“I’m home. Home is a dilapidated two story house in West Hartford, C. It was a happy home brother. At first. See my sister and I, we’re two years apart. When I was five and she was three we were normal children. But then, father started his training. Do you know what it was brother?. He’d take me, to where you lived, and he’d show me, and say that you were who I had to be. He said that if I couldn’t be you, then I was just a waste. He said that all I was, was a lump of meat that he’s use to feed the dogs, cause they’d be more use to him than me.”
Nero sits on the floor of the dilapidated house. The windows are either boarded up or broken. There’s holes in the floorboards. Water damage, holes in the plasterboard walls. And in the center of the room is Nero. He holds what seems to be a beaten up teddy bear with one of the eye’s falling out.
“He trained me, conditioned my mind. Made me hate you as much as he hated your mother. She destroyed “his work” she stopped him from realising his dream. He hated her because of that, but father never could hate you. His perfect warrior, not even our other brothers could measure up. Damian and Alex.......he told me that they were failures. He told me that you were the only one who could be great. I never got to meet our other siblings Angel. All I have is you and Faith, named after Alex. Faith is also your sister Angel. You have a family. And you may think I’m here to destroy you. But I’m not...I’m here to set you free..because I love you my brother....”
“You’ve hidden who you really are from everyone. And most people have bought it, but not me. You can’t hide your true nature from me, because I’m your family. Shelly and Hayleigh aren’t, they’re just distractions. I’m your blood. You can feel it though can’t you?. You know where you belong. In that back part of your kind you can feel it growing. You can feel the truth surging forward. It’s pushing you brother, changing you back to who you are. I’ve seen it in your eyes. You can’t take it anymore can you?. The thoughts, the memories. Realising that a man you HATE, and Angel, I know you hate AJ Phoenix, is in all probability replacing you as a husband and father.”
“Why should you take that Angel?. Because it’s the “right” thing to do?. The right thing for you to do is to take your wife back.”
Nero laughs and sets the bear down. He gets to his feet and walks along the creaking floor boards into another room, the kitchen. The taps leak a brown coloured substance that may or may not be water, the tiles on the bench are all gone leaving the concrete setting.
“I remember being five years old. I can still smell the air in the basement. Father called me down there, I thought he was going to show me the woodworking project he had started the week before. But he had a ritual set up, I sat down in the middle of a dawn circle, he told me the stories of how the evil in the world had made humanity weak. And how our family would rise about it all. He told me you were supposed to be the one, but now you had the power inside you, but no wish to use it.”
“He told me that I was to receive the same power and use it to destroy you. But then over time his heart softened. He missed his true family and the mission changed. The mission was now to make you release that power. It’s a power you showed a glimpse of this week when you beat me down. I was laughing on the inside brother, I was smiling. Because I was happy. You had shown your true dark soul......”
“Father was happy to. Seeing his true son return. You belong with us, you belong with your family. Your idle threats can’t mask your feelings. You know it’s true. So threaten me with violence all you want, because deep down you know I’m right and you can’t intimidate me.”
Nero’s hand runs up the counter, he smiles almost warmly looking at the tattered curtains near the window, he looks out into the backyard now overcome with weeds.
“Bring all the pain you want, release the monster because all you’ll be doing is proving me right. So come brother...come...play...dying....”
Nero turns and smiles at the camera before laughing as we fade out on the backyard
