I had just finished picking up my apartment when the door bell rang. I felt absolutely elated that Shelly and AJ had agreed to come over for dinner. I thought for once things were going to go just right. We'd sit down, enjoy a nice turkey, perhaps a few drinks, watch a movie, and for the first time ever in my life, things would be "normal."
I'm not exactly sure how many people pay attention to back story, but mine isn't... well... It'd make a pretty good movie or book, but as far as actually living it goes, it hasn't been fun.
Either way they had shown up. I opened the door and greeted my estranged wife with a hug and a peck on the cheek. Jokingly I made the same gesture to AJ, he laughed it off and we shook hands, tightly. The two of them came in and made themselves right at home, complimenting me on how pleasant my new surroundings were.
I had done a rather nice job if I do say so myself. I'd only been set in this place for a week and already the living room and dinning room were set. Hayleigh's bed room wasn't quite ready, and the kitchen was, well a disaster, but hey, I'm a man, and we're not known for our cleanliness. They made their way over to the dinning room table, AJ taking a seat at one end of the table and Shelly sitting next to him.
She looked lovely tonight, in a striking red dress that ended just above her knees, the top was cut just low enough to give you a peak, but covered enough to be considered classy. AJ had on a black, long sleeve button up and faded blue jeans, which in his own way looked rather nice. Myself, well I decided to do something a little different for me. A white long sleeve button up with a pair of tan pants.
I probably looked really strange, change can be a scary thing.
Shelly commented that Hayleigh was spending the evening at her grandmother's, a lovely thought, she had never gotten a chance to stay there over night before. In the back of my mind I was a little bit worried but I know in my heart that she'll be just fine.
The two of them start to ask me about my baby brother, to which I shot them both an evil look which promptly shut them up. Shelly tried to apologize but I shrugged off the notion she had too. Fact was, everyone wanted to know about Nero and I. AJ in his cleverness changed topics quickly, asking me if I had watched "Taken" yet, starring Liam Nielson. I had, it was an amazing film and I recommend we watch it later, the both of them seem pleased with this.
I excuse myself and head to the kitchen, the turkey is all done and I remove it from the oven, bringing it back out into the dinning room and placing it before both Shelly and AJ. They smile and congratulate me on not burning it. I return their cordial smile and tell them to dig in. The stuffing and mashed potatoes had already been there awaiting their turkey counter part.
Dinner was delicious, they tell me so, and again I feel so delighted that we had done this. I can't believe how smoothly this night has gone. AJ and Shelly have both had a bit much to drink, slurring their speech and getting a little too flirty. At one point they sneak a kiss and I have to leave the table.
In the bathroom I find myself starring into the mirror, an empty bottle of pills in my hands, I look from side to side then at the reflection of the man looking back at me.
It's Nero.
He smiles at me and shifts his gaze to the door, which has now opened.
I'm standing in the hall way looking out at Shelly and AJ, they didn't hear me, their making out. Shelly appears to be sexually aroused, like she would mount him if it weren't for me being near by.
Now I'm standing just behind AJ, I look down, I'm holding a beer bottle. Shelly pulls away from AJ as I smash the bottle over his head. She goes to scream but my hand is around her throat before she knows what to do.
AJ is still unconscious, I've taped him to the chair with duct tape. Shelly, I choked her until she passed out, seating her back in the chair next to AJ. I have the bottle of wine now and I'm dumping it all over the dinning room table and the floor. I look over at the window, again I see the reflection of Nero starring back at me.
I strike a match and drop it.
The apartment is a blaze.
AJ and Shelly are burning. They wake up, their screaming for me to help them. Their screaming for me to turn around as I walk out the front door, locking it, and breaking the key off in the cylinder.
Their screams haunt me as I head to the elevator, as the doors close, as Nero appears next to me now, hugging me, telling me I did a good job.
Father is there, he pats me on the head and tells me he loves me.
Xanetia, our dear lost sister is there too, and she too smiles and tells me how I've grown.
We're together suddenly, all of us, Alex, Damien, Xanetia, Nero, Faith, Mother, Father, me, we're all together inside this burning building, inside this elevator as the screams of the people floors above us rain down like so many drops in a morning shower.
"ANGEL!!!!!!"
Philip Burns is there before me, shaking me, his eyes wild as he screams my name in my face.
"ANGEL!!!!"
"What?!"
"Dude, snap the **** out of it, whats the matter with you?"
"What do you mean?"
"You tried to burn the damn hotel down."
What? I look behind Burns, the curtains over the window are scorched and soaking wet, in my right hand is a lighter.
"Are you alright man?"
"I... I'll be fine."
"Sure?"
"Yeah... yeah I think so."
"Alright. Get ready to go we gotta meet with Chad Lights in about twenty minutes."
"Sure thing."
What the hell is happening to me?

"Oh, there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees.
I got bills to pay,
I got mouths to feed,
There ain't nothing in this world for free.
I know I can't slow down,
I can't hold back,
Though you know, I wish I could.
No there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good."
