I sit at the bar leading into my kitchen, with my left hand wrapped around a cup of water and my right hand brushing my own hair back as I stare blankly into the liquid. The truth is that I didn't really know what to think... Ever since I returned to the ring, I've had only one title on my mind; the National Championship. What could I say about the X Championship? Or the chance to win the X Championship? I take a deep breath before I hear the sound of the door slamming to break the silence. Without hesitation, I lift my head to see that Kiela had come by but even she looked to be a little stressed from her own current situations... I force a smile, and acknowledge her presence.
Seth:
"How was work?"
She walks closer to me, and she forces a smile of her own. I could see right through it, but I also knew that it wasn't me at fault for her stress... as she got closer, I took a sip of my water before offering it up to her, while wrapping my arm around her waist to bring her closer to me.
Kiela:
"It was good."
She rejected the water, so I just sat the cup back down on the counter.
Seth:
"What's on your mind?"
Kiela:
"Christmas vacation is almost over. I have to get my books for school..."
Knowing how serious she was when it came to her school work, I couldn't keep myself from letting out a faint chuckle. My eyes shifted away from her to look back at the counter, and I could feel her eyes piercing through me.
Kiela:
"What's up with you?"
Seth:
"Just thinking."
Kiela:
"About?"
Her arms wrapped around me, and I felt more secure.
Seth:
"Well, I've been wanting to prove to nCw that I deserve a chance at the National title... And they feel that I did earn a chance to be a contender for a title. But the X Championship."
I looked up at her, and I could see the confusion on her face.
Kiela:
"The... 'X'... Championship?"
I nod my head.
Kiela:
"Why would you want an 'X' Championship? That's bullsh*t that they don't feel you're good enough for a title."
I'm confused by that. I quickly raise my voice in protest to try and defend them.
Seth:
"No, no. They are giving me a shot to become the number one contender, for the X title."
Kiela:
"Exactly! An 'X' title! If it's not a title anymore, why the hell do you want it? Why the hell would they want to give you a shot at it?"
Seth:
"No! It's not an 'ex' title, it's THE 'X' title!"
Kiela:
"You're not making any sense."
She takes a step back from me, and I shrug my shoulders...
Seth:
"What aren't you getting? It's THE 'X' Championship!"
Kiela:
"There you go, again."
The fact that she doesn't seem to understand what I'm trying to tell her forces me to laugh under my breath, and I take her hands to pull her back to me. My eyes look up into hers, but I feel that my smile is no longer forced --- it's there. Because of her.
Seth:
"Listen, baby. It's not an 'ex' championship... I mean, you could view it as an 'ex' championship. It was formerly the X-Division and the Honor Championship. But they merged the two belts together to create the 'X' Championship. It's a title."
Kiela:
"Oooh!"
Seth:
"...and you're the college girl?"
Kiela:
"Shut up!"
She smirks at me, and draws her hand back to smack me on the arm.
Kiela:
"I'm on vacation. I'm not required to think about these things."
I shake my head but still smile at her.
Kiela:
"Well...?"
By the tone of her voice, I could tell that she was wondering about something.
Seth:
"Well...? What?"
Kiela:
"Are you going to win?"
As if this question had to really be asked.
Seth:
"You're damn right."
Kiela:
"Good. We'll have an excuse to go out for a fancy dinner."
She gives me a quick hug but almost immediately lets me go and rushes into the kitchen while unbuttoning her work shirt... I get up from my chair and walk with her into the kitchen while also giving a gesture to the camera to tell them to shut it off.
Kiela:
"What's for lunch?"
I absolutely couldn't hide it from anyone... I've been speaking about it since I returned to nCw --- The X Championship was not a championship that I was exactly interested in. There was only one title that was on my mind, and that was the one being held by The Ace. The National Championship. However, I will take what I can get. If this is what the bone they want to throw for me, it's the one that I'm going to chew.
There's a catch, though. I don't want The Ace, or even Andrew Jacobsen to think for one moment that my mind isn't drifting onto the belt that they're going to wage war over this Sunday... That's the step I'm aiming for, and that's the step I'm going to get to.
