We open to another day of Xavier and Bishop training. Xavier is on the bench doing some bench press as Bishop spots him. After he finishes his reps, he racks the weights, and as Bishop hands Xavier a towel, he speaks.
Bishop: Is it worth it?
“What?”
Bishop: All this. The late nights and early mornings all the flights, the pree tours, all of this, I mean your return hasn't exactly brought in the fruits of labor.
“So...?”
Bishop: What's the point man? You've proved everything you needed to, you proved that you caoul dstep away and perform, but you still got duties to take care of, you have family that needs ya.
“Don't mind me asking where is all of this coming from?”
Bishop: You've been back for few months and you are still opening shows man, you are int eh sam eplace that you started in, when you made this big move.
“Yeah... that just shows me, that I need to work harder, I need to push myself and really get out there.”
Bishop: Yeah, that is easy to tell yourself, but what about Lis'? What about Eric? I am sure they are tired of getting Xavier 4 or 5 days out of the week.
“Listen... I knew the risks, when I did this, I knew them and I did this fo rme, not for anyone else, I did this beecause I wanted to, and last time I checked you were all behind it... what has changed?”
Bishop: Nothing... that's the problem.
“So I should quit? If I quit because things didn't go my way, I wouldn't of accomplish anything, you have to keep grinding, keep fighting, it is a long road, but when you reach the end of the journey, it's gonna be worht it.”
Bishop: But.. is it worth it to your family. I found Lisa today... the baby kept her up all night, it wasn't just the normal stuff, she cried and cried... she was sick, nothing major, but when I came in to check in on her, she looked at the end of her rope.
“A sleepless night will do that.”
Bishop: Try nights...
Xavier looks back at Bishop
Bishop: Dude... Bro... your wife isn't like all the others, she is a strong woman... to have stuck behind youf or this long, but she isn't on the road with you all the time, she doesn't train in the gym, she wants to do her own thing. And she wants to know when... she can.
“What do you mean, 'her own thing'?”
Bishop: Dunno man, that is what she said to me, when I came in yesterday. She's tired of you playing part-time dad.
“Listen... I know this hans't gone the way I planned it, I see that, I understand that. But me quitting now... would make all that work I put in, mean nothing. All the training just to get back into ring shape, will have been for nothing. I understand that she hates this, and I wish I could do better, but this is one of those things... that... I gotta do it.”
Bishop: I know it, kid. I told her, I see it in your eyes, but...
“But nothing. It's gonna happen. And it will pay off, I out in way too much for it to not pay off in the end, but I need you guys to have my back, I need your guys on my side, you're family”
Bishop: You know I got your back Cuz... and although she may not seem like it now, Lisa has yours.. but sometime man. Show you have her back, too.
Xavier just sits down on the bench press, and kinda gazes off, letting Bishop's words sink in. He nods, he gets up off the bench an makes his way into his office, as he reaches into his pocket and pulls out his cell phone, he closes the door behind him.
And we fade out.
========================================
“What can I say?
What more could I possibly say, I said it, I wen tout there and did it, and chalk Kanyon off the list... twice. And in the running theme of doing things twice, me and Lazlo.. again, we will lock horns, see who is the better man, this time around. Last time, you got the better of me, I gave you your props, you ere he hungry young lion and you beat me
No shame in saying that. But this time, I get a chance to get my win back, this time I get a 2nd crack at you. And not much has changed since then... we are pretty much the same people from last time, so in terms of gameplan, it's come at you at another angle, try a new plan of attack. Well... wait... something has changed since the last time we faced.. you're coming in lighter...
Give or take 10 pounds or so lighter?”
Xavier cracks a little grin
“Instead of walking in the glorious champion, you are coming in, maybe a little bit humbled, then again, maybe not... it's not much job to follow you. I save that for the fiml studies, I save for when I look back at our past match and see where I made the mistake.
I can stare at that tape, a millions times, until the tape explodes and I might never find that mistake, but I will be watching, searching, training, this week I've kept it quiet, kept my cards close, didn't want to be the guy out there making the noise, rattling the cages. See this PPV is full of guys like hat, you got your hate feuds here, you got a blood rivalry there, you have last two Mrs. Brad Kanes facing off, so there is a lot of... interesting angles going into this PPV. So why us?
Why you and me?
You see even though you had some bumps here and there, you are on the rise, you are building your stock, took some lumps here and there, but that is the business. That is what makes this business what it is, you will have thos enights, where you will get beat up, get broken down, everyone will try to break you spiritually or mentally, it's all about taking that next step. And you are right there with them. So awith all that... why me?
My month hasn't been all that impressive, I can't lie, so why now?
Give the people a match worth talking about?
If that is it... then that is good enough for me. You see I saw it last week, when you walked out there and defeated Everyman and Verona. And impressive display, and I see it in you. I see that fire, I see that want... the desire to reach up and grab the brass ring, but you see... you fly too close to the sun, you fall.
Sounds corny but it's true. What is gonna hurt you more, clamoring for that chance, that shot at redemption or whatever ou feel you are entitled to, and then losing it, or losing to me? Regular ol' Xavier. You see Lazlo, I'm nowhere new to the game, I'm not some wet behind the ears kid, I see whatsup, and I know what someone like you thinks, when you step intot he ring with someone like me, 'He's nothing', 'He's not like he used to be', 'He not a champion' etc. and while you bang your chest demanding a tougher challengem you wont see it coming up on you... you wont see it coming than
BAM!
One. Two. Three.
You're counting the lights, one kick, one elbow, one slam is all I need, and I get it, then its over for you. Then what happens to the bragging and boasting now? Why should Mike get a chance now... he couldn't even beat Xavier.
And now the story changes a bit, the narrative starts to evolve, it's more than just a match to get the fans hyped. It's more than a match to fill up time. Now I become that roadblock, I become that guy, who can stop your progress... in one night, that is how fast it can turn here. And thinking about that...
Letting that sink in, sitting back... I dig it. Because I know, when you see that, when that clicks in your head, you will come at me, tougher, harder, faster, you will bring better than your best, you see there are no fillers in wrestling, because it only takes one fall... one submission and it can all go bad. And then we see who's really driven. See who really has it.
Get up from getting knocked down, and I can testify to that, I've been knocked down, plenty of times, and gotten up, but you see Mike you're on the fast track, you are on the rise,, you're stock is worth millions and then in one fell swoop... it starts to bottom out.
It might seem like I am blowing this out or proportion and maybe I am, mabe I am just saying this to be an asshole, just to **** with you, why?
Because I can.
But look around you, how many people do you see here, are always just a fingertip away from greatness, always one step away from glory. And can never get over that hump. You had a chance to put nCw on notice, you had a chance to show us what Lazlo was all about, and you put up a hell of a fight, you showed out... you brought your A-game, but you didn't win.
You lost, and that is the thing that people will remember. And you are on the outside looking in. And for someone who proclaims themselves to be the BEST! You can come up short like that in crunch time. In order to be considered the BEST you can't take nights off, you an think this is an easy win, and you are already writing your victory speech and getting ready to move to the next one, but if you want to show you are the BEST, bring you all, you see I want to beat you, to show you aren't the best... not yet, you will get there, but you aren't close to that level.
You'll be there one day, and you'll see me again, either trying to take something from you or your from me... that is how it goes in this nutty world.
Just when you think you're down... you get that lucky shot and you are back on your feet, and maybe this week, will be mine, I guess we will find out at the same time."
Bishop: Is it worth it?
“What?”
Bishop: All this. The late nights and early mornings all the flights, the pree tours, all of this, I mean your return hasn't exactly brought in the fruits of labor.
