AJ inspired me to write reviews for old wrestling shows, and Adam chose this one for my first taste of torture of just terrible shows.
Once I'm done with this, please feel free to send me another show so I can write a review of it with my comedy stylings.
On with the review!
Match Card:
Black Top Bully vs. Dustin Rhodes (King of the Road match)
"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. Meng (Martial Arts Match)
Johnny B. Badd vs. Arn Anderson (Boxer vs. Wrestler match)
"Macho Man" Randy Savage vs. Avalanche (No DQ match)
Sting vs. "Big" Bubba Rogers (Anything Goes match)
The Nasty Boys vs. Harlem Heat (Texas Tornado match)
WCW World Champion Hulk Hogan vs. Vader (Strap Match)
Match 1:Black Top Bully vs. Dustin Rhodes (King of the Road match)
Imagine if you will, an 18-wheeler truck with openings to see inside, filled with hay bails. The only way to win, is to climb the scaffolding and honk the goofy sounding horn. Mind you, the truck will be in motion the whole time (sort of). The match is already underway, and we get 3 different camera angles, one from the back of the truck cab, one from the WCW helicopter, and one from a truck driving on the wrong side of the road. WCW must have had to pay the city some big bucks in order to close off about 10-15 miles worth of road. Anyway, describing this match is difficult because it's a lot of these two trying to hit each other with hay bails and troths. Why a troth is in the truck is beyond me. They just brawl and occasionally hit wrestling moves like a back suplex and piledriver. Also from time to time the WCW Helicopter isn't looking at the speeding truck. So you get to see some sights of Tupelo, Mississippi, Birthplace of Elvis Presley. The truck makes a couple of turns, runs a stop sign, and eventually has to stop for a church bus. Eventually they're both on the scaffold and Bully pokes Dustin in the eye, he falls and Bully honks the horn to win.
Winner: Black top Bully
Rating: DUD
This match is so silly, and the Bobby Heenan is simply making jokes the whole time. It's hard to see anything, and they used exactly ONE shot from the truck on the wrong side of the road. Great work fellas.
Segment: Col. Tom Parker, Meng, Arn Anderson interview
Tenay interviews the three, with Parker declaring that his guys will all win tonight. It takes about 4 minutes to say it, But that's what he means.
Match #2: "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. Meng (Martial Arts Match)
What is this? Schivone and Heenan try to explain the rules, but they don't know either. Sonny Onoo, who later would manage Japanese wrestlers Ultimo Dragon, Yuji Nagata and then Ernest Miller is the ref. He's decked in a Karate Gi. Meng just wears tights, and Duggan is dressed like Ray Jackson from Bloodsport. It should also be pointed out that Meng knows "martial arts" and Duggan does not. Also "Martial Arts" is a vague term because this is 1995 and MMA isn't big, so the common man knows nothing about the different styles. Trying to start this match is a problem since Duggan refuses to bow to the ref or to his opponent, common in Contact Karate matches. Is this the Karate Kid now? Are we going on points? No one knows. Duggan starts a "USA" chant, completely disrespecting Sonny Onoo. Eventually, Duggan bows to Onoo, and then proceeds to start another "USA" chant. Finally, they bow to each other and then Meng kicks Duggan in the face. Is that a point for Meng? Whatever. This just turns into a brawl with Meng just beating up Duggan and applying a nerve hold every now and again. Also, tonight's running story is that Jimmy Hart is missing, presumed eaten by Vader. During the course of this, Duggan removes both of his shoes, and tears off his shirt. Why, I do not know. Duggan hits the clothesline and celebrates but Parker jumps on the apron. Duggan proceeds to punch him a few times before Onoo objects. Meng kicks Duggan in the face again and pins him and Onoo just kinda swipes at the air for his count.
Winner Meng via Silent Pinfall
Rating: DUD
This match is just...bad. No one explained the rules, they just threw it together. This was Meng's wrestling Debut by the way. Terrible.
Segment: Johnny B Badd promo.
Badd promises to win. Because he's a BAAAD MAN!
Badd/Arn hype video
A nice video displaying that Arn is constantly getting one over on Badd. Arn is also TV champion. He gets his own little segment here talking about his truck and he much of a bad-ass he is. Because...he is.
