RESPECT? Let's talk about respect for just a moment. Respect in its most literal sense is defined as "to show regard or consideration for". There is no way to buy respect. Only through hard work, effort, and time will respect be gained by any one person. In our business, respect is something that not a lot of people understand. Alot of people think winning championships and headlining cards will gain you respect. These things, while it is a definite plus when it comes to being a professional wrestler, are only pieces to the puzzle. Respect also has many forms. Respecting your opponents, respecting people who have come before you, and respect for yourself.
The scene opens in a local diner in Chicago, the city that in just a few short days will host Metamorphosis. It is mid afternoon, and the diner is not too terribly busy as lunch hour had just passed. There are still a few patrons left in the place, one of which is an older gentleman up at the counter sitting on a bar stool. One of the waitresses is standing on the other side of the counter looking down at the silverware she is rolling and making small talk with the man.
Man: You know Sherri, today is a very special day for me?
Sherri: Oh yeah, darlin? And why is that?
Sherri looks back down at the silverware she is rolling
Man: I haven't seen my grandson in over 12 years. But, as luck would have it, the company he wrestles for has chosen Chicago to host a wrestling match.
Sherri: Oh really? I love wrestling. What's his name? I might know him.
Man: Jason Norton. Have ya heard of him?
Sherri: Oh yes, I have heard a lot about him. You see, my son just loves wrestling, and he and his friends watch wrestling every weekend. That's all they've been talking about for the last couple of weeks. Jason Norton this...Jason Norton that. I can't believe you are his grandpa. I figured you for thirty-five....forty tops.
The two share a quick laugh as its plain to see the man is in his sixties. The man begins to speak.
Man: Yes, well if you have seen him, you will know where he gets his good looks from, not to mention his charm.
Sherri:Hunny, if he is half as charming as you, I've fallen in love already.
Just as Sherri is finished speaking, the bell on the door is heard ringing. The camera pans around to see Jason Norton walking through the door. Jason has a great big smile on his face. He walks over to his granddad and pats him on the back, before taking a seat next to him. He begins to speak
Jason: Hey paps, how are you doing? It's been a long time.
Paps turns around and looks Jason up and down.
Paps: Well, well, well. The young pup has grown up. Last time I seen you was back in the 90's. You had just started that wrestling business. Your mom tells me you have finally hit the big time huh?
Jason: Yes, sir. I wrestle for the NCW now. They are based out of Dallas. I live down there now. I think I am doing very well for myself.
Paps: I'm proud of you, kid. You know, I always knew you would make something of yourself. I didn't think it would be in wrestling, but I should have seen it coming every time I seen you, you'd be glue to that television set watching those wrestlers. But I am damn proud of you...damn proud.
Jason: You know, there is something I've been wanting to tell you for a long time now. I remember back a long time ago, I was maybe seven or eight years old. You were watching me and a friend at moms house. For whatever reason, me and him got into a fight and he pushed me. I just took it. I didn't say a word. After he left, you said something to me that I will never forget. You said, "Jason...If you don't put up a fight next time, you won't get any respect." You know those words have ran through my head almost daily in my 12 years of wrestling?
Paps looks at Jason. He has a little grin on his face
Paps: You know Jay, your remember those words, and you will never fail.
Jason: I'll never forget them. They are what made me. And I have you thank for that. And I want you to know that I'm definetly glad you are coming to see me this Sunday at Metamorphosis. I'm going to be facing my biggest challenge to date. Steve Awesome.
Sherri chimes in with her two cents.
Sherri: I've seen him. I don't know much about wrestling, but he seems too cocky for his own good. He's on that Sunday show... Collision, right? I've never seen you on there before.
Jason gives a quick sigh.
Jason: Cocky? Yes. For his own good? That's another thing. I've never wrestled him before, so we will see what happens. And about that Sunday show. I'll be on it soon enough. Management can't help but notice the strides I have taken in the short time I have been in the NCW. In fact, this Sunday, I'm up for the number one contender for the National Title. It's only a matter of time before I will be headlining pay per views. Speaking of which, I got a conference in 30 minutes. I better get going. Paps it was good to see you. Sherri, you take good care of my paps here. I got his lunch covered, keep the change.
Jason stands up and gives his paps a hug, and then leaves a twenty on the counter. The scene fades to black
The scene opens to a wide shot of a stage with a podium on it. On the front of the podium is a banner that reads N.C.W. The reporters are chatting amonst themselves. People with staff shirts are walking around and hustling and bustling about their jobs. There is an intense feeling in the atmosphere as every second, Metamorphosis draws near. All of the sudden, all the reporters stop as Jason Norton walks through the side door and makes his way to the podium. Flashbulbs are going off as every begins clapping, Jason begins.
Jason: First of all, it's great to be in the great city of Chicago. Everytime I come to this city, I am welcomed very kindly. As you all know, I will be involved in the Number One Contender match for the National title this Sunday at Metamorphosis. Before taking any questions, I just want to say that it is a privelege to be fighting for a chance at the title. I have held many titles in the past, but upon winning the belt, it will be my greatest accolade to date. Now, lets jump into some questions.
