……Ring……
…Ring……………….
……………Ring…..
“Hey this is Layla. You know what to do.”
Beep.
“Hey…..it’s me. I know I’m probably the last person you’d ever wanna talk to…but….I just want to know if your alright. I’ve been trying to get a hold of you for a good six hours, I’m just afraid something bad has happened to you. If it did…..I’m sorry….”
Click.
“That sick demented bastard.”
I hung up the phone and just let it drop down to the wood paneling of the balcony I was sitting on. The sun was shining bright today and for the first time you could really see the extent of Steve Awesome’s physical changes. The short mop of hair that mocked Eric Foreman from That 70’s Show. Tattered layers flap as the wind blows through it. Dark round bags under his eyes, cuts and bruises all over his once handsome face. If you didn’t witness all the heinous acts of violence committed by Harold with your own eyes you would call me crazy if I tried to present this man to you as Steve Awesome. He didn’t even really give you the same vibe you’d usually get from Steve. The charismatic, devil may care, face of the franchise wasn’t sitting in that lawn chair. No….Steve seemed different. Like this imminent feeling was weighing him down. Harold had done everything he said he would do to Steve Awesome. All that was left was to light the candle on the cake.
He stood up from the chair and went inside through the sliding glass doors. Inside was an empty house and his sister Jackie sitting at the computer, probably searching through dozens of governmental and legal sites with custody laws or any other way she could get Hope back through a court room. She turns back and notices her brother standing by the glass doors, staring at her.
“Hey….I think I might have found something that we could use and-”
“I’m sorry.”
It took Jackie a couple seconds to realize she was interrupted.
“Sorry for what?”
Steve just shrugs. The answer was just so vast he didn’t know where to start.
“For everything. For letting you down.”
Jackie shakes her head.
“You haven’t let me down Steve….we still have a chance at this.”
Steve nods. But the nod is so weak you can see right through it.
“Yeah…sure sis. But I’m just saying….if something happens to me at Reborn….I’m sorry for everything. When everything started I never intended to hurt anyone….but I fell into a bad path…I spiraled out of control….My actions tore this whole company into two separate entities…..and now at Reborn….Karma is going to catch up with me Jackie.”
Jackie pops up from the computer chair and walks to her brother’s side. She puts her hand on his shoulder and looks into his eyes but he can’t return the gaze and looks away.
“Don’t talk that way Steve. I’ve seen you overcome even tougher obstacles then Harold. You’ll beat Harold Sunday night….you’ll see.”
A small grin appears on his lips. One that was more for finding the humor in his sister’s naivety.
“You can’t stop fate Jackie. You just can’t. No matter how hard you try, it’s just going to keep coming after you.”
Jackie’s is a bit taken aback by this.
“So what? Your just going to give up?”
Awesome turns away from her.
“You don’t get it do you Jackie. No….I’m not giving up. I’m going to fight Harold with everything that I have left because I owe that and so much more to you and Hope. But even if I win…even if I somehow magically pull off the big win and beat Harold and retain the belt. It’s not going to end. It won’t change. He’s just going to keep coming for me. My death creeping slowly towards me.”
Steve’s face looks deeply saddened. As if he’s starting to see things the way there supposed to be…how Harold explained them. Jackie takes a few steps back.
“Steve…your starting to scare me.”
“And it’s what I deserve. I brought all this on myself. This is my fault this had to happen this way. You can’t stop fate Jackie, just like you can’t stop death. Maybe I’ll beat him….but I’m not holding my breath. Every story has an ending sis…..I’m just sorry ours had to be a bad one.”
Awesome lowers his head and walks passed her, grabbing his coat from the hook and grabbing the doorknob with his free hand.
“What about all that “There’s always a glimmer” bullcrap your always shoving down people’s throats? Huh? Whatever happened to that?”
Steve doesn’t even look up at her.
“Let’s just say the light isn’t shining that bright anymore…..”
The door closes.
“I hate you Harold….”
Steve’s face. Standing in front of the camera.
“I hate you with every ounce of my soul.
“I hate what you are…
“What you do.”
“What you say……
“I hate everything about you. From those worked in boots all the way up to the mask with my own hair attached to it. I wish you would be hit by a bus with me as a driver. That’s why I hate it so much that I have to admit that your right.”
“Your right Harold…..after everything that I’ve done. After everything I put my friends, my family, nCw and it’s fans through…..I don’t deserve what I have. And to think that I could just say I’ve changed and hope people would accept it…..they know better. I don’t deserve to be here. I don’t deserve any of this.”
“So take me out Harold.”
“Take me out and end my suffering.”
“I’m begging you Harold….please….
“….just end this….”
“Or I will.”
The face of Awesome turns around and all you can see is the back of his head.
“Sorry I let you down as well. I guess a promise was just too much to ask for. The road I walked had to be paved in gold….and now it comes crashing down on me…..”
Awesome walks away and out of the shot as the camera reveals who he was talking too. A single gravestone with the words “Here lies Kevin Finch. Loving Husband and Father.”
The end?
