We open up inside the living room of the Steve Awesome home. Chad Lights sits in a recliner chair, poised with his index cards ready to do a new interview. Steve Awesome sits upright on his sofa and next to him sat Mandy Matthews, his arm around her. And barely a foot away from them was a pink bassinet that contained there new bundle of joy.
Chad Lights: I’d like to start off by thanking you Steve for allowing me into your home. I know you were reluctant to speak at first, so it feels like a big honor for me to be the one allowed to come here and get your thoughts.
Steve smiles and shakes it off like it isn’t that big of a deal.
Steve Awesome: It’s my pleasure Chad. Welcome to the Awesome abode. I know it’s kind of funny after all those years demanding the spotlight for me to suddenly want all this privacy. But I have a family now. I know that’s weird to hear from me, but I don‘t want them to have to deal with that crazy lifestyle.”
Chad smiles and nods.
Chad Lights: That’s perfectly understandable Steve. It shows a certain level of maturity that maybe the world hadn’t seen before from you. In fact I think it’s safe to say a lot has changed for you in past few months.”
It’s pretty safe bet. Steve does seem a lot different He’s traded in the tight jeans and the skinny t’s For a pear of sweat pants and an old Tiger’s t-shirt. His hair pulled back and out of the way and the aviator shades were nowhere to be found.
Steve Awesome: I’ll say. One minute I go from running the starlets division while I rehab a shoulder injury, the next thing I know I’m a father. It’s a pretty big step.
Chad Lights: How did all this come about? I mean, it all happened so fast I’m not sure if our fans really caught on to everything that went on. Could you explain it a little better for the people watching?
Steve Awesome: Well, Mandi and I had always been banging on and off throughout my whole career. Even while I was dating Crystal, she just couldn’t get enough of me.”
Steve chuckles and Mandi shoots him a quick glance.
Mandi Matthews: …then it happened. And I was nervous to tell him because let’s face it….he has a track record of being a complete butt face about things like this.
Steve gets a little indignant.
Steve Awesome: What!? I….yeah your right.
He lowers his head and Mandi continues.
Mandi Matthews: I didn’t know how to tell him. So I didn’t. Until it was time to have the baby. The hospital called him, he came right to where I was and he stayed there with me the whole time Kristen was being born.
They hold each others hand.
Steve Awesome: The moment I saw Kristen for the first time I was instantly in love. It was literally the kick in the behind that I needed. I loved Mandi. I had from the beginning of my wrestling career. Even before that when we were in high school together. Now she is the mother of my child, she my baby mama, and now were a family.”
Mandi Matthews: Everything just sort of fell into place for us. But then……Battlegrounds happened….
The two go silent for a few moments.
Chad Lights: I suppose calling it a bad day would be an understatement….
Steve flashes a small glimpse of a grin. He always appreciated some dark humor, even if it was at his expense.
Steve Awesome: You know…..the whole losing my job part wasn’t all that bad….the most I was thinking was I’d get to spend more time with my new family. Be a father to my daughter….or at least be the best one I could be…..I knew I could always come back to the ring if I wanted too……Jake was on my case about Kathy and I felt real bad about her ankle…and I remember walking out to the parking lot and then….boom lights out.”
Chad Lights: The paramedics said you were unconscious when the found you. They say you were probably knocked out from the impact of your head hitting the pavement.
Steve Awesome: Yeah, I don’t remember anything else really. All I know is, whoever did this, wanted to hit me hard! And they pulled it off.
All of a sudden Kristen starts to cry and both parents make the jump for there small infant daughter but only one of them actually made it the twelve inches necessary. Mandi checks on her daughter while Steve tenses up on the couch and seethes in pain. He holds his back and looks like he’s under a lot of pain. He breathes deep a few times and finally seems to calm down. Once his vision goes back to normal he spots Mandi comforting his baby and Chad looking on at the “Face of the Franchise” barely able to move.
Steve Awesome: Because now, as you can see, I can’t even take care of my own daughter, let alone wrestle in a ring. My back is so messed up if I jerk it wrong pain shoots up and down my spine. Whoever, or whatever hit me at Battlegrounds, hit me so hard they herniated a disk in my back and the bone spurs are sitting on top of my spine.
Mandi comes back and sits next to Steve.
Mandi Matthews: You okay baby?
Steve nods his head.
Steve Awesome: Yes.
She carefully hugs him.
Chad Lights: So what does this mean? Is there an operation that can fix this?
Steve sighs and lowers his head.
Steve Awesome: Yeah there is. I can get the surgery and I’ll be free of the pain and I’ll be able to move around better. Who knows I may even get back in the ring some day…..but of course there’s another possibility….
Steve and Mandi get quite again.
Steve Awesome: the surgery could go wrong…..they could hit my spine wrong and I could wind up in a wheelchair for the rest of my life.
Steve squeezes Mandi’s hand, obviously terrified of that outcome.
Chad Lights: Well….what are you going to do?
Steve just stares at Chad.
Steve Awesome: I have no freaking idea Chad. What would you do? Live in pain or live in a wheelchair for the rest of your life? Seems like a pretty crappy scenario to me. So all I’m going to do is sit here with my family, and love them till I decide what’s right. But I will say this…..whoever did this….whoever decided they needed to eliminate me from the wrestling world forever…..all I ever wanted in this world was a family. To be the father my dad wasn’t, to leave the wrestling world behind and live happily ever after…..
Steve glares into the camera.
Steve Awesome: But you wrecked it….you took that all away from me. You ended my career and changed my life forever. Why I don’t know, but it better be a damn good reason! All I can say to you is that I truly prey, from deep within my heart, that God has mercy on your soul….because if I ever find out who you are…
He holds the glare.
…I won’t.
Fade out on his passionate glare.
Chad Lights: I’d like to start off by thanking you Steve for allowing me into your home. I know you were reluctant to speak at first, so it feels like a big honor for me to be the one allowed to come here and get your thoughts.