Match #3:Johnny B. Badd vs. Arn Anderson (Boxer vs. Wrestler match)
The "rules" are there are 10 3 minute rounds, 1 minute rest in between. Arn can only win via pinfall or submission and Badd can only win via KO, which is pretty unfair. And again, since MMA isn't huge at this point, it's not as silly as it would be now, since Badd is wearing boxing gloves on both hands. In reality, Arn would simply take Badd down over and over and beat him silly. Anyway, round 1 Badd simply beats the tar out of Arn with jabs and body punches. He corners Arn and wails on him. Every time Arn tries a takedown attempt, he gets blasted. Round 2 is more of the same, as Badd just picks his punches as Arn cannot get in close enough to attack. Arn is knocked down 2-3 times, but there's no TKO rule in effect. Arn goes down at the end of the round but is saved by the bell. Arn gets up and cheap shots Badd as he's walking back to his corner. Again, we are reminded that Jimmy Hart is not in the arena. Arn then starts round 3 early as he attack Badd during the rest period. He shouts "No DQ, Right?" to which the ref shrugs. Heenan: "Well, it's Uncensored." Arn controls most of round 3, and almost wins when he DDT's Badd, but Badd's trainer saves him. Badd makes a small comeback at the end of the round. Round 4 starts early again as Arn attacks Badd during the rest period. Or...is there even a rest period? who knows! Badd's trainer cuts Badd's left glove off, then attacks Arn with a spit bucket, then Badd removes the glove (!?) and clocks Arn (somehow) knocking him out.
Winner: Johnny B. Badd Via KO (R4)
Rating 4/10
It was pretty silly, but Johnny and Arn did their best. The rules were dumb, it didn't matter in the end, and Badd entertained the crowd.
Segment: Randy Savage Hype video
A hype video for Randy Savage. Because he's only been with the company and on TV for 3 months. He's new here.
Segment: Randy Savage Promo:
Macho hypes the match and uses catch phrases. Then he says "I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING RIGHT NOW! I'LL KNOCK YOU OUT! GET THAT SMILE OFF YOUR FACE RIGHT NOW! I'LL TAKE ANYBODY OUT ON THE WAY! NO MORE MR. NICE GUY, BROTHER! I'M OUTTA HERE! SEE YA LATER!"
Match #4: "Macho Man" Randy Savage vs. Avalanche (No DQ match)[/u]
Savage attacks Avalanche before the bell, wrestling straight from the book of Hogan. Jabs and Eyerakes galore. Savage eventually tries to bodyslam Avalanche but fails. Avalanche's moveset consists of slams, elbow drops, and posing which makes this match slow and painful. Avalanche is in control for a while then misses a splash from the second rope. Savage continues to punch him, then attacks him on the floor. Then, an unknown woman jumps the guardrail and attacks Savage. Then the women enters the ring and reveals herself to be....Ric Flair in drag. Wow. Flair and Avalanche beat up Savage as the referee....calls for a DQ. In a no-DQ match....whatever. Hogan runs down and makes the save.
Winner Randy Savage via DQ.
Rating 3/10
Slow. Painful. Uneventful. Boring. It's sad that this is a Randy Savage match. Flair is drag was...yeah.
Segment: Harlem Heat promo
Stevie Ray speaks in black man cleche's and Booker says they will beat the Nasty Boys and calls Tupelo a "redneck town" Also he says Harlem Heat will turn up the heat to "1000 Harlem Heat Degrees" I am unsure if this is an actual measurement of heat. Sherri promises to shake her ass.
Segment:Sting/Big Bubba hype video:[/b]
Bubba blames Sting for Bubba losing to Vader...And then changes his name from The Guardian Angel to Big Bubba. Whatever.
Segment: Sting promo
Sting hypes the match. He also has no idea that Mike Tenay works for WCW. Also, in case you have never seen WCW, Sting introduces himself.
Match #5 Sting vs. "Big" Bubba Rogers (Anything Goes match)
Bubba sticks his finger in Sting's face, so Sting bites it. What? Sting then steals Bubba's hat and leg drops it. What a jerk. Sting beats up Bubba until Sting injures his leg doing a leapfrog. Interesting. Psychology in an "anything goes" match. Schivone reminds us that back in 1991, Sting blew out that same knee. Because that's relevant. Heenan makes a series of "one legged man" jokes. For about 5 minutes Bubba is in control working the knee. Bubba falls off the top rope and Sting applies a sleeper, but it doesn't last long as Bubba breaks it. Sting goes for a body slam but falls and Bubba pins him for the 3.
Winner Big Bubba Rogers via pinfall
Rating 5/10
Decent match, but a weak ending and a lack of "plunder" as Dusty would say. For a match where "anything goes", it really was just a wrestling match.
