Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception.
Psalm 12:2
{St. Maynards Church. Montana. Karras stands ready to deliver another sermon.}
Karras: Lies. They are everywhere. The average person will tell three lies in every ten minutes of conversation. Some people lie far more often than that. Some people craft a story to make their life worthwhile, and then are forced to retell it for years ahead. Sometimes with the same details, sometimes with slightly different details, but the story is, was, and always will be nothing more than a lie..
His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
Proverbs 26:26
Karras: Many people would tell you that what I do here isn't worth the time it takes. Many people would tell you that every word I say is tainted with a message of power and control. All of those people, look at the way their life has gone, and when they can't find someone to literally blame. They point the finger skyward. Everyone out there, has the unrealistic ideal that God should just hand them everything they want. And when he doesn't, simply because they do not need nor deserve it, they get angry. They akin it to believing in Santa Claus. It was all well and good while it lasted, but now that we know better... right? God does not work that way my friends. Look around.
Of what value is an idol, since a man has carved it? Or an image that teaches lies? For he who makes it trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak.
Habakkuk 2:18
Karras: Men create many things. Things used to inspire, as well as things used to destroy. People look to certain things as evil, because they never take the time to see the real meaning behind it. Especially music. Bands like Slayer, Tool and Marilyn Manson are always demonified as if they murder, rape and pillage. All these men do, is create music. Sure, there are feelings of anger, bitterness and repression, but what is a man if not a creature of emotion? People look to these things literally, and they know not how wrong they are.
Amen
Thank you for coming.
{The crowd disperses. Sister Desiree stands up from her seat on the side of the stage and walks across the floor, holding a cd in a paper sleeve in her hand. She extends it out to him wordlessly, but her face is a mask of hate and disdain.}
Karras: And that is?
Desiree: That garbage Daredevil put out.
Karras: I've already seen it.
Desiree: Oh, good then..
{She throws it across the room, watching with some satisfaction as the sleeve comes off and the disc slides across the floor to be scratched and unplayable, the sheer stupidity of the message on it lost forever.}
Desiree: Shall I burn it as well?
Karras: No..
{Karras started to head for the rectory, Desiree following close behind.}
Desiree: Why not? What if one of our congregation saw it?
Karras: The man may be an idiot, but he was given a mind of his own by God, and I can't stop him from using it. They're just words from a vile, bitter man who didn't get what he wanted for christmas and now blames God for it.
Desiree: All the more reason he should see what little importance his words carry.
Karras: He knows his words carry no importance. That's why he used the song to say what he wanted. It's not his fault he does not realize the falacy of his words, or the deeper meaning of the song.
Desiree: And that is?
Karras: That the song is a message to the unholy about never reaching paradise because they are.. well.. unholy. People who use the faith of others to control and manipulate them. It's about those fake priests who preach God's word and when no-one is looking Sin for days and pretend like it never happened. I'm sorry, but that's not me.
Desiree: So, his whole big point just blew up in his face?
Karras: Mostly, but he'll never see it. Likely he'll say what the media says and scream that the song is totally literal and Slayer is against God and I don't know what I'm talking about. Typical stuff, really.
Desiree: What about his threats?
Karras: What? You mean the whole I'm crazy and that means I'm going to practically kill you in the ring?
Desiree: Something to that effect.
Karras: His whole death defying garbage is simply a way of masking the fact that he feels inadequate. He wants to come off as fearless and powerful, when in fact he's nothing more than a fightened man, living in a fightening world. Difference is, I have God watching over me. He likes to think he's a force of evil, but just remember as I've always said dear Sister. Satan has no power on the realm of earth.
{Karras turns to the camera.}
Karras: You see, Mr. Devil. Even if I would slip out of focus for the moment and allow you to assert yourself as Satan, I would then have to point out that making a claim like that only makes you look stupid. You tell me my faith is bull****, and then assert yourself as the biggest enemy of it. Nothing more than hypocrisy. You are exactly like the very people you hate. These gay priests you're so certain everyone is. I am a priest, bringing God's word to you is more important than anything. So it doesn't matter what she looks like, because I'm not concerned with that.. or you.. or anyone. at all.
Amen
God has mercy. I don't. Remember that.
{Karras walks through the rectory door. Leaving Desiree there with the camera.}
Desiree: Pfft. Enjoy your slut Daredevil. If you're lucky, little jimmy might still work for you after Wired is done. After God puts the fear of him back in your cowardly ass. Or, I might just do it for him. Put your hands on me..
You will regret it..
Yours is a vengeful God...
{Fade.}
