! LOUDER!
Kelly: ADAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cyrus laughs as he starts to unzip his pants and thrust into Kelly.
Suddenly the door to his sactuary swings open again, and both he and Kelly turn to look and see Carly Robins stood there with a tray of food.
Carly: CYRUS! CYRUS! OH MY GOD!
Cyrus cellphone is ringing, but he is passed out on the floor.
Stephen Calliing.
Carly quickly grabs her cellphone.
Carly: Hello. I NEED AN AMBULANCE!
Stephen looks frustrated at his own phone.
Kingsley: *** damn voicemail! I give up! If he wants to be an idiot and lose ya, that's his fault!
Stephen and Nicole arrive at the airport and start to unload her bags, and just as Stephen is about to see his sister safely into check in, his phone rings.
Kingsley: CYRUS! CARLY! WAIT, SLOW DOWN, WHAT HAPPENED TO CYRUS!
This stops Nicole dead in her tracks and Stephen goes white.
Kingsley: I'll be right there....
Nicole: What? Has something happened to Cyrus? What? Tell me!
Kingsley: Apparently he's collapsed and unconscious, an ambulance is on its way! I have to go!
Nicole: Hold on I'm coming with you!
Kingsley: Are you sure?
Nicole: Damn it Stephen, I'm a doctor or have you forgotten?
Kingsley: You're right, let's go!