After Jason stops, many reporters start throwing out questions, but one question is distinctly heard. "Jason, what makes you so confident that you will win the match at Meta. Don't you think you are counting your chickens before they hatch" Jason makes a quick smirk, before answering the question.
Jason: I will continue to say it, I will never go into a match with any thought of losing. You know, there's been a lot of talk about Antonio Smith from the Steelers making a guarantee to beat the Patriots. Most people think that he shouldn't have made such a statement being as how he is only in his second year and not very well known. Now, while his and his team's efforts came up rather short on Sunday, he was perfectly in the right in making the statement. You see, it all comes down to confidences. Antonio Smith was confident that his team was going to beat the Patriots and end their streak. And that's the exact attitude you need to have when going into a high profile matchup. Now we can't compare Awesome to a whole football team, but I can definetly put myself in Antonio Smith's place. I've been doubt for along time now. And I'm willing to bet I'm not the favorite going into this match. But I am going into this match with one guarantee. I can guarantee that our match be the best match next to the main event. Both Awesome and I will be putting our perfect records on the line, and I confident that Steve Awesome will be gaining the a digit in his loss column, because come Sunday, I am extremely confident that I will be walking out of the United Center as the Number One Contender for the National Championship
The room becomes a buzz again with questions, and as Jason points out a young lady in the front, as she asks him what he thinks of Steve Awesome.
Jason: As a wrestler, he is very experienced. I'm sure he is going to give me a good competition in the ring. I will definetly be hitting the tape this week to find areas of weakness. I've already done a little bit of homework and have a game plan on situations and things I will work on to prepare myself for this match. Now, as a person, I don't know him. I don't know this guy from Adam. From what I have seen of his recent promos, he is pretty cocky. He likes to be a funny man, too. That's all fine and good. The whole Hot Pockets skit put a smile on my face. But that was when I wasn't facing him. This guy really likes to play some mind games with his opponents, and that's something I'm definetly going to prevent from happening. I'm sure he will have a whole routine set up for his promos against me. There's only going to be one problem for him this time. I'm not some dull monotone rambler like Ace is. And I'm also not Double L, a man who has been out of wrestling for 6 years. No, I am Jason Norton. I am the man who will walk down the aisle, step in the ring, and become the #1 contender for the National Championship.
Yet again, the room fills with questions as Jason points to a man in the back of the room. The man asks Jason if he is ready for any kind of cheap tactics Steve might throw his way.
Jason: This isn't my first match against a guy like this. I've wrestled many dirty players who feel the need to use cheap shots to get an edge over their opponents. I was watching when Steve had his first match here against Double L where he faked an injury to distract the ref. Let me put it to you this way. If a guy resorts to this kind of tactic with me, that's just a compliment to my superiority over him in the ring. I respect myself too much to break the rules to win. And I wouldn't put myself in a situation to get caught cheating. I won't shame myself or my family by cheating. But, on the subject...trust me, I'll be ready for whatever Awesome throws at me. Again, I've been in the ring with jokers like this before. And I've overcome tougher tasks than the Steve Awesome.
More questions poor from the reporters as one reporter asks Jason what his main concern in the match will be.
Jason: My main concern. What pose is going to look best for my entrance to the ring.
Jason's comment gets some laughs from the room
Jason: And Steve, I know you are watching this. My ring entrance does need a little work, and after I beat you at Meta, I hope we can still be friends so you can help me choreograph my entrance....
More laughes come from the room as Jason continues.
Jason: See? I have a pretty good sense of humor if I do say so myself. No, but in all seriousness. Behind the underhanded tactics and the mindgames Steve uses, he is a very great competitior. My main concern not getting too worried when the match starts to tip in Awesome's favor. You see, matches tend to do that. I know for sure I'm not going to go in there and dominate him, so when he starts to take control of the match, I'm not going to panic. As long as I can weather the storms, I will come out victorious.
The spotter at side of the room waves his hand and points at his watch letting Jason know his time is almost up.
Jason: Well, it looks like my time is about up. I'm going to end by saying this. Steve, in a little less than a week, we will be facing off in the squared circle in what some people are calling the best match on the card. Hell, this match is going to make Kelly Fox cream her pants. Just a little while ago, I seen my grandpa for the first time in over 12 years. He taught me one of the biggest lessons of my life. You have to fight to earn respect. I already know this lesson. And I'm hoping you know it too. If not, you will be schooled on Sunday. So, spend a little less time on your hair and makeup, and a little more time in the training room. Because in just a few short days, Business....IS ABOUT TO PICK UP!!!!!
With that, Jason walks off the stage. The room is a buzz as the scene fades to black.
What will happen at Metamorphosis when Jason Norton faces off against Steve Awesome. Jason has come to a crossroads in his career. If he defeats Awesome, he becomes the #1 Contender and goes on to fend for the National Title. Lose, and it's back to the drawing boards.