To another extent; I don't want Xavier Williams, Dexter Davis, or even my good friend --- Alex Jones --- to think that I'm going to ignore the X Championship just because "it's not the one that I wanted". It's a lesson. Much like the one that I learned a long time ago and has been paying off for me. You can't win them all; just like you can't always get what you want. This was the perfect scenario where I didn't get what I wanted, but I'll live with it. It's going to help me get where I want to go.
I know, I know. I shouldn't be getting too ahead of myself. I've told people that I'm willing to scratch and claw my way to the top from the very bottom, and while it's not an insult to say... out of three tiers, this is the title located on the third tier. It is, in fact, a title that I've never held --- I have held a title within the title, but never the title.
I had my opportunity.
Over one year ago, it was after I was eliminated from the Road To The Gold tournament and was no longer eligible to fight for the World Championship --- I was offered a runner-up prize. A shot at the vacated X Championship, due to Xander winning the tournament and earning the right to fight for the World Championship. Even after being the runner-up to the Road To The Gold tournament, something happened to me. Something happened to me on the night where Xander would fight for the World Championship; I choked. I went against Gjenrei, someone who had no real momentum going into the match... didn't have anything... and I lost. I lost my chance to become a champion, twice.
I was close... so... very... close to gaining the X Championship. Just as I was so very close to winning another title that I had no intent on going for. It's crazy to still think about it like this, but when I was entered into the Road To The Gold tournament; I had no intent on getting as far as I did, and I had no intent on being viewed as a contender for the World Championship at that time. But I did make it that far. I was viewed as a contender.
That doesn't change anything. I had no intent of going after the X Title; but I'm going to take what I can get! It's as simple as that. You want to give me a chance to become the number one contender for the X Championship? I'll make the most of it, and I won't only have this opportunity to become the number one contender --- I WILL become the number one contender!
When I first heard that this was going to be the shot that I was going to have, I was disappointed. Only at first. I'm looking at it from a different perspective...
The competition.
The competition that has driven New Championship Wrestling to not only be the best place to be; but the only place to be... Is everywhere. Is on every tier. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Anybody that is under contract with nCw can beat anyone else under contract with nCw on any given night.
The X Championship has been a starting point for many of our newer talent. People that are newer to nCw than I was --- people that have been veterans to nCw longer than I've been. Rob Diamond is a former X Champion, and he was one of our greatest X-Division Champions, and some would say that he became one of our greatest World Champions! Xander Famularo, the man who eliminated me from Road To The Gold... the first and only man to hold the X Championship on two occasions, and was never actually defeated to lose it for the second time. He vacated the belt and became World Champion. Alex Jones, my friend and mentor, a former three-time X-Division Champion... Some would even argue that this man should be a World Champion. Probably the greatest talent on the roster that has never won the World title. Mike Laszlo, a man that came to nCw after me and will already be fighting for the World Championship for a second time this Sunday! The longest reigning X Champion and Honor Champion, in history!
I just want to let you know...
Your record.
I'm going to break it.
One more go that made me realize that this X Championship may not be a bad place for me to start. My very own opponent; Xavier Williams. I've faced this man two times already in singles competition, and this Sunday will mark our third encounter. A former... World Champion. One of our greatest X-Division Champions. And he's battling --- not for the X Championship --- but for a chance to battle for the X Championship.
There's something about you, Xavier Williams. Something about you that I respect --- admire --- and love about you. I've had this spiel over with Joe Everyman before, as he is another one of my favorites to step into the ring with. But you, Xavier. You're on a whole new level.
I've beaten you.
You've beaten me.
We're tied, bro.
We're going to have the tie-breaker this Sunday. More importantly, before Adam Knite has a chance to step into the ring, before Alex Jones and Dexter Davis. Before Mike Laszlo and Roberto Verona. Before Andrew Jacobsen and The Ace --- WE are going to lift the roof off the arena! I can't wait for Sunday, Xavier. I can't wait.
I lift my arm up and can't keep the smile off my face. My arm trembles --- not with fear. But with excitement.
Do you see that? Just the thought of us getting into that ring is giving me jitters, just like it did the very first time I stepped into that ring with you. The same feeling I got the second time we stepped into the ring with each other.
I lower my arm back down to my side.
The same... exact... feeling that I'm getting just from hearing about our third match with each other. You are one of my favorites, Xavier, one of my absolute favorites in all of nCw! When I think of a dream match that I could have, if I could choose just one person --- you would definitely be one of the first people to come to mind. And you just might be the winner.
