I was riding high...so high. And then Mike Laszlo sent me crashing down to Earth. One Malicious Intent and I felt my chance at that big moment snatched away...so I'll just have to do something to bull myself onto the show. If I keep winning matches against people I have no right to beat...well, that's one way to go, isn't it? You're damn right it’s a way to go. Not only is it one way to go...
It's my way.
And here I am, three months later, with the man who started my charge towards fulfilling my potential. Our match at Metamorphosis sent me down the road towards success. Steve motherloving Awesome. I could just be a cocky jackass and say I'll dust him, but that's not something you can EVER say with a man like Steve. You can't discount a Hall of Famer, a multiple-time World Champion offhand. There’s nothing you can do to prepare for a man like Steve Awesome but train and work your ass off to be in peak condition.
First, before I get into anything more…let me say that my thoughts and prayers are with Trent Helms, his family, and his loved ones. I wish you a speedy and full recovery. Don’t want to make a joke there, because I can’t. I sincerely do just wish the best for you.
Steve…I don’t know where you’re going or what you’re doing now. You’re the Face of the Franchise. A Night To Remember is your show. You’re undefeated there. And there’s no doubt that you’ll find a spot there. It’d be almost impossible to not be able to find you a place at A Night To Remember, NCW’s biggest show, NCW’s last show…but I can’t help but be selfish and worry about my own spot. Where am I going to be?
I’ll tell you where I want to be. I want to be right up there with men like you, Adam Knite, The Ace…I don’t give a damn about how insignificant some will make me out to be. I haven’t had the success that others have, I know. But every time I step into that ring, people can’t stop watching. I make an impact with every move, I add excitement to the night every moment I’m in there. I electrify the audience with my mere presence.
We’re alike in at least one way that you might not have thought of, Steve. We inspire imitators. There are people out there who want to be like us. They want to be known as the Face of the Franchise, the Master of Gravity. They want to be us because we epitomize excellence in our styles. There are dozens of people who want to be Caleb Lockwood. There are hundreds upon hundreds that want to be Steve Awesome. But there’s only one you. And there’s only one me. Because nobody’s star shines brighter than yours…and nobody can fly as high as I can.
This is the kind of match that makes last week a bit easier to swallow. It shows some faith from management. They think I’ve got the skills to handle myself against Steve Awesome…and they’re right. I’ve beaten him before, and I believe I can beat him again. I will hit harder, I will move faster, I will fly higher than I’ve ever flown before, and I’ll do it all because I need to keep my momentum rolling. Once I get moving, I’m never going to stop.
It takes a lot of work to make this not feel like a bunch of empty blustering. Talking without just spewing hot air…it’s a skill that a lot of people never develop fully. They just repeat the same few points over and over, and I’ve been guilty of that. But that’s one thing that Steve Awesome does very well. He can talk and talk for days, and people will fall over themselves to hear what he has to say. You love him, you hate him, you can’t ever ignore him. He’s just that kind of larger-than-life presence, on the mic, in the ring, anywhere he goes…he’s a superstar.
I’m not Hollywood. I don’t get movie deals, I don’t get that kind of attention. I don’t have TMZ reporting on where I’ve been seen, what I’m wearing. I’m not that important to them. If I got into a car accident, got caught on a security camera drunk and cursing out a gas station attendant? All over the blogosphere. But I’m not that kind of larger-than-life personality. I’m just a wrestler. What I do isn’t interesting to the 140-character press corps. But they’re not who I care about. I care about those fans, and I care about the person I’ve got to deal with across the ring from me. My opponent. My fans. And that shot at championship glory.
That’s all I’ve cared about since Day One. Getting into that ring, wrestling a match against whoever I may be opposed by, and throwing all I’ve got at them. I’m a kamikaze. All-out, pedal to the metal, full throttle. As lnog as I can move, I don’t stop. If I stop, I’m on the mat, and that’s not a good place to be. Steve, I want you to try to keep up with me. It’s not a matter of skill. It’s all about perception. So don’t blink. Don’t even blink. You just might miss something.
It's my way.