Match #6: The Nasty Boys vs. Harlem Heat (Texas Tornado match)
Harlem Heat jump the Nastys before the bell, but it's Uncensored! anything goes! This is simply a wild brawl. Including where Sags just decides that he is no longer selling anything after about 5 minutes. Sherri gets a pit stop which is pretty comical. Harlem Heat and The Nasty's eventually fight to a refreshment stand and they slip and slide all over the place because the sodas spilled. They in this one area, greatly increasing their risk of injury for a while, before Knobbs slams Booker on a refreshment stand and pins him and the camera doesn't bother to catch it. The replay shows Booker actually kicked out, but at least it's over.
Winners: The Nasty Boys via pinfall
Rating 3/10
It's a Nasty Boys match. I mean seriously, Sags refused to sell and Harlem Heat and Sherri almost died about 10 times slipping around on the floor.
Segment: Vader promo
Vader says that he will destroy Hogan and I believe him. He says between he and Flair, there's 23 world titles. I think his math is off, but I'm not about to say anything. Flair jumps in, still wearing mascara from earlier. Yes, he went to the trouble of applying mascara for his 30 second cross-dressing. Flair says he hates Hogan and Vader and he share a "whoo"
Segment: Vader/Hogan hype video.
They show the post-match Superbrawl stuff, then Hogan sneak attacking Vader during one of his matches. You'd think Vader was the face in this match.
Segment: Hogan Promo
You've seen one, you've see 'em all.
Match #7: WCW World Champion Hulk Hogan vs. Vader (Strap Match)
This match is non-title, by the way. Also, Vader is the U.S. Champ. Also, Jimmy Hart: Still missing. Who cares? No one. But anyway Hogan enters alone, and everyone wonders where the Renegade is. I would have to assume that the Warrior was SUPPOSED to be this guy, since Hogan routinely called him the "Ultimate" surprise. But instead, they chose some goof who KIND OF looks like him. Because WCW thinks you're stupid. Anyway, this goofball hits the ring and hits the ropes, then he stalks Flair up the aisle before catching a punch and....doing nothing. Meanwhile, Hogan sneak attacks Vader (of course) jump-starting the match. They fight and Flair runs right back down the ring, so he can interfere. Exactly what Renegade is there to prevent. So the Renegade sucks at his job. Flair interferes despite this, and Renegade again chases him away. Hogan continues to beat the tar out of Vader, But Flair again soon returns. and Vader gains the edge. The point of a strap match is to touch all four corners in sucession, but neither Hogan or Vader seem interested in winning. Jimmy Hart comes running down, and...I still don't care. Hogan blasts Vader with a chair and for the 100000th time Schivone says "It's Uncensored!" Outside of about 3 minutes, this match (unsurprisingly) has been all Hogan. It's at the 15 minute mark than anyone tries to actually win the match. Hogan, afterhulking up after no selling a suplex hits the leg on Vader and tries to drag him to the corners. Mind you, there is no referee for this match. Hogan touches three, then a masked man comes out and blasts Renegade with a chair. Then, as quick as that, the masked man is gone. Flair comes in and He and Vader beat up Hogan. Vader drags Hogan to three corners before Flair tells him to splash Hogan from the ropes. Vader does, but just kinda...rolls and sells it like death. Flair drags Vader out of the ring and unhooks Vader from the strap, before grabbing a wooden chair and bashing Hogan...which Hogan (obviously) no-sells. He hulks up, punches Flair, attaches Flair to the strap and drags him to all four corners....This...by all logic...should not count for anything...but...it does. Hogan (somehow) wins the match, but Vader attacks. Hogan makes his own save, then the masked man returns! Then, a tied up Arn Anderson waddles out, and the masked man in the ring attacks Flair! It's Savage! Why Arn came out in a mask is already confusing, then he just runs to the back, just so they can switch. Whatever. Hogan poses despite not actually winning the match. Show's over folks.
Winner: ....Hogan?
Rating 3/10
This match was Hogan beating up Vader for about 10-15 minutes before beating the wrong man in the match. The Renegade did nothing but walk around like a spaz and do a shotty Warrior impression. Also, WCW seems to have some strange fetishes. Jimmy Hart, Arn Anderson were both tied up. Duggan, and Flair were nearly stripped naked, and Flair dressed in drag.
Overall PPV Rating 2/10
This show is just awful. No one knew rules the matches, they were either ignored or broken when there were rules, and the main event was a cluster of poop. Did you know this was Uncensored?!
So there's one down, so if you want another review, someone can pick one. As long as I can either watch it somewhere on the internet or actually own the show on DVD, I can review it. For TNA purposes, Please do not suggest anything recent, I want to stick between 2002-2006/2006 if I could. Other than that, Any WCW, ECW, or WWE event is on the table.
Once I'm done with this, please feel free to send me another show so I can write a review of it with my comedy stylings.