The way you move inside of the ring.
The way that you can just explode at the start of the match and bring everything you have, that's already putting me on my toes. That's already putting these people at the edge of their seats. The feeling that everybody gets... knowing... that it's just a matter of time before you step back into that main event, and you fight for the World Championship! You've held it once. You were one of the greatest X-Division Champions throughout nCw history.
Hell...
You practically created the X-Division. With some help from people like Brad Kane; people like Alex Jones; and people like Angel... four men that I have nothing but respect for. Four people that I've tried to get to look in my direction, and tell me that I'm doing their hard work justice.
You tell me, Xavier.
Have I helped the foundation that the four of you laid out for people like me? For people like us?
I hope that I have. But I'm really not bothered by it --- with all the respect and admiration I have for you, there's just a few things that actually do matter to me. One; that I walk out to that ring, against you, and I walk out as the winner. I wallk out as the number one contender for the X Championship! Two; those fans walk out of that arena... not talking about what Mike and Roberto did. Not talking about what Adam and Webb did. And if Zelda --- or whatever her name is --- gives Kelly a lap dance, they don't give a sh*t. I want the fans walking out of the arena talking about ONE match! I want them talking about Xavier Williams... versus... Seth... Evans.
I won't have it any other way.
I was sitting in my car with my cell phone in hand, waiting for a text message to return... It's been a couple of minutes, and there hasn't been any luck with it. I couldn't wait any longer. I press the button on my phone to conserve battery life, and tuck it into my pocket as my hand reaches for the handle, pulling it, and pushing the door open. My eyes laid on a very familiar sight. Where my friend trained. Where my mentor trained. The man that could very well be my opponent after Mind Games, in my own perfect world, it would be that way --- Alex Jones. I walk up to the door of the training facility, and take a deep breath before walking in. Inside, I see Alex Jones at the punching bag and mixing up a few kicks and punches with it before his eyes lock on me. I can't say that he had the same reaction as me. Truth be told, I was nervous. I was nervous because of the one question that I had to ask him. I couldn't hesitate, though, so I walked up to him and extended my hand out to shake his but... oddly enough... he didn't accept the handshake.
Alex Jones:
"What are you doing here?"
I licked my lips, and couldn't help but be confused by his question. Going into Road To The Gold, he was the man that got me there. Now, it seemed like I was no better than a piece of dirt to him.
Seth:
"I just came to see if you needed any help training... or if you wouldn't mind helping me out with a little bit of training."
Alex Jones:
"I don't think that's a very good idea."
This wasn't going according to plan...
Seth:
"Well... sh*t. I've got a pretty big match this Sunday, and---"
Alex Jones:
"I've got one that matters."
I couldn't keep myself from giving a scowl. He saw it instantly, and smirked at me... seeing the old cocky smirk on his face made me believe that he might have been playing.
Seth:
"I could very well be your opponent next month. When... I become the number one contender for the X Championship, and IF you---"
Alex Jones:
"WHEN I beat Dexter Davis, and become the new X Champion. And I don't think it's very likely that you're going to be my opponent at all."
Seth:
"You don't think I can beat Xavier Williams?"
Alex Jones:
"I don't think it's going to matter. Because you're not going to beat me."
Oddly enough, Alex Jones did extend his hand out --- but he opened it up to me, and took a few steps away from me.
Alex Jones:
"Take the pebble from my hand, grasshopper."
He's still taking a couple steps away from me but I could tell by his tone --- something got his panties tied in a knot... I shake my head to him, more disappointed that he was pushing a friend away. At least, I thought that I was his friend. Standing almost ten feet from me now, he tells me one more thing.
Alex Jones:
"And get a new damn trainer."
He turns his back to me, and I just nod my head. Did the competition within nCw really became so violent that friends turned against friends? Only the future holds the answers. I didn't exactly have the time to argue with him to convince him to help me get prepared for my match... Luckily, I still had another to turn to.
{Scene ends.}
Seth:
"How was work?"
She walks closer to me, and she forces a smile of her own. I could see right through it, but I also knew that it wasn't me at fault for her stress... as she got closer, I took a sip of my water before offering it up to her, while wrapping my arm around her waist to bring her closer to me.
