Just piskced it up a few days ago and it hasn't been out of my sterio, it has taken Slipknot's place as my favourite new album. Everything you've heard is true, metallica are back, gone is the over produced southern hard rock of load and reload, and it seems that the nightmare of St Anger being used to excersize James' demons is gone....
Track 1-That was just your life
Thrashy, catchy and a great openning track, starts off with a slow burning intro before erupting into a thrashterpiece. I haven't heard them play anything this fast and hardcore since "...Justice"
Track 2-The end of the line
A great intro and some seriously ass kicking basswork from Robert Trujillo with some slightly slower tempo chug from James and Kirk, then it seems to stop before a bluesy orientated riff that would have been one of the best on the "load" era material
Track 3-Broken beat and scarred
This is very similar to tracks 1 and 2, which is not a bads thing, crunching riffs, a great solo and demanding drum work from lars who lost the tin cans and THANK **** FOR THAT, this is the slowest of the tree openners and one of the most melodic but it's so cathy...it even sounds motley cruish in some parts.....
Track 4-The day that never comes
The first single and along with the unforgiven 3 it's one of the ballady type songs, but when I say ballad I don't mean "mama said" I mean "ONE" cause that along with "Fade to blac" from ride the lightening are what I would compare this song to...a great intro, great singing as well as some awesome exploding riffs at the back end and again Kirk hammets solo work is mesmerising.....
Track 5-All nightmare long
The track that the wwe is gonna use for no mercy, and after one listen you can see why, burn old school thrash..this song wouldn't be out of place on "kill em all", triple picking, double bass work, james' growl and amazing solo.....metallica have never sounded this brutal and strangelly catchy at the same time.....
Track 6-Cyanide
Another hard and catchy track, their "hard rock" track I guess you could say
Track 7-The unforgiven 3
A piano intro to one of the most progressive songs they've ever done..truelly amazing, slow, emotional and dark, metallica outdoing themselves....
Track 8-The judas kiss
The catchyness is amazing, james just lets rip with venom fuelled lyrics, again thrash riffs slam together....
Track 9-Suicide and redemption
Their first instrumental since "To live is to die" from "...and justice for all", and after hearing it I have to ask where the hell have they been?...this song could have been on justice...it's amazing.....
Track 10-My apocalypse
Their sortest song on the album(at 5 minutes), pounding drums lead into some awesome guitar playing and headbangerifiic licks, again james spits the lyrics with venom and anger but still has some emotion and melody.....
Basically this album isn't so much as a step back as it is a step sideways....this is the album metallica should have made after justice....thrashy but still mainstream, in fact this album is like justice with a better producer.....Metallica are back....and god it's good to have them
