The scene looks shaky. Sort of reminds you of old movie footage. The scene looks like a birthday party, a first birthday party to be more exact. A good amount of people are there, sitting around a table with a big Teletubbies cake in the center, A big “One” shaped candle stuck smack dab in the middle of it, and on the top written in pink frosting was “Happy First Birthday Hope.”
The cute little baby Hope sat in her high chair with her whole family sitting around her. Her grandparents, her mother Jackie and her father, and even a fresh faced, flat stomached, blonde haired kid with the name Steve. They all watched the cute little thing as she giggled and reached towards her cake with the intent of mashing it between her baby fingers.
“Oh no, squirt.”
Steve says, sliding the cake away from Hopes grasp.
“Not until we sing your birthday song.”
“Be out there in a minute Steve. Just reading to see if the fire from the candle will hurt Hope’s eyes or not.”
Jackie yelled from the kitchen, Steve shoots her husband a glance and he just chuckles and rolls his eyes.
“So Steve, how’s the wrestling business going? You get that call back from that one place yet?”
Steve shrugs.
“No, not yet.”
“Don’t worry dude, they’ll call you. I herd that guy Mongo thought you were cute.”
Steve looks at the man that married his sister and just waves him off.
“Anyway…it’s good they haven’t called me yet. Then I might have missed Hope’s birthday party. What kind of uncle would I be if I missed my nieces birthday?”
Jackies husband pats Steve on the shoulder as Jackie comes out from the kitchen to light the candle.

More footage. Same style, probably from the same camera. But this time the scene isn’t so happy. The weather is gloomy and there’s a group of people standing around a headstone. It was Jackie’s husband’s funeral. Jackie was crying in her moms arms and her dad was trying to console her as well. The camera drifts away and we find Hope, now a bit older, sitting away from everything, crying to herself. The camera walks over to her and she looks up.
“Uncle Steve…why are you camcording this?”
“Well, even some bad memories deserve to be remembered.”
Steve’s voice came from behind the camera. More tears came from Hopes eyes as she shook her head.
“I don’t wanna member this. I just want my daddy.”
Awesome sets the camera down on the table Hope was sitting at and he drops to one knee in front of her. You can see that Steve looked more tone, a pair of sunglasses on the top of his sandy blonde hair. She wraps her arms around him and hugs him.
“Hope, I know your sad. You miss your dad….we all do. This is hard for all of us.”
Hope pulls her head back and looks up at her uncle.
“If your sad…why aren’t you crying?”
“Because I try to think of all the happy times I had with your dad. Like that time we all went camping. Or that time we went to Disney World.”
“Or like when he tucks me in really tight or the time he played Barbies with me outside.”
“Exactly. It may be hard for us all to get used to it, but as long as you remember the good times…he’ll always be with you.”
A smile almost forms on Hopes lips but….it gives way again.
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s just….whose going to take care of me and mommy now?”
Hope looked up at Steve again. Tears starting to form in her eyes again. It broke Steve’s heart to see her so upset.
“I will.”
Steve said, in a voice that never sounded more determined.
“Whatever you guys need….I’m there for you. Don’t even think about hesitating to ask. I‘ll make sure your always loved and happy and no monsters will ever get you or your mommy.”
Hope wipes a tear from her cheek.
“Promise?”
Steve makes an X across his chest.
“Cross my heart and hope to die.”

More and more footage is shown on the television screen. Each one more worse than the last. Steve would show up to events and birthdays with different females, completely ignoring everyone else around him. If it didn’t pertain to him he wasn’t interested. More and more holidays would come and Steve would go less and less…until….he just stopped showing up completely. The footage seems to finally end. The screen it was being played on goes blank and we now see Steve Awesome, staring into a dark television screen in an even darker room. He stays quiet for a few moments, the only thing you can really hear is the guilt rising in his gut.
The handi-cam starts to roll and we find Steve Awesome staring back at us. The National Title over his shoulder. His eyes red, puffy, either because he had been crying or because Harold had been punching him throughout the week. Whatever the reason, he didn’t look to upset at this point in time. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure what Steve was feeling right now. Such a pallet of emotions the National Champ is, anger, sadness, fear, regret….lets just say that at this time…Steve was just an emotional train wreck.
“You don’t have to tell me Harold, because I already know. I mean…HELLO….I was there the whole time. I was watching through my own two eyes as I embraced a life of smut and darkness and shied away from a family that loved me. I was sitting center row as I watched myself sleep with countless women even when I had a good girl at home…waiting for me…loving me……being there for me. That girl gave up her dream to be a journalist to come on the road with me and look pretty. All her hard work she put in during school and she through it all away to be with me and I spit in her face. I was there when I took out the man who gave me my break in this company Trent Helms….and he was never the same after that! I’m not trying to brag….I regret all my actions. Every last one of them, from Trent, to Angel, to Price, to Honcho, and yeah Knite, even The Ace. I’m truthfully sorry for how I acted. I don’t know how many times I can say that….
..but yet there’s always somebody who wants to come around and be the next guy to shove it in my face like I crapped on his lawn….
“How long am I supposed to be punished? How long until you see that I’ve been trying to start fresh for damn near four months, but every time I do there just seems to be a new guy that wants to swoop in and show me the error of my ways.
Well I admit it…..
I suck as a person.
Okay?
Is that what you want to hear from me Harold?
I had everything I could ever want in this whole entire world, love, compassion, family, a great life, and I took it all for granted. I’m sitting over here ripping it all too shreds when guys like you are sitting in your Fridge box wishing you had maybe even one of those things. Well you know what Harold?”
“Have them.”
He pulls the National Title from his shoulder and tosses it toward the camera and it falls to the floor.
“I respect the National Championship and all those that have held it…..but I don’t really need it. The fame and the respect doesn’t drive me anymore.”
“My looks….”
He reaches up and starts pulling out more hair. Wincing in pain as he pulls out more and more chunks. He wiggles his fingers in front of the lens and lets brown strands of hair float to the floor.
“…..my hair…you already have most of it….”
He starts slapping and punching himself in the face. So much so that his right eye actually starts to swell up more.
“….I don’t care. You want me to be ugly? Fine….I’m not driven by cheap one nighters and slutty girls anymore……
He walks up closer to the camera….he breathes heavy…his teeth clenching together.
“..but you CANNOT take my family away from me Harold…..”
You can start to hear his voice crack. The proverbial lump in his throat is moving up and down.
“…I WON’T LET YOU…”
His eyes start to well up…he can’t fight it anymore. He’s just so angry…so worked up.
“…because I love’em. I love Jackie and I love Hope. And just like I promised her all those years ago Harold, I’d be there for her no matter what. I’m going to be there Harold….even I can’t beat you…even if you walk into Reborn and take my life from me….I’m going to be there to fight the six foot six, three hundred and forty five pound, unstoppable, ultra violent force, hell bent ending my career.
Because that’s how much I love them.
Steve shrugs.
“I’d do anything for them. I never said dying wasn’t one of them…..”
Static.
